INTRODUCTION: The authors present the results of nine patients (two females, seven males) who had bone tumors that were treated with en bloc resection and distraction osteogenesis between 1991-2000.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The average age of the patients was 19.3 years (14-42 years). The histological diagnosis was osteosarcoma in four cases, Ewing's sarcoma in two, giant cell tumor in one, osteofibrous dysplasia in one and osteoblastoma in one. A uniplanar external fixator was applied to one case and circular external fixator to the other eight cases.

One hundred forty-three patients who received radiation therapy for childhood tumors, and survived to the age of skeletal maturity, were studied by retrospective review of oncology records and roentgenograms. Autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) has been increasingly used in the treatment of malignant diseases. Since myelosuppression is one of the major dose limiting factors in cancer chemotherapy, ABMT is effective for hematologic reconstitution after marrow-lethal intensive therapy, which increases the anti-tumor effect. Soft tissue sarcomas harboring EWSR1::PATZ1 are a recently recognized entity with variable morphology and a heterogeneous immunohistochemical profile. We studied 17 such tumors. We determined the incidence of venocclusive disease of the liver (VOD) in 96 recipients of autologous bone marrow transplants (BMT) to be 9.4%, a figure less than that reported for allogeneic transplantation.
