Acute unilateral vestibulopathy/vestibular neuritis: Diagnostic criteria.

This paper describes the diagnostic criteria for Acute Unilateral Vestibulopathy (AUVP), a synonym for vestibular neuritis, as defined by the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society. AUVP manifests as an acute vestibular syndrome due to an acute unilateral loss of peripheral vestibular function without evidence for acute central or acute audiological symptoms or signs. This implies that the diagnosis of AUVP is based on the patient history, bedside examination, and, if necessary, laboratory evaluation. The leading symptom is an acute or rarely subacute on

Targeting the melanocytes of the inner ear: A comparison of different CreER lines.

The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance. During development, the inner ear undergoes extensive morphogenesis to create a coil shaped cochlea and three semicircular canals from an original flat otic placode. During this morphogenesis, neural crest cells migrate into the inner ear in formation to become either glial cells or melanocytes. The glial cells are located in the cochleo-vestibular ganglion and the melanocytes reside in the stria vascularis in the cochlea and dark cells zone in the vestibule. The stria vascularis pumps potassium ions into the scala media, generating a posit…

A New Titanosaurian Braincase from the Cretaceous "Lo Hueco" Locality in Spain Sheds Light on Neuroanatomical Evolution within Titanosauria.

Despite continuous improvements, our knowledge of the neurocranial anatomy of sauropod dinosaurs as a whole is still poor, which is especial … arctosaurus. The vestibular system of the inner ear is somewhat contracted (i.e., the radius of the semicircular canals is small), but less so than expected in derived titanosaurians. However, as far as the new specimen and Jainosaurus can be contrasted, and with the necessary caution due to the small sample of comparative data currently available, the two taxa appea …

Effects of vestibular prosthesis electrode implantation and stimulation on hearing in rhesus monkeys.

To investigate the effects of vestibular prosthesis electrode implantation and activation on hearing in rhesus monkeys, we measured auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in four rhesus monkeys before and after unilateral implantation of vestibular prosthesis electrodes in each of 3 left semicircular canals (SCC). Each of the 3 left SCCs were implanted with electrodes via a transmastoid approach. Right ears, which served as controls, were not surgically manipulated. Hearing tests were conducted before implantation (BI) and then 4 weeks post-impl…

Vestibular function analysis in patients with unilateral Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Ménière's disease (MD) is characterized by episodic vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. As vertigo is a cardinal symptom, evaluating vestibular function is essential for disease assessment. However, the relationship between vestibular function and the degree or location of endolymphatic hydrops (EH), as well as the stages of Ménière's disease (MD), remains unclear. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with definite Unilateral Ménière's disease (UMD) underwent a comprehensive vestibular function evaluation, including cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic

Inferior mastoidectomy-hypotympanic approach for surgical removal of glomus jugulare tumors: an anatomical and radiologic study emphasizing distances between critical structures.

The technique of inferior mastoidectomy-hypotympanic dissection, with preservation of the middle and inner ear structures, has been established for radical surgical removal of glomus tumors involving the skull base. In order to study the gross anatomic differences and correlate with the computed tomography (CT) scan, 20 human temporal bones were dissected and accurate measurements between vital structures were made. This study revealed a wide variation in distances between the neurovascular structures, whereas the distances between inner ear structures were not statistically different. This or

Visualization of horizontal canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo using 3DCT imaging and its assessment.

BACKGROUND: There have been no useful imaging methods to diagnose benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common cause of vertigo, depending on the characteristic symptom. OBJECTIVE: To visualize horizontal canal (HC) BPPV using 3DCT and assess its clinical usefulness. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten BPPV patients were diagnosed with distinct BPPV, canalolithiasis, and cupulolithiasis of the HC (hc-BPPV, hc-BPPV-cu), which were definitely diagnosed on the basis of criteria of BPPV by the Barany Society and 10 healthy subjects without a history of dizziness were investigated using 3DCT with

Multiple positional nystagmus suggests multiple canal involvement in benign paroxysmal vertigo.

CONCLUSION: Video-oculography demonstrates a higher occurrence of atypical positional nystagmus in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This includes anterior and horizontal canal variants and multiple positional nystagmus, suggesting combined lesions affecting several canals. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the video-oculographic findings of positional tests in patients with BPPV. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy individuals with symptoms of BPPV and positional nystagmus were included in this study. The diagnosis was based on a history of brief episodes of vertigo and the presence

Canalith repositioning for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a randomized, controlled trial.

We assessed the efficacy of the canalith repositioning maneuver by comparing it with no treatment in a population of patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). In this randomized, controlled, 6-month efficacy trial, outcomes were measured subjectively by patients' reports of symptom status and objectively by Hallpike testing. During the first month of the study, the treated group experienced significantly better outcomes than did the control group, but this trend was not sustained at 3 and 6 months.

[Sudden vertigo--differential diagnosis and therapy in peripheral vestibular (inner ear-induced) forms].

The most important forms of inner ear disorders manifesting as sudden vertigo may be distinguished by the duration of the vertiginous spells: sudden vertigo, diminishing during days = acute peripheral vestibulopathy, recurrent spells lasting for hours = Ménière's disease, recurrent vertigo lasting for minutes = "vascular', recurrent positioning-induced vertigo lasting for seconds = benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV). In the last years, major progress was made in the treatment of BPPV. Based on new ideas on the underlying pathomechanism, this most common form of vestibular vertigo now

Whole-body autoradiography of [3H]dihydrostreptomycin in guinea pigs and rats: the labelling of the inner ear in relation to other tissues.

[3H]Dihydrostreptomycin was given intramuscularly to young pigmented guinea pigs and rats. Whole-body autoradiography, combined with densitometric measurement of the blackening of the autoradiograms, and liquid scintillation counting were used to determine the levels of radioactivity in the inner ear in relation to blood and other tissues. It was found that there was an accumulation of radioactivity in the perilymph of both the cochlear and vestibular parts of the labyrinth. The labelling of the endolymph was weak. The levels of radioactivity in the membranous linings of the labyrinth includin
