Lexical stress in childhood apraxia of speech: acoustic and kinematic findings.

Purpose: This study investigated the acoustic and articulatory movement parameters underlying lexical stress production in children with apraxia of speech (CAS), children with articulation/phonological delay (i.e. speech delay, SD), and children with typical speech-language development (TD). We examined whether there were group differences in these instrumental measures of stress production.Method: Participants were 24 children (seven CAS, eight SD, nine TD) between three and seven years of age. Acoustic and kinematic measures, including acoustic duration, peak and average fundamental frequenc

Sound Distortion Errors in Aphasia With Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose Loosely defined diagnostic criteria for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) limit clinicians' ability to diagnose the disorder validly and reliably. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of more precise diagnostic guidelines by characterizing the frequency and quality of sound distortion errors in speakers with clinically diagnosed AOS. Method Audio-recorded motor speech evaluations from 24 speakers with AOS and aphasia were analyzed by trained listeners using a narrow phonetic transcription protocol that included 12 distortion categories. We calculated percentage

Speech Fluency in Acquired Apraxia of Speech During Narrative Discourse: Group Comparisons and Dual-Task Effects.

Purpose Slowed speech and interruptions to the flow of connected speech are common in aphasia. These features are also observed during dual-task performance for neurotypical adults. The purposes of this study were to determine (a) whether indices of fluency related to cognitive-linguistic versus motor processing would differ between speakers with aphasia plus apraxia of speech (AOS) and speakers with aphasia only and (b) whether cognitive load reduces fluency in speakers with aphasia with and without AOS. Method Fourteen speakers with aphasia (7 with AOS) and 7 neurotypical controls retold sho

Feasibility of Automatic Speech Recognition for Providing Feedback During Tablet-Based Treatment for Apraxia of Speech Plus Aphasia.

Purpose Individuals with neurogenic speech disorders require ongoing therapeutic support to achieve functional communication goals. Alternative methods for service delivery, such as tablet-based speech therapy applications, may help bridge the gap and bring therapeutic interventions to the patient in an engaging way. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an iPad-based speech therapy app that uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) software to provide feedback on speech accuracy to determine the ASR's accuracy against human judgment and whether participants' speech improved with this ASR-ba

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Apraxia of Speech and Cortical Activation in Patients With Stroke: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study.

Purpose The study aims to investigate, using anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (A-tDCS), over which site, the left lip region of primary motor cortex (M1) or the Broca's area, there would be better recovery from apraxia of speech (AoS) in patients with poststroke aphasia and to examine for altered activation in speech-related areas after tDCS with nonlinear electroencephalography (EEG). Method Fifty-two patients with AoS were randomized into A-tDCS over the left M1 (A-tDCS-M1), Broca's area, and sham tDCS groups who underwent 10 sessions of tDCS and speech treatment for 5 days. Th

Testing hypotheses about the underlying deficit of apraxia of speech through computational neural modelling with the DIVA model.

Purpose: A recent behavioural experiment featuring a noise masking paradigm suggests that Apraxia of Speech (AOS) reflects a disruption of feedforward control, whereas feedback control is spared and plays a more prominent role in achieving and maintaining segmental contrasts. The present study set out to validate the interpretation of AOS as a possible feedforward impairment using computational neural modelling with the DIVA (Directions Into Velocities of Articulators) model.Method: In a series of computational simulations with the DIVA model featuring a noise-masking paradigm mimicking the be

Including Nonlinguistic Processing Tasks in the Identification of Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose Accurate identification of developmental language disorder (DLD) remains challenging, particularly for children who speak different dialects, languages, or more than 1 language. Children with DLD, on average, have shown subtle deficits on nonlinguistic cognitive processing tasks, and performance on such tasks may be minimally influenced by language experience. This study explores whether nonlinguistic cognitive processing tasks can contribute to the identification of DLD in children from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Method Study 1 combined data from 4 U.S.-based investigations to yi

Effects of Submental Surface Electrical Stimulation on Swallowing Kinematics in Healthy Adults: An Error-Based Learning Paradigm.

PURPOSE: Hyoid bone and laryngeal approximation aid airway protection (laryngeal vestibule closure) while moving toward their peak superior and anterior positions during swallowing. Submental surface electrical stimulation (SES) is a therapeutic technique that targets the muscles that move the hyoid bone during swallowing. It is unknown whether submental SES only increases peak hyoid bone swallowing positions but not peak laryngeal swallowing positions, which could require faster or greater laryngeal movement to achieve adequate laryngeal vestibule closure. METHOD: We examined the effects of
