FDG-PET and CT characterization of adrenal lesions in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) may differentiate benign from malignant adrenal lesions. In this study, standardized uptake values (SUVs), visual interpretation, and computed tomography (CT) data were correlated with the final diagnosis to determine the contribution of adrenal FDG-PET in patients with known non-adrenal cancer. METHODS: Ninety-two patients with adrenal lesions on CT underwent FDG-PET. Eighty adrenals in 74 patients met the inclusion criteria (PET scan within 4 weeks of CT plus >1 year of follow-up after PET scan with repeat CT or

Cyclin D3 in the mouse uterus is associated with the decidualization process during early pregnancy.

In the mouse, the attachment reaction between the blastocyst trophectoderm and the receptive uterine luminal epithelium occurs at 2200-2300 h on day 4 of pregnancy and is rapidly followed by transformation of stromal cells into decidual cells (decidual cell reaction). This process can also be induced experimentally (deciduoma) by intraluminal oil infusion in the uterus on day 4 of pseudopregnancy. The decidual cell reaction is associated with up- and down-regulation of many genes in a cell-specific manner. Using mRNA differential display, we identified cyclin D3 as one of the genes that is upr

Long-term radiographic outcomes of a central hook-rod construct for osteotomy closure: minimum 5-year follow-up.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate long-term effectiveness of central hook-rod constructs for posterior spinal osteotomy closure. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: During osteotomy site closure various techniques are used, including patient positioning, rod cantilevering, extending fixation points, and compressing through pedicle fixation points. All add premature stress on fixation points and may lead to loosening/eventual fixation failure. To avoid this, we often use a central compression hook-rod construct for osteotomy closure. METHODS: Fifty-six consecutive patients wi

Accuracy and cost comparison of 3D-printed guides in complex spinal deformity correction: direct vs indirect design.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of complex spinal deformities poses significant challenges, as the placement of pedicle screws and the execution of osteotomies within deformed vertebral structures carry an elevated risk of neurological complications. Numerous techniques have been developed to enhance the safety and accuracy of pedicle screw placement and osteotomies. Among these techniques, patient-specific guides, which feature pre-defined and pre-validated trajectories, present an attractive solution for achieving precision in screw placement and osteotomies. METHODS: CT scan data (DICOM format)

High-concentration contrast media (HCCM) in CT angiography of the carotid system: impact on therapeutic decision making.

BACKGROUND: CT angiography (CTA) is a minimally invasive technique that enables precise delineation of extracranial and intracranial vascular anatomy and pathology based on high intravascular density. With a 64-slice MDCT scanner, improved first-pass vascular visualization can be obtained with HCCM (400 mg I/ml) using 25 ml for combined intra-and extracranial studies and 20 ml for intracranial examinations alone. We reviewed 23 patients with extra-cranial stenoocclusive disease and 12 patients with intra-cranial aneurysms. Two additional patients presented with a mycotic aneurysm and a micro a

Radiographic outcome and complications after single-level lumbar extended pedicle subtraction osteotomy for fixed sagittal malalignment: a retrospective analysis of 55 adult spinal deformity patients with a minimum 2-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVEFixed sagittal spinal malalignment is a common problem in adult spinal deformity (ASD). Various three-column osteotomy techniques, including the extended pedicle subtraction osteotomy (ePSO), may correct global and regional malalignment in this patient population. In contrast to the number of reports on traditional PSO (Schwab grade 3 osteotomy), there is limited literature on the outcomes of ePSO (Schwab grade 4 osteotomy) in ASD surgery. The objective of this retrospective study was to provide focused investigation of radiographic outcomes and complications of single-level lumbar eP

Endovascular stent graft repair of suture-line pseudoaneurysm following ascending aorta replacement.

Ascending aorta pseudoaneurysm (AAPA) is an uncommon complication following replacement of the ascending aorta with a prosthetic graft, carry a high risk of rupture, and warrant urgent intervention. The open surgical procedure "gold standard" of care is not always favorable, as the reoperations are technically more difficult or patient's general condition doesn't allow proceeding. Case discussed is an 80-year-old male patient who presented with worsening cough and hemoptysis. He underwent ascending aorta replacement 10 years ago. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a contrast-filled mediast

Imaging diagnosis-paraganglioma of the cauda equina: MR findings.

The magnetic resonance imaging features of a cauda equina paraganglioma in a 5-year-old dog are described. Imaging revealed a well-defined, strongly contrast-enhancing mass invading the adjacent vertebral body and infiltrating the intervertebral foramen bilaterally. Flow void, compatible with increased drainage veins around the mass, and macroscopically visible neovessels in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography, as reported in numerous human studies, were not visible in this single case. The tumor recurred despite aggressive surgery and radiotherapy. This neoplasm should be conside

An event-based model for disease progression and its application in familial Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease.

Understanding the progression of neurological diseases is vital for accurate and early diagnosis and treatment planning. We introduce a new characterization of disease progression, which describes the disease as a series of events, each comprising a significant change in patient state. We provide novel algorithms to learn the event ordering from heterogeneous measurements over a whole patient cohort and demonstrate using combined imaging and clinical data from familial Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease cohorts. Results provide new detail in the progression pattern of these diseases, while c
