Controlled Pilot Intervention Study on the Effects of an AI-Based Application to Support Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis and Pressure Injury Assessment, Nursing Care and Documentation: Study Protocol.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based applications have significant potential to differentiate between pressure injuries (PI) and incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), common challenges in nursing practice. Within the KIADEKU overall project, we are developing an AI-based application to aid in the nursing care of PI and IAD and to facilitate personalized, evidence-based nursing interventions. The KIADEKU clinical sub-study described in this study protocol is a controlled, non-randomized clinical pilot intervention study investigating the effects of the AI-based application, fully developed in

Social reward and nonsocial reward processing across the adult lifespan: An interim multi-echo fMRI and diffusion dataset.

Social relationships change across the lifespan as social networks narrow and motivational priorities shift. These changes may affect, or reflect, differences in how older adults make decisions related to processing social and non-social rewards. While we have shown initial evidence that older adults have a blunted response to some features of social reward, further work in larger samples is needed to replicate our results and probe the extent to which age-related differences translate to real world consequences, such as financial exploitation. To address this gap, we are conducting a 5-year s

Impaired Neural Pattern Separation During Implicit Emotion Regulation in PTSD: An MVPA fMRI Study.

Implicit emotion regulation (IER) operates automatically and supports adaptive social-affective functioning. Although PTSD involves marked IER disturbances, the large-scale functional connectivity architecture supporting implicit emotional processing remains unclear. The Shifted Attention Emotion Appraisal Task (SEAT) offers an ecologically relevant framework for probing these processes. One hundred twenty-three adults (PTSD: n = 78; trauma-exposed controls: n = 45) completed fMRI during SEAT. Whole-brain functional connectivity multivariate pattern analysis (fc-MVPA) identified data-driven, c

The transposed-word effect persists across text orientations in Chinese.

In speeded grammaticality decision tasks, the transposed-word effect occurs when ungrammatical word sequences created by swapping adjacent words in an otherwise grammatical sentence are harder to reject than control sequences derived from ungrammatical base sentences, providing evidence for flexible word-order processing during reading. Previous research shows that this effect is often attenuated in atypical display formats, including serial word presentation and backward text, especially in RTs. Some accounts interpret this pattern as a shift from parallel processing, in which multiple words

CARE-HOUSE: developing a framework for conceptualizing social implications of digital health technologies in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: The use of digital health technologies holds potential benefits for palliative care. Their implementation is fundamentally shifting routines and care practices. These shifts entail social implications that are complex, may emerge gradually and are challenging to identify. However, the social implications of digital health technologies are not conceptualized yet. This study addresses this gap by developing a framework on the social implications of digital technologies in palliative care, where the importance of social inclusion and interpersonal connection is particularly evident. The Reward Positivity Tracks Positive Reward Prediction Errors From Feedback to Cues During Reinforcement Learning.

How does the brain learn to predict rewards? According to temporal difference (TD) learning theory, reward prediction errors (RPEs) should shift from the time of outcome delivery to earlier predictive cues as stimulus-action-outcome associations are learned. The reward positivity, an electrophysiological signal believed to index sensitivity of the anterior midcingulate cortex to positive RPEs, should progressively transfer from feedback to predictive cues during learning. However, this core prediction of the reward positivity has remained largely untested. We recorded the EEG from 73 healthy a

The Role of Dopamine Signaling and Neuroinflammation in Age-Related Cognitive Dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Age-related cognitive decline is a growing public health concern, yet early molecular indicators remain poorly defined. Since brain changes often precede behavioral symptoms, identifying early markers of vulnerability is critical. Here, we investigated whether dopamine regulation and synaptic or inflammatory signaling might provide early indicators of cognitive decline, prior to behavioral impairment. Method and Finding: Female hooded-Lister rats at 6 (young) and 12 (age-unimpaired) months of age were tested using the novel object recognition (NOR) task, with no observable cognitive d

Adaptation and anticipation mechanisms under unpredictable auditory perturbations: The role of perturbation type, stimulus complexity and cerebellar impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Aligning movements with external rhythms depends on temporal adaptation and anticipation, jointly captured by the ADaptation and Anticipation Model (ADAM). Cerebellar pathology disrupts these mechanisms during gradual tempo changes, but its role in synchronization under unpredictable rhythmic structure remains unclear. METHODS: Sixty-one participants (16 cerebellar, 45 controls) performed a finger-tapping task at 100 beats-per-minute with phase-shifts (±90°) or period-changes (±10%). Synchronization was assessed by quantifying asynchrony (mean, variability) and modeled with ADAM

Stage-Dependent Effects of "Too Little and Too Much" Medial Prefrontal Activity on Reversal Learning in Rats: Functional Inhibition Impairs Early, Whereas Neural Disinhibition Impairs Late Reversals.

Schizophrenia is associated with prefrontal cortex dysfunction, including neural disinhibition (reduced GABAergic inhibition) and hypoactivation ("hypofrontality"), alongside impaired reversal learning. However, evidence implicating prefrontal regions, including the rodent medial PFC (mPFC), in reversal learning is mixed. mPFC involvement may scale with demand for mPFC-dependent attention and cognitive control to overcome prepotent responses and to learn that reward contingencies can reverse, which is highest during early reversals. We therefore hypothesized that (1) the mPFC is required for e

Facial emotion perception abilities are related to grey matter volume in the culmen of cerebellum anterior lobe in drug-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia.

Impaired capability for understanding and interpreting the expressions on other people's faces manifests itself as a core feature of schizophrenia, contributing to social dysfunction. With the purpose of better understanding of the neurobiological basis of facial emotion perception deficits in schizophrenia, we investigated facial emotion perception abilities and regional structural brain abnormalities in drug-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia, and then examined the correlation between them. Fifty-two drug-naive patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 29 group-matched healt

The Impact of a Change in Employment on Three Work-Related Diseases: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study of 10,530 Belgian Employees.

BACKGROUND: The literature that has investigated to what extent a change in employment contributes to good health is contradictory or shows inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to investigate whether an association exists between a change in employment and cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and neuropsychological diseases in a sample of 10,530 Belgian workers in a seven-year follow-up study period. METHODS: The following factors were analysed: Demographic variables, a change in employment and the work-related risks. Individuals being on medication for cardiovascular, musculoskeletal,

To rest or not to rest-Health care professionals' attitude toward recommending physical activity to their cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: While in the past cancer patients were advised to rest, recent research revealed various beneficial effects of physical activity, including increased treatment tolerability during cancer treatment and prolonged survival, which has led to a paradigm shift in relevant guidelines. This study examined if this paradigm shift from rest to activity has been consolidated in health care professionals' (HCP') attitude. It was investigated if the two dimensions of attitude (rest and activity) are endorsed empirically within the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Differences between physicians a

Methylmercury and nutrition: adult effects of fetal exposure in experimental models.

Human exposure to the life-span developmental neurotoxicant, methylmercury (MeHg), is primarily via the consumption of fish or marine mammals. Fish are also excellent sources of important nutrients, including selenium and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Laboratory models of developmental MeHg exposure can be employed to assess the roles of nutrients and MeHg and to identify potential mechanisms of action if the appropriate exposure measures are used. When maternal exposure is protracted, relationships between daily intake and brain mercury are consi

Novelty-seeking and directed exploration scale with dissociable social network outcomes and brain systems in older adults.

UNLABELLED: Social isolation and loneliness are major determinants of well-being in older adults. Shrinking social networks and age-related shifts in social behavior and decision-making may increase vulnerability to loneliness. These changes in social decision-making strategies can be conceptualized within an exploration-exploitation tradeoff framework, in which social options with known outcomes are prioritized over uncertain ones. Yet, no study has characterized how complementary decision-making strategies, undirected novelty seeking and goal-directed exploration, relate to social network co

Motor Impairment and Adaptation in a Novel Nonhuman Primate Model of Internal Capsule Infarct.

BACKGROUND: Loss of hand control is a major source of poststroke disability, particularly when infarcts involve subcortical white matter. Yet, most preclinical models target the cortex and infer recovery from task performance without quantifying whether improvements reflect restoration or adaptation. To address this, we developed a novel nonhuman primate model of focal internal capsule infarct. This study is exploratory and hypothesis-testing, including prespecified hypotheses regarding motor impairment and adaptation. METHODS: Three adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, 5-10 years) rec

Why vital signs observations are delayed and interrupted on acute hospital wards: A multisite observational study.

BACKGROUND: Vital signs monitoring is key to identifying deteriorating hospital patients. However, adherence to monitoring protocols is limited, with observations frequently missed or delayed. Previous studies of interruptions and delays to vital signs observations have been descriptive, with none attempting to conceptualise the types of tasks that are prioritised over vital signs observations. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore how nursing teams perform vital sign observations on acute hospital wards and conceptualises which types of work delay or interrupt them. DESIGN: Non-participant

A cross-cultural examination of bi-directional mentalising in autistic and non-autistic adults.

BACKGROUND: So-called 'mismatch accounts' propose that, rather than arising from a socio-cognitive deficit present in autistic people, mentalising difficulties are the product of a mismatch in neurotype between interaction partners. Although this idea has grown in popularity over recent years, there is currently only limited empirical evidence to support mismatch theories. Moreover, the social model of disability such theories are grounded in demands a culturally situated view of social interaction, yet research on mentalising and/or autism is largely biased towards Western countries, with lit

Evolutionary expansion of the corticospinal system is linked to dexterity in Peromyscus mice.

Animals have evolved behavioral variation to adapt to distinct environmental features. The expansion of neuron number is a potential neural mechanism underlying this behavioral adaptation. Corticospinal neurons (CSNs) are a classic example: an expansion in the corticospinal system in the primate lineage has been hypothesized to underlie their exceptional dexterity. However, the role of CSN number in behavior has been difficult to assess due to the large evolutionary distance between primates and less dexterous taxa with fewer CSNs. Here, we use deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to overcome th

Uni-AdaFocus: Spatial-Temporal Dynamic Computation for Video Recognition.

This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the phenomenon of data redundancy in video understanding, with the aim to improve computational efficiency. Our investigation commences with an examination of spatial redundancy, which refers to the observation that the most informative region in each video frame usually corresponds to a small image patch, whose shape, size and location shift smoothly across frames. Motivated by this phenomenon, we formulate the patch localization problem as a dynamic decision task, and introduce a spatially adaptive video recognition approach, termed AdaFocus

Exploitation and psychological strain in residency training: workload and shift violations in Turkish medical schools and research hospitals.

BACKGROUND: In Turkey, the path to specialisation is a highly demanding and costly process. After completing six years of intensive medical education, general practitioners must pass the highly competitive Medical Specialisation Examination (TUS) to enter residency training. To pass the examination for entry into specialist training, medical students in Turkey are compelled to attend highly expensive preparatory courses during the final two years of their six-year medical education. Additionally, graduates working as general practitioners often struggle to prepare for the specialist examinatio
