Motor imagery-based brain-computer interfaces: an exploration of multiclass motor imagery-based control for Emotiv EPOC X.

INTRODUCTION: Enhancing the command capacity of motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) remains a significant challenge in neuroinformatics, especially for real-world assistive applications. This study explores a multiclass BCI system designed to classify multiple MI tasks using a low-cost EEG device. METHODS: A BCI system was developed to classify six mental states: resting state, left and right hand movement imagery, tongue movement, and left and right lateral bending, using EEG data collected with the Emotiv EPOC X headset. Seven participants underwent a body awareness tr

Transformer-based hybrid systems to combat BCI illiteracy.

This study addresses the challenge of enhancing Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), focusing on low Signal-to-Noise Ratios and "BCI illiteracy" often affecting up to 20% of users. Transformer-based models show promise but remain underexplored. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment A assessed the performance of architectures combining Convolutional and Transformer Blocks for binary Motor Imagery (MI) classification. Experiment B introduced a hybrid system, refining both block types and adding a Noise Focus Block to infuse Stochastic Noise, enhancing multi-class classification robustness. E

Enhancing P300 based character recognition performance using a combination of ensemble classifiers and a fuzzy fusion method.

BACKGROUND: P300-based brain-computer interfaces provide communication pathways without the need for muscle activity by recognizing electrical signals from the brain. The P300 speller is one of the most commonly used BCI applications, as it is very simple and reliable, and it is capable of reaching satisfactory communication performance. However, as with other BCIs, it remains a challenge to improve the P300 speller's performance to increase its practical usability. NEW METHODS: In this study, we propose a novel multi-feature subset fuzzy fusion (MSFF) framework for the P300 speller to recogn

Planning the Surgical Correction of Spinal Deformities: Toward the Identification of the Biomechanical Principles by Means of Numerical Simulation.

In decades of technical developments after the first surgical corrections of spinal deformities, the set of devices, techniques, and tools available to the surgeons has widened dramatically. Nevertheless, the rate of complications due to mechanical failure of the fixation or the instrumentation remains rather high. Indeed, basic and clinical research about the principles of deformity correction and the optimal surgical strategies (i.e., the choice of the fusion length, the most appropriate instrumentation, and the degree of tolerable correction) did not progress as much as the implantable devi

Early clinical evaluation of a robot arm/worktable system for spinal-cord-injured persons.

In Part I, "Developmental Case Study", this evaluation traces anecdotally the increasing application of microcomputer technology in a research program examining the uses of a robot arm in the rehabilitation of the high-spinal-cord-injured person. This program, supported by the Veterans Administration since 1974, built upon still earlier VA-supported work at Johns Hopkins on powered upper-limb prostheses. The Johns Hopkins University powered shoulder prosthesis served as the basis for the Robotic Arm/Worktable System, whose evolution is described in applications ranging from handling simple rea

Predictive Soft Tissue Airway Volume Analysis in Mandibular Distraction: Pushing The Envelope in Surgical Planning for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Three-dimensional computed tomography has been used in both preoperative planning of mandibular distraction osteogenesis and in the evaluation of postoperative resolution of tongue-based airway obstruction. The authors present a case report using software to predict postdistraction airway volume during virtual surgical planning (VSP) of mandibular distraction osteogenesis in a 7 year old. The predicted increase in airway volume derived from VSP was 33.57% (1716 mm(3) preoperatively to 2292 mm(3) postvirtual distraction). Based on the three-dimensional computed tomography, the actual airway vol

Splintless orthognathic surgery: a novel technique using patient-specific implants (PSI).

In the past few years, advances in three-dimensional imaging have conducted to breakthrough in the diagnosis, treatment planning and result assessment in orthognathic surgery. Hereby error-prone and time-consuming planning steps, like model surgery and transfer of the face bow, can be eluded. Numerous positioning devices, in order to transfer the three-dimensional treatment plan to the intraoperative site, have been described. Nevertheless the use of positioning devices and intraoperative splints are failure-prone and time-consuming steps, which have to be performed during the operation and du

Computer-aided placement of deep brain stimulators: from planning to intraoperative guidance.

In current practice, optimal placement of deep-brain stimulators (DBSs) used to treat movement disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor is an iterative procedure. A target is chosen preoperatively based on anatomical landmarks identified on magnetic resonance images. This point is used as an initial position that is refined intraoperatively using both microelectrode recordings and macrostimulation. In this paper, we report on our current progress toward developing a system for the computer-assisted preoperative selection of target points and for the intraoperative ad

AMIDE: a free software tool for multimodality medical image analysis.

Amide's a Medical Image Data Examiner (AMIDE) has been developed as a user-friendly, open-source software tool for displaying and analyzing multimodality volumetric medical images. Central to the package's abilities to simultaneously display multiple data sets (e.g., PET, CT, MRI) and regions of interest is the on-demand data reslicing implemented within the program. Data sets can be freely shifted, rotated, viewed, and analyzed with the program automatically handling interpolation as needed from the original data. Validation has been performed by comparing the output of AMIDE with that of sev

HINTs: Sensemaking on Large Collections of Documents With Hypergraph Visualization and INTelligent Agents.

Sensemaking on a large collection of documents (corpus) is a challenging task often found in fields such as market research, legal studies, intelligence analysis, political science, or computational linguistics. Previous works approach this problem from topic- and entity-based perspectives, but the capability of the underlying NLP model limits their effectiveness. Recent advances in prompting with LLMs present opportunities to enhance such approaches with higher accuracy and customizability. However, poorly designed prompts and visualizations could mislead users into falsely interpreting the v

Mapping cognitive activity from electrocorticography field potentials in humans performing NBack task.

Objective. Advancements in data science and assistive technologies have made invasive brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) increasingly viable for enhancing the quality of life in physically disabled individuals. Intracortical microelectrode implants are a common choice for such a communication system due to their fine temporal and spatial resolution. The small size of these implants makes the implantation plan critical for the successful exfiltration of information, particularly when targeting representations of task goals that lack robust anatomical correlates.Approach. Motor imagery for severely motor-impaired patients: evidence for brain-computer interfacing as superior control solution.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) strive to decode brain signals into control commands for severely handicapped people with no means of muscular control. These potential users of noninvasive BCIs display a large range of physical and mental conditions. Prior studies have shown the general applicability of BCI with patients, with the conflict of either using many training sessions or studying only moderately restricted patients. We present a BCI system designed to establish external control for severely motor-impaired patients within a very short time. Within only six experimental sessions, thre

Analysis of computer-aided techniques for virtual planning in nasoalveolar moulding.

We compared two methods of planning virtual alveolar moulding as the first step in nasoalveolar moulding to provide the basis for an automated process to fabricate nasoalveolar moulding appliances by using computer-assisted design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). First, the initial intraoral casts taken from seven newborn babies with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate were digitised. This was repeated for the target models after conventional nasoalveolar moulding had been completed. The initial digital model for each patient was then virtually modified by two different modelli

Artificial Intelligence for Automatic Analysis of Shunt Treatment in Presurgery and Postsurgery Computed Tomography Brain Scans of Patients With Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt procedures can improve idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) symptoms. However, there are no automated methods that quantify the presurgery and postsurgery changes in the ventricular volume for computed tomography scans. Hence, the main goal of this research was to quantify longitudinal changes in the ventricular volume and its correlation with clinical improvement in iNPH symptoms. Furthermore, our objective was to develop an end-to-end graphical interface where surgeons can directly drag-drop a brain scan for quantified analysi
