This study was designed to assess the subjective and objective effects of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for treatment of snoring. We mailed a questionnaire dealing with snoring, quality of sleep, and interference with bed-partner's sleep to 100 unselected patients who were referred because of snoring. Replies were received from 69 patients. The answers were analyzed, and the subjective impressions were compared with preoperative and postoperative objective measurements of snoring and apnea. Uvulitis is an uncommonly reported disorder with the potential for significant morbidity. We describe three cases of uvulitis seen within a six month period in our emergency department. In two cases with respiratory distress, but without epiglottitis, Haemophilus influenzae was isolated from throat or blood cultures. The third case was associated with group A streptococcus tonsillitis and no respiratory compromise. Atypical presentations of upper airway infection with H. influenzae may be increasingly common.

Uvulopalatopharygoplasty has become widely performed for chronic snoring and for cases of obstructive sleep apnoea. Unfortunately this operation is not without morbidity and complications. We report our results of a prospective series of 50 patients undergoing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with a minimum follow-up of one year. Snoring was abolished in 18 (36 per cent) and substantially reduced in the remainder.
