CONCLUSIONS: Vestibulotomy above a severely displaced facial nerve represents a new surgical approach to achieve serviceable hearing. The lack of facial nerve injury and the potential for hearing restoration make this procedure feasible in patients who would otherwise be marginal or poor surgical candidates.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of vestibulotomy above a severely displaced facial nerve.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight patients with severe congenital conductive hearing loss underwent vestibulotomy above a severely displaced facial nerve and hearing reconstruction between Janua

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on postural stability in healthy volunteers. The study was performed in accordance with treatment protocols for divers' decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning.
METHODS: Twenty-one healthy male divers, aged 31 +/- 6.88 years (mean +/- SD), were tested with quantitative Romberg's test before and after HBO (90 min in a pressure chamber at an ambient pressure of 253 kPa, approximately 15 m of sea water, breathing pure oxygen). The quantitative Romberg's test is a calculation of the avera

OBJECTIVES: We sought to elucidate the clinical problems and otopathology of patients with sudden deafness with vertigo (SDV).
METHODS: In 24 patients with SDV who had significant canal paresis (CP) at their first visit to our hospital between 1997 and 2001, we examined pure tone audiograms, caloric tests, and several questionnaires twice, at the first visit within 5 days after the onset and around 2 years after steroid therapy.
RESULTS: These examinations revealed that improvements of auditory and vestibular function in patients with SDV tended to be correlated with one another. Sixteen of

UNLABELLED: In 1973 Lücke described nystagmus induced by application of a vibrator on the mastoid process. Since that time, several Authors have applied the vibrator test in normal subjects or patients suffering from various well-characterized conditions.
OBJECTIVE: Recognizing that results obtained with the vibrator test are sometimes in contradiction with those of other vestibular tests, our aim was to formulate an assumption regarding the genesis of induced nystagmus in an attempt to explain such contradictions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We considered seven very different clinical situations.

Vestibular neuronitis was described in 1949 and 1952 by Dix and Hallpike. Two groups of patients were described, those with sudden seizures and sensations of blackout (since identified as having vestibular neuritis) and a second group with symptoms of disequilibrium and feelings of top-heaviness or imbalance. The pathology was believed to be central to the inner ear. Arslan labeled these groups as having nucleoreticular vestibular syndrome. Using a suprathreshold stapedial reflex test, Bosatra localized the pathophysiology in the brainstem, an area rich in serotonergic neurons. This author has

Compensatory behavior such as oculomotor, gaze, and postural responses that occur during movement largely depend upon a functioning vestibular system. In the present study, the initial loss and subsequent recovery of postural and head stability in pigeons undergoing vestibular regeneration were examined. Adult pigeons were trained to manipulate a straight run chamber to peck an illuminated key for fluid reward. Six behavioral measures assessing performance, posture, and head stability were quantified. These included run latency, steps (walking), path negotiation (lane changes), gaze saccades,

Besides Tullio's phenomenon, resulting from anatomic changes in the labyrinth, a hypersensitivity to acoustic stimuli of the saccular structures appears to be the underlying cause of the vestibular responses detected in some patients. In order to evaluate the incidence of vestibular symptoms triggered by acute exposure to auditory stress (disco music), 40 subjects aged between 18 and 26 years, with no audiological and vestibular disorders, were submitted to otoneurologic tests. Subjects were exposed to disco music [intensity 128 dB (C)], for 3 hours. Tests have been carried out before and imme

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this study was to compare the results of vestibular testing in individuals with motion sickness to a group of control subjects.
BACKGROUND: Studying motion sickness is difficult, because no animal model has been developed and symptoms rarely occur outside motion environments. Tests that can be performed in normal laboratory settings, which help to identify individuals with motion sickness, may be valuable in characterizing this disorder.
METHODS: Twenty active duty military individuals with well-documented motion sickness were tested. The test battery included sinusoi

Altered gravity environments including both hypo- and hypergravity can elicit motion sickness. Vestibular information is known to be essential for motion sickness, but its other neural substrates are poorly understood. We previously showed that bilateral lesions of the amygdala suppressed hypergravity-induced motion sickness in rats, using pica behavior as an emetic index. We show in the present study that during hypergravity stimulation, vestibular information activated the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA), as determined by the induction of Fos expression, in comparison between normal an

BACKGROUND: As a parameter for the evaluation of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), amplitude has been used clinically. However, the significance of latency has not been considered.
OBJECTIVE: To clarify the diagnostic value of latencies of the VEMP.
DESIGN: We reviewed records of the VEMP of patients with various diseases and compared them with records of healthy volunteers.
SETTING: Data were collected from patients in an outpatient clinic of a tertiary care center and healthy volunteers.
SUBJECTS: Clinical records of 134 patients (61 men and 73 women, aged 20-75 years) wer

BACKGROUND: Dandy's Syndrome initially provokes dizziness and vertigo. Later on patients suffer from motion unsteadiness especially in dark surroundings and from oscillopsies. Gentamicin is ototoxic mostly for the vestibular part of the inner ear, and it is nephrotoxic. It may cause transitory renal dysfunction. Chronic or acute renal insufficiencies inhibit gentamicin clearance.
PATIENTS: Among 20 cases we found 15 who had previously been treated with aminoglycosides (13 with gentamicin and two with streptomycin). Ten of our patients showed symptoms of preexistant chronic nephrosis or of tra

Bilateral surgical lesions of the flocculus or the nodulo-uvular lobes were performed in the cat. Effects of these lesions on optokinetic and optokinetic afternystagmus OKAN), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), visual suppression, and adaptation and habituation of VOR were studied using an identical experimental protocol. After flocculectomy, all these functions were impaired, except for habituation. Long-term postoperative recordings only revealed a recovery of the suppression of VOR, suggesting a limited contribution of the flocculus to this function. After nodulo-uvulectomy, only habituation an

The vestibular system and vestibulo-visual interaction were examined in 11 astronauts by the electrooculographic (EOG) method during short- and long-term flights on days 2, 3, 5, 9, 22, 50, 164, and 169 (experiments OPTOKINES and LABYRINTH). In space (flight days 2 and 3), they showed enhanced spontaneous vertical nystagmus, and disorders of tracking of vertical and diagonal movements of the stimulus which improved after active head movements. Early increasing of the reactivity of the cupulo-endolymphatic system (flight days 2-3) was replaced after 5 days of flight with a reduction of the vest

Using kaolin intake as a behavioral index of emesis in rats, we examined the relationship between susceptibility to motion sickness and to emesis induced by apomorphine or copper sulfate. Rats showed a wide variation in susceptibility to motion sickness. Significant positive correlations were found between susceptibility to motion sickness and to emesis induced by intraperitoneal administration of apomorphine and by oral administration of copper sulfate. Motion, apomorphine and copper sulfate induce emesis through different receptors, so these findings suggest that the sensitivity of a common

Vestibulological examination of boxers revealed that 80% had vestibular abnormalities. These were obvious, but well compensated, so that they remained hidden in everyday life and appeared only on laboratory examination or under stress. Regarding the origin of vestibulo-ocular reflex, abnormalities in boxing contribute three etiopathogenetic factors: the first is the direct traumatization of the vestibular apparatus by a direct blow. The second is the diffuse damage of the brain-stem white matter and of vestibular nuclei. The third factor is the traumatization of the cervical spine via the trau
