Report of a patient with aortic dissection evolving into binocular ischemic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Carotid artery disease is known to cause a variety of ischemic ocular syndromes. We report a patient with an aortic dissection that evolved into binocular ischemic retinopathy. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 49-year-old male patient presented with stomach pains and with no ophthalmologic symptoms. After extensive examination, a diagnosis of aortic dissection was made to account for the acute abdominal pain. Sixteen days later, he noted binocular photopsia and ophthalmoscopy revealed ischemic retinopathy. Arterial stent implantation and right coronary reconstitution surgery were

Follow-up of 3 patients with Ridley intraocular lens implantation.

Three patients in whom Ridley intraocular lenses (IOLs) were successfully implanted more than 42 years ago are presented. One case had traumatic cataract at age 13. The other 2 had surgery for unilateral cataract of unknown etiology at about age 40 and surgery on the second eye approximately 40 years later. A review of other reports of late-term results with this IOL is included.

An analysis of intraocular lens exchange.

We present an analysis of 101 eyes of 98 consecutive patients who underwent intraocular lens (IOL) exchange. The period of follow up ranged from 6 to 71 months (mean, 23 months). Bullous keratopathy was the leading (86.7%) indication for IOL exchange in 45 eyes that had combined penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) and IOL exchange (PKP group). Lens dislocation (36%) and incorrect power (25%) were the most frequent indications for IOL exchange without PKP (56 eyes) (NPKP group). A final visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved in 50.5% of the 101 eyes, with 88% having two lines of improvement o

Long-term outcomes of anterior cervical dynamic implants: motion-sparing or a delayed fusion?

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Use of an anterior cervical dynamic implant (ACDI) is generally considered a nonfusion technique for treating cervical degenerative disorders. However, there is limited research focused on evaluating the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of ACDI. PURPOSE: To analyze the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of ACDI in the treatment of degenerative cervical disorders. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS SAMPLE: Patients with degenerative cervical disorders who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and dynamic cervical implant (DCI) impl

Clinical outcomes of the PAUL glaucoma implant in primary open-angle and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma eyes after failed glaucoma surgeries.

PURPOSE: This study assesses the PAUL® glaucoma implant (PGI) in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) after failed glaucoma surgery. Given PEXG's more aggressive nature, limited research exists on PGI outcomes in this subgroup. This study aims to compare PGI's efficacy and safety in both conditions. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including patients undergoing PGI surgery at the University Eye Hospital Bonn, Germany, from April 2021 to January 2024. Patients were enrolled in a database at the time of surgery, with follow-up data collected at each visi

Early results of allograft intrastromal ring segment for keratoconus.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a novel nomogram for implanting allograft intrastromal ring segments in keratoconus patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 86 eyes of 86 patients who were followed for 6 months. Patients were treated using the Istanbul nomogram, which is used to guide the creation of corneal tunnels, utilizing a femtosecond laser, with dimensions of 4×7.5mm and a depth of 200μm. Sterile allograft corneal rings (KeraNatural™) were implanted at the precise location of the cone. Pre- and postoperative measurements of SE, CDVA, UDVA, keratometry

Spectrum of Scleral Lens Fit and Patient Compliance: A Single Center Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: To discuss the results of scleral contact lens fit in patients with difficult corneal and ocular surface pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center, retrospective case-series included 49 eyes of 34 patients who underwent scleral lens fitting for visual acuity improvement from February 2018 to 2023. All patients underwent Orbscan/Pentacam corneal topography before a complete ophthalmological exam. The first trial lens was chosen according to manufacturer guidelines and topographic parameters. Best corrected Snellen visual acuity was assessed with spectacles before fit a

Real-world outcomes of scleral-fixated intraocular lens: a multi-surgeon study comparing four-point fixation and flanged intrascleral haptic fixation techniques.

PURPOSE: To compare outcomes between two scleral-fixed intraocular lens (IOL) (SFIOL) techniques: four-point fixation and flanged intrascleral haptic fixation. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted between 2018 and 2022 on eyes that underwent SFIOL using either four-point fixation or flanged intrascleral haptic fixation. We compared the visual outcomes and postoperative complications between groups. Subgroup analyses were performed for eyes that underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), flanged intrascleral haptic fixation with versus without PPV, and high myopia versus non-high myop

Modified Four-Flanged Intrascleral Fixation of Foldable Intraocular Lenses Using a 1-Inch, 30-Gauge Needle for Extraocular Suture Threading.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of modified four-flanged intrascleral fixation of foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) using a 1-inch 30-gauge needle for extraocular suture threading. METHODS: This retrospective case series included 20 eyes of 20 patients who underwent four-flanged intrascleral IOL fixation using a 1-inch 30-gauge needle, with at least 6 months of follow-up. We modified the original Canabrava technique by inserting a foldable IOL through a 2.4-mm clear corneal incision with a standard injector and performing extraocular suture threading with a 1-inch 30-gauge needl

A novel modified flapless surgical technique for sutureless scleral fixation of FIL SSF intraocular lens: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomical and functional outcomes of sutureless scleral fixation of FIL SSF intraocular lens (FIL SSF IOL- Soleko S.P.A. Pontecorvo, Italy) using a novel modified flapless surgical technique. METHODS: In this prospective study, patients older than 18 years with IOL-bag complex subluxation and a minimum follow-up of 24 months were included. At 2.5 mm from the limbus, two circumferential partial-thickness scleral grooves, 4 mm in length, were sculpted at 3 and 9 o'clock with a 300 microns pre-calibrated knife.
