Integrated chronic care models for people with comorbid of HIV and non-communicable diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Integrated health care is an approach characterized by a high degree of collaboration and communication among health professionals. Integration of HIV/NCD is recommended to enhance the quality of healthcare services being provided. Duplication of limited resources is minimized, and a holistic care approach is promoted by shifting from acute and reactive care to care that embraces patient-centredness that includes promotive health and disease surveillance. The high burden of HIV disease in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) combined with the increasing prevalence of chronic non-communicable d

Household living conditions and individual behaviours associated with malaria risk: a community-based survey in the Limpopo River Valley, 2020, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, implementation of multiple malaria control strategies in most countries has largely contributed to advance the global malaria elimination agenda. Nevertheless, in some regions, seasonal epidemics may adversely affect the health of local populations. In South Africa, Plasmodium falciparum malaria is still present, with the Vhembe District experiencing an incidence rate of 3.79 cases/1000 person-years in 2018, particularly in the Limpopo River Valley, bordering Zimbabwe. To elucidate the complexity of the mechanisms involved in local regular malaria outbreaks, a

Envirotyping-driven strategies to enhance soybean adaptation across Southern Africa.

UNLABELLED: Soybean has become a strategic crop in global agricultural systems due to its central role as a source of vegetable protein and oil, while rising demand and increasing environmental variability continue to challenge cultivar development and deployment. In this context, Southern Africa has emerged as a promising region for soybean expansion, although progress remains constrained by strong genotype-by-environment interaction (G [Formula: see text] E) interactions and the limited availability of adapted cultivars. Thus, this study aimed to (i) delineate Macro Environments (MACROs) thr

Application of Process Mapping to catalyze integration of HIV services in cancer care.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization advocates for integrated health services in low- and middle-income countries, with special focus on care for non-communicable diseases within HIV care. HIV diagnosis and management with antiretroviral therapy (ART) are crucial components of whole-person care; in addition to improving overall survival, ART provides basic immunotherapy during cancer treatment. However, most cancer centers in Africa are not currently equipped to provide integrated HIV care. We conducted process mapping at referral cancer centers in Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimb

SAGES white paper: strategic principles, operational considerations, and practical recommendations for building sustainable laparoscopic surgical training in low-resource settings: a 10-step guide.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery provides clear benefits to patient outcomes and is now standard practice in high-income countries. However, it remains underutilized in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to limited training opportunities, infrastructure, mentorship, and long-term program sustainability. Recognizing these challenges, the Global Affairs Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) launched the Global Laparoscopic Advancement Program (GLAP) to build sustainable laparoscopic training capacity. Over the past decade, GLAP has

Characterizing tuberculosis diagnosis and the associations with economic instability and employment discrimination among women living with HIV across 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Global estimates among people living with HIV demonstrate that more incident cases and more deaths due to TB occur among women than men. Simultaneously, women experience higher levels of under and unpaid work compared to men. Given that poverty is an established determinant for TB, the aim of this study is to characterize the role of HIV-related employment discrimination and legal protections on TB outcomes for women living with HIV. METHODS: The People Living with HIV Stigma Index 2.0 study was implem

Real-world vaccine effectiveness of typhoid conjugate vaccine in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonellaenterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), can be transmitted via faecal-oral route. Although significant reduction in incidence from 11 million in 2017 to 7 million in 2021, typhoid fever remains a global health problem. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended implementation of typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) in endemic countries. However, only ten countries have introduced TCV into their national immunisation programs to date. This study aims to estimate the real-world effectiveness of TCV to inform evidence-based decision making and support i

Cost-effectiveness of the dual prevention pill for contraception and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis.

INTRODUCTION: Women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience the world's highest rates of both HIV infection and unintended pregnancy. The Dual Prevention Pill (DPP) is a novel multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) that co-formulates HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and combined hormonal oral contraception into a single daily pill. As a dual indication product, the DPP may be preferred by women facing these overlapping health risks. However, most SSA countries face severe healthcare resource constraints. Research is needed to assess whether, in what populations, and in what use cases the D

Insecticide-treated net utilization and associated factors among pregnant women in East Africa: evidence from the recent national demographic and health surveys, 2011-2022.

BACKGROUND: The pregnant woman, the fetus, and the newborn child are all at risk from malaria infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Employing insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) is one of the most efficient methods for avoiding malaria among expectant mothers. However, there is no literature that describes ITN use among pregnant women in East Africa or the contributing factors. Therefore, this study sought to identify the factors affecting pregnant women's ITN utilization in East Africa. METHODS: The most recent DHS (Demographic and Health Survey) data for the 11 East African countries from 2

Health-related needs reported by adolescents living with HIV and receiving antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have specific health needs that can be challenging to deliver. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is home to 84% of the global population of ALHIV, of whom about 59% receive ART. Several studies in SSA have demonstrated health service gaps due to lack of synchronized healthcare for ALHIV receiving ART. We conducted a systematic review of health-related needs among ALHIV on ART in SSA to inform decisions and policies on care. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane library and grey literatu

Age patterns of HIV incidence in eastern and southern Africa: a modelling analysis of observational population-based cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: As the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa matures, evidence about the age distribution of new HIV infections and how this distribution has changed over the epidemic is needed to guide HIV prevention. We aimed to assess trends in age-specific HIV incidence in six population-based cohort studies in eastern and southern Africa, reporting changes in mean age at infection, age distribution of new infections, and birth cohort cumulative incidence. METHODS: We used a Bayesian model to reconstruct age-specific HIV incidence from repeated observations of individuals' HIV serostatus and sur

Self-collected and clinician-collected anal swabs show modest agreement for HPV genotyping.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Women with HIV/HPV coinfection and cervical lesions are at increased risk of developing HPV related anal cancer. Self-collection of anal swabs may facilitate HPV molecular testing in anal cancer screening, especially in high-risk groups, and yet it is not adequately studied. We evaluated level of agreement between self-collected anal swabs (SCAS) and clinician-collected anal swabs (CCAS) when used for HPV genotyping. We also described the anal HPV genotype distribution and HIV/HPV coinfection. METHODS: We performed a cross sectional study with participants from a visual-insp

Modelling impact and cost-effectiveness of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis in 13 low-resource countries.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) provision is a priority intervention for high HIV prevalence settings and populations at substantial risk of HIV acquisition. This mathematical modelling analysis estimated the impact, cost and cost-effectiveness of scaling up oral PrEP in 13 countries. METHODS: We projected the impact and cost-effectiveness of oral PrEP between 2018 and 2030 using a combination of the Incidence Patterns Model and the Goals model. We created four PrEP rollout scenarios involving three priority populations-female sex workers (FSWs), serodiscordant couples (SDC
