Acuity assessment of non-verbal infants and children: clinical experience with the acuity card procedure.

The acuity card procedure was used to assess the visual acuity of 510 neurologically normal and abnormal infants and children. Acuity estimates were obtained for 93 per cent of 842 binocular and 279 monocular tests. The observed development of binocular acuity of normal fullterm and preterm infants agreed well with previous reports using the traditional forced-choice preferential looking technique. Monocular tests seemed to support earlier suggestions that grating acuity may be relatively insensitive to strabismic amblyopia. Infants at risk of later neurological deficits but developing normall…

Ocular adnexal injury and complications in orbital dog bites.

Orbital dog bites, though statistically uncommon, occur most frequently in children and are associated with severe ocular adnexal injury. Of 16 victims, two-thirds were under 10 and over half under 5 years of age. The wounds consisted of numerous periorbital punctures, and in most cases, full-thickness lid lacerations involving the tear system. There were no serious injuries to the globe. Reversible amblyopia occurred in two children under 3 years of age with damage to the levator muscle. One child suffered a naso-orbital fracture. Because of the obvious nature of the injury, most patients pre…

Dissociated vertical deviation: evidence of abnormal visual pathway projection.

Abnormalities in visually evoked responses have been used to demonstrate abnormal optic nerve fibre projections in human albinos, who have a … ents with dissociated vertical deviation. These results occurred regardless of the visual acuity or amblyopia of the eyes tested. The possible existence of abnormal pathway projection in the presence of dissociated vertical deviation is discussed.

The 1980 and 1981 accident experience of civil airmen with selected visual pathology.

In studies of the 1974-76 accident experience of U.S. general aviation pilots with static physical defects, those with blindness or absence of either eye had significantly increased rates and ratios. A 1979 study found that 1,140 pilots with aphakia and 173 with artificial lens implants had significantly higher rates, but the monocular pilots did not. The present study examined the 1980-81 accident experience of 4,169 monocular pilots, 1,299 with amblyopia, 969 with aphakia, 285 with lens implants, 118 with a history of diplopia, 1,269 with a tropia, 2,601 with hyperphoria greater than 1 diopt…

Macrocephaly with hamartomas: Bannayan-Zonana syndrome.

Familial macrocephaly with mesodermal hamartomas is described as a distinct syndrome in nine individuals from four families. Constant manife … s (66%), a high palate (67%), joint hyperextensibility (55%), pectus excavatum (22%), strabismus or amblyopia (33%), and prolonged drooling (44%). The Bannayan-Zonana syndrome is an autosomal-dominant trait with male predominance of affected individuals.

Clinical presentation and management of congenital ptosis.

Congenital ptosis is a rare condition characterized by lower positioning of the upper eyelid that is present at birth and is a clinical condition that is persistent if not treated. It may be unilateral or bilateral and may be associated with other ocular disorders or systemic conditions, including Marcus Gunn, Horner, and Duane syndromes. It is a benign condition but causes functional, cosmetic, and psychological problems in children. However, not all patients need to undergo surgery, and usually only patients at risk of amblyopia need a prompt surgical correction, while in other cases, surger…

Detection of central fixation using short-time autoregressive spectral estimation during retinal birefringence scanning.

The manuscript reports on the implementation of autoregressive spectral estimation aimed at improving the accuracy of detecting short-lastin … originally with the purpose of checking for eye alignment and strabismus - a major risk factor for amblyopia. The method enables the technology to work with less-cooperative patients, such as young children. Other medical and non-medical applications are possible.

Deficits in the processing of local and global motion in very low birthweight children.

This study evaluated the impact of premature birth on the development of local and global motion processing in a group of very low birthweight (<1500 g), 5- to 8-year-old children. Sensitivity to first- and second-order local motion stimuli and coherence thresholds for global motion in random dot kinematograms were measured. Relative to full-term controls, premature children showed deficits on all three aspects of motion processing. These problems could not be accounted for by stereo deficits, amblyopia, or attentional problems. A history of mild retinopathy of prematurity and/or intraventricu…

The genetics of strabismus.

Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes; also known as "squint") comprises a common heterogeneous group of disorders characterised by a constant or intermittent ocular deviation often associated with amblyopia (uniocular failure of normal visual development) and reduced or absent binocular vision. The associated poor cosmetic appearance may also interfere with social and psychological development. Extensive twin and family studies suggest a significant genetic component to the aetiology of strabismus. The complexity of the molecular basis of strabismus is now beginning to be elucidated with the i…

[Retinopathy in premature infants].

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is found in about 30% of premature infants with a birth weight < 1500 g and/or a gestational age < 32 weeks … ly born children have a higher risk of developing other ophthalmologic problems such as strabismus, amblyopia and refractive errors. Again, timely detection and treatment reduces the risk of permanent visual disability.

Idiopathic tractional corectopia.

Four infants were referred for congenital unilateral corectopia. In each case, the abnormal position of the pupil was caused by a fibrous structure that tethered the iris pupillary margin to the peripheral cornea. No patients showed characteristics of intrauterine infection, Rieger anomaly, ectopia lentis et pupillae, or iris coloboma. Amblyopia was not present in any of the patients. Three children demonstrated progression of the corectopia in the first 6 months of life. Two who developed shallow anterior chambers were treated surgically, one with an Nd:YAG laser and the other with incisional…

Visual information travels from the retina to visual cortical areas along at least two parallel pathways. In this paper, anatomical and phys … omprise the functioning of M- or P-pathways (i.e., glaucoma, Alzheimer's disease, and anisometropic amblyopia), and some of the spatial and temporal deficits observed in these patients are presented within the context of the dysfunction of the M- or P-pathway.

School children severely afflicted with cerebral palsy, but unselected in regard to their visual status. have been studied. Of 120 children examined only 24 (20%) had normal eyes or ocular adnexae. A number of other ocular abnormalities were found, the majority of which were not amenable to any form of treatment. Cyanides and their toxicity: A literature review.

Summary Cyanide is a potent and rapidly-acting asphyxiant which prevents tissue utilization of oxygen by inhibition of the cellular respiratory enzyme, cytochrome oxidase. Inhalation or ingestion of cyanide produces reactions within a few seconds and death within minutes. Cyanide toxicity of dietary origin has been implicated in acute animal deaths and as major etiologic factors in toxic ataxic neuropathy in man and as a cause of vision failure in humans suffering from tobacco amblyopia and leber's hereditary optic atrophy. Diagnosis of cyanide toxicity may be confirmed by a variety of laborat…

Attitude and related factors towards strabismus among adults living in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

Cultural belief in Ethiopia showed that strabismus can be caused by exposure to sunlight during infancy, an outrage from God, and looking sideways. In addition, Ethiopians also believe that strabismus can resolve by its self and is a sign of good luck. Due to these reasons many patients with strabismus come to eye care clinics after developing amblyopia. This study aimed to assess the level of attitude and related factors toward strabismus among adults living in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample size of 634 adults from April 9 to…
