Inhibitory Learning-based Exposure Response Prevention Therapy in Obsessive-compulsive Disorder: A Development and Efficacy Trial Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIS) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), comprising exposure and response prevention (ERP), are the first line of treatment for obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD). However, many patients fail to achieve clinically significant symptom relief from traditional exposure-based therapies. This has led to research on strategies that can optimize the effects of ERP. Inhibitory learning theory (ILT) provides a novel foundation for understanding how exposure therapy reduces fear and has been mainly studied in the context of anxiety and phobia. NOVELTY: T

Impact of MAOA Gene Polymorphism on the Efficacy of Antidepressant Treatment and Craving Severity for Betel Quid Use Disorder.

Betel quid (BQ) use disorder (BUD) is prevalent in many Asian countries, impacting approximately 600 million people. We conducted a randomized clinical trial to analyze the impact of MAOA genetic variations on the severity of BQ craving. This was measured using DSM-5 criteria and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for betel quid use (Y-BOCS-BQ). Participants were grouped according to the severity of BUD and MAOA gene single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs5953210 genotypes. The Y-BOCS-BQ scores were assessed at baseline (week 0) and during follow-up at weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8. The

Acute effects of deep brain stimulation on brain function in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) yet neural markers of optimized stimulation parameters are largely unknown. We aimed to describe (sub-)cortical electrophysiological responses to acute DBS at various voltages in OCD. METHODS: We explored how DBS doses between 3-5 V delivered to the ventral anterior limb of the internal capsule of five OCD patients affected electroencephalograms and intracranial local field potentials (LFPs). We focused on theta power/ phase-stability, given their previously established role in

Crazy'App: A web survey on representations and attitudes toward mental disorders using video testimonies.

UNLABELLED: In the international context of efforts to combat the stigmatization of people with mental health problems, representations and attitudes about these illnesses have not to date been widely investigated in France. However, new technologies offer an unprecedented opportunity to collect such information on a large scale and to deploy more efficient action against stigma. OBJECTIVES: The Crazy'App survey was designed as an instrument for studying potentially stigmatizing representations and attitudes towards mental disorders. It asks respondents to react, rather than to standard diagn

Neurocognitive deficits associated with shoplifting in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: Shoplifting is a relatively common behavior in young adults, but the demographic and neuropsychological correlates of shoplifting remain poorly characterized in this context. METHOD: Non-treatment-seeking young adults (18-29 years) were recruited from the general community on the basis of having no Axis I disorders, no history of illicit substance use, and no history of conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder. Participants were grouped according to presence or absence of shoplifting (at least 1 time over the past 12 months). Measures relating to impulsivity along with

Homotypic versus heterotypic continuity of anxiety symptoms in young adolescents: evidence for distinctions between DSM-IV subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate homotypic and heterotypic longitudinal patterns of symptoms of separation anxiety disorder (SAD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SoPh), panic disorder (PD), and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in young adolescents from the Dutch general population. METHOD: 2,067 individuals (51.4% girls) from a Dutch community sample, who were assessed for the first time when they were aged 10 to 12 years, were followed up across a period of two years. At both assessments, anxiety symptoms were assessed with the RCADS, a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS: Re

A systematic review of transcranial magnetic stimulation for generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: The evidence base addressing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for behavioral health conditions other than treatment-resistant depression is not well established. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of TMS for persons with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO were searched for English language studies published from inception through July 7, 2025. Eligibility criteria included randomized, sham-controlled trials (RCTs) enrolling

Patient Experience With Rechargeable Deep Brain Stimulation Generators for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rechargeable deep brain stimulation (DBS) systems extend device lifespan and reduce replacement surgeries, but patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) require higher stimulation and more frequent recharging. We highlight patient experiences with DBS rechargeable implantable pulse generators (RC IPGs) for treatment of OCD within a single-institution cohort, focusing on charging routines, perceived vs actual charge burden, and the unique considerations of RC technology in psychiatric DBS therapy. METHODS: We interviewed OCD patients with implanted RC IPGs to

Latent Trajectories of Common Mental Health Disorder Risk Across 3 Decades of Adulthood in a Population-Based Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Epidemiologic evidence indicates that most of the general population will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. However, few prospective population-based studies have estimated trajectories of risk for mental disorders from young through middle adulthood to estimate the proportion of individuals who experience persistent mental disorder across this age period. OBJECTIVES: To describe the proportion of the population who experience persistent mental disorder across adulthood and to estimate latent trajectories of disorder risk across this age period. DE

The behavioral impact of growth hormone treatment for children and adolescents with Prader-Willi syndrome: a 2-year, controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterized by obesity, hypotonia, hypogonadism, hyperphagia, short stature, and a neurobehavioral profile that includes cognitive deficits, learning problems, and behavioral difficulties that increase in both quantity and severity over time. PWS results from an alteration in the molecular composition of a critical region of C#15q. Morbid obesity resulting from hyperphagia is amplified by decreased energy expenditure and reduced physical activity. The hyperphagia has proven refractory to all psychopharmocologic intervention; the behavioral compone

Thirty-month outcome in patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and concomitant obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines whether concomitant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) indicates a poorer prognosis for patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Seventy-five female inpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for anorexia or bulimia nervosa took part in the follow-up study; 29 of these patients met criteria for concomitant OCD. All patients were investigated twice: during inpatient treatment and at follow-up 30 months after discharge. A semistructured diagnostic interview was used as well as the Eating Disorder Inventory and the Hamburg Obsession-Compulsion Inventory--

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a large clinical cohort of children with Tourette syndrome.

There is evidence that cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical pathways are involved in the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome. During the performance of neuropsychological tests in subjects with Tourette syndrome there are suggestions for increased activity in the sensimotor cortex, supplementary motor areas, and frontal cortex. To replicate findings, the authors examined 22 medication-naive children with Tourette syndrome only, 17 medication-naive children with Tourette syndrome and comorbidity, and 39 healthy controls with functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There were no differences in

Twenty-four-week treatment with extended release methylphenidate improves emotional symptoms in adult ADHD.

OBJECTIVES: Treatment investigations with methylphenidate in adults with ADHD focus preferentially on the classical psychopathology: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADHD-associated emotional symptoms, which are frequently present at least in ADHD subpopulations, were studied rarely. The vast majority of the placebo-controlled trials had observation periods between 4 and 8 weeks. To assess the medium- to long-term effects of extended release methylphenidate (MPH-ER) on emotional symptoms and other psychopathology frequently seen in ADHD patients, we conducted a large-scale, multicen

Longitudinal assessment of symptom and subtype categories in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although it has been postulated that symptom subtypes are potential predictors of treatment response, few data exist on the longitudinal course of symptom and subtype categories in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Putative subtypes of OCD have gradually gained more recognition, but as yet there is no generally accepted subtype discrimination. Subtypes, it has been suggested, could perhaps be discriminated based on autogenous versus reactive obsessions stemming from different cognitive processes. In this study, our aim was to assess whether symptom and subtype categories change over time. U

Quality of life and functional impairment in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a comparison of patients with and without comorbidity, patients in remission, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with interference in quality of life (QOL) and functional impairment. However, these studies did not compare individuals in remission to individuals who continue to have the disorder, predominantly used comparisons with norms and not with a matched normal sample, and did not always consider the impact of comorbidity. METHODS: We administered multiple measures that assess QOL and functional impairment to 66 OCD patients who had previously consented for a clinical trial and to 36 age and sex mat

Gender non-binary adolescents' somatic and mental health throughout 2020.

BACKGROUND: Non-binary gender adolescents are particularly vulnerable and more likely to be exposed to several socio-psychological difficulties and disorders. It is vital to discover and act on the vulnerabilities they encounter. The present study aims to describe the somatic and mental health, affect state, frequency of risk behaviors, victimization and negative psychosocial factors, as well as the personality profiles of non-binary adolescents. In this study the concept of gender non-binary is used and captured respondents who selected "neither of these" as their gender from the possible opt

Pretreatment attrition and formal withdrawal during treatment and their predictors: an exploratory study of the anxiety online data.

BACKGROUND: Although in its infancy, the field of e-mental health interventions has been gaining popularity and afforded considerable research attention. However, there are many gaps in the research. One such gap is in the area of attrition predictors at various stages of assessment and treatment delivery. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study applied univariate and multivariate analysis to a large dataset provided by the Anxiety Online (now called Mental Health Online) system to identify predictors of attrition in treatment commencers and in those who formally withdrew during treatment based on

Psychopathological Comorbidities in Children and Adolescents with Feeding and Eating Disorders: An Italian Clinical Study.

OBJECTIVES: Feeding and eating disorders (FED) represent a major public health issue and are the second leading cause of death among psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents. Psychopathological comorbidities play a significant role in the onset and persistence of FED, yet research on their underlying structure remains limited. This study explores the psychiatric comorbidities associated with FED, focusing on common etiopathogenetic factors and their clinical implications. METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from the Italian Regional Center for FED in the Emilia-Romagna Regi

Neural mechanisms of decision making in hoarding disorder.

CONTEXT: Hoarding disorder (HD), previously considered a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), has been proposed as a unique diagnostic entity in DSM-5. Current models of HD emphasize problems of decision-making, attachment to possessions, and poor insight, whereas previous neuroimaging studies have suggested abnormalities in frontal brain regions. OBJECTIVE: To examine the neural mechanisms of impaired decision making in HD in patients with well-defined primary HD compared with patients with OCD and healthy control subjects (HCs). DESIGN: We compared neural activity among patients
