The utility of Hayashi's quantification theory type 2 for the rapid assessment of the epidemiological survey in the developing countries--in a case of the vaccine coverage survey in Yunnan Province, China.

It is difficult to conduct the epidemiological survey with accurate statistical theory in the developing countries due to the problems especially emerged in the developing countries such as no availability of the accurate population data, limitation of the time for survey, geographical obstacle and financial problems. In the consideration of the health needs in those countries, results of the epidemiological survey should be reflected in the present health projects as rapidly as possible. The authors conducted the survey for the immunization coverage of oral poliomyelitis vaccine(OPV) in China…

[The reduction of mother-child transmission of HIV infection in developing countries: potential intervention strategies, obstacles to implementation and perspectives. The Reduction of Mother-Child Transmission of HIV Infection in Africa Group].

Mother to child transmission (MCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the main cause of the spread of the HIV epidemic in the pediatric population. It is estimated that to date, three million children worldwide have been infected by HIV. The epidemic burden in developing countries is dramatic. Ninety-five percent of the world's HIV-infected women are living in developing countries. In industrialized countries, antiretroviral treatment of pregnant women and newborns with azidothymidine (AZT, ACTG 076 regimen) and discouraging breast feeding by HIV-infected mothers are effectively reducing…

Cross-Country Individual Participant Analysis of 4.1 Million Singleton Births in 5 Countries with Very High Human Development Index Confirms Known Associations but Provides No Biologic Explanation for 2/3 of All Preterm Births.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the most common single cause of perinatal and infant mortality, affecting 15 million infants worldwide each year with global rates increasing. Understanding of risk factors remains poor, and preventive interventions have only limited benefit. Large differences exist in preterm birth rates across high income countries. We hypothesized that understanding the basis for these wide variations could lead to interventions that reduce preterm birth incidence in countries with high rates. We thus sought to assess the contributions of known risk factors for both spontaneous

Generation of Th1 immune responses to inactivated, gp120-depleted HIV-1 in mice with a dominant Th2 biased immune profile via immunostimulatory [correction of imunostimulatory] oligonucleotides--relevance to AIDS vaccines in developing countries.

Vaccination against HIV-1 of hosts with a dominant Th2 immune profile may fail to induce essential protective Th1 immune responses. By using Schistosoma-infected mice, with a pre-existent Th2 immune background, we demonstrate that oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) containing unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanosine (CpG) immunostimulatory sequences co-administered with inactivated, gp120-depleted HIV-1 viral particles (HIV-1 immunogen) lead to potent Th1 anti-HIV-1 immune responses overcoming the Th2 bias. In contrast, Schistosoma-infected mice immunized with HIV-1 immunogen in incomplete Freund's

Measuring health financing vulnerability due to reductions in official development assistance: A conceptual framework with empirical application across 47 African countries.

Despite a 33% increase in Official Development Assistance (ODA) from 2019 to 2023, aid declined by 7% in 2024 and projected to further decline in 2025-2027. Health systems in Africa are being impacted by the sudden aid freezes and cuts. There are no multicriteria metrics to estimate the vulnerability of countries to facilitate dialogue and decisions. This paper proposes an approach to assess country's vulnerability to external aid cuts, considering dynamic health financing and macro-fiscal risk factors. We proposed a framework using four proxy health financing and macro-fiscal factors. Using a

Second trimester quad test for fetal down syndrome screening as a predictor of spontaneous preterm birth in a developing country: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between second-trimester serum biomarkers of Quad test (comprising alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), free β-hCG, unconjugated estriol (uE3), and inhibin-A (IhA)) and spontaneous preterm birth, and to develop a predictive model based on Quad test analysis. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted using a prospectively collected database of singleton pregnancies undergoing routine Quad test screening. Serum biomarker levels were adjusted for covariates and expressed as multiples of the median. Pregnancy outcomes were followed up. Logistic regression was used to assess

Evaluation of technical and economic outcomes of contact force-sensing catheters for pulmonary vein isolation in symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in a developing country.

INTRODUCTION: Contact force (CF)-sensing catheters may improve lesion quality and procedural efficiency during pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), but data on their clinical and economic implications in developing countries remain limited. This pilot study evaluated the technical, clinical, and economic outcomes of CF catheters compared with non-CF catheters in symptomatic paroxysmal AF. METHODS: In this pilot study conducted in Vietnam, 45 patients underwent PVI. Technical outcomes included first-pass isolation (FPI), fluoroscopy time, and lesion-related p…

Management of Pediatric Humeral Supracondylar Fractures in a Referral Center From a Developing Country: A Comparison With American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Guidelines.

Introduction Supracondylar fractures are the predominant type of pediatric elbow fractures. The usual mechanism of injury is falling over the hand with the elbow extended and the hand open. The management of these fractures encompasses a range of treatment options, and their goal is to recover the anatomy and achieve a stable contact area between them. There are some controversies on the management of these injuries mainly focused on those that present some degree of displacement. A review and analysis of the current treatment at our institution and a comparison with the guidelines suggested b

Mapping development and health effects of cooking with solid fuels in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000-18: a geospatial modelling study.

BACKGROUND: More than 3 billion people do not have access to clean energy and primarily use solid fuels to cook. Use of solid fuels generates household air pollution, which was associated with more than 2 million deaths in 2019. Although local patterns in cooking vary systematically, subnational trends in use of solid fuels have yet to be comprehensively analysed. We estimated the prevalence of solid-fuel use with high spatial resolution to explore subnational inequalities, assess local progress, and assess the effects on health in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) without univers

Investigating factors affecting bus/minibus accident severity in a developing country for different subgroup datasets characterised by time, pavement, and light conditions.

Developing countries are primarily associated with poor roadway and lighting infrastructure challenges, which has a considerable effect on their traffic accident fatality rates. These rates are further increased as bus/minibus drivers indulge in risky driving, mainly during weekends when traffic and police surveillance is low to maximise profits. Although these factors have been mentioned in the literature as key indicators influencing accident severity of buses/minibuses, there is currently no study that explored the complex mechanisms underpinning the simultaneous effect of pavement and ligh…
