Destruction of elastic tissue (elastolysis) as a link between atherosclerosis and the temporal arteritis/polymyalgia rheumatica syndrome. Observations on an actinic factor in vascular disease.

Destruction (elastolysis) of the internal elastic lamina is frequently observed near early atherosclerotic plaques. Elastolysis and plaque formation are also found together in the temporal arteritis/polymyalgia rheumatica syndrome. Could it be that atherosclerosis and the syndrome are more closely akin than usually thought, with elastolysis acting as the pathogenetic link between them? A kinship of this nature is in accord with the growing recognition that elastin-related autoimmunity prevails in both these forms of vascular disease. A case can also be made out for the belief that the autoimmu

Associated factors of elastic and stiffening components of pulse pressure based on 45 517 database of 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

Pulse pressure (PP), which has been proposed to be a marker of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) in elderly, can be divided into two components: elastic PP (elPP) and stiffening PP (stPP). Thus, the aim of our study was to explore the associated factors of 24 h elPP and stPP. ABPM data of 45 517 subjects (age: 56.4 ± 14.9 years, male: 20 897 (45.9%)) were collected from the Hungarian ABPM Registry between September 2020 and August 2024. Subjects' clinical data were analyzed together with ABPM curves. elPP and stPP were calculated according to published formulas. The elPP was higher in

Association of localized circumferential elastic compression with short-term recanalization and safety during urokinase thrombolysis for lower extremity deep vein thrombosis.

Systemic urokinase infusion via the dorsal foot vein is commonly used for acute lower-extremity deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) complicated by pulmonary embolism (PE), but drug dilution within the superficial venous system may reduce local efficacy. We evaluated whether localized circumferential elastic compression applied at the thigh level was associated with improved short-term recanalization without compromising safety during urokinase thrombolysis. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 207 consecutive patients with acute proximal DVT and concomitant PE received urokinase via the dorsal

Quantum-mechanical elastic and transport cross sections for Mg+-He collisions: from ultracold sympathetic cooling to room-temperature ion mobility.

Although Mg+-He is a benchmark system for sympathetic cooling of trapped ions and for ionic mobility measurements, its collisional dynamics has never been characterized: previous studies addressed only the underlying electronic structure. We close this gap with a fully quantum-mechanical, partial-wave study of elastic and momentum-transfer collisions between ground-state Mg+(3s 2S) ions and He(1 1S) atoms, covering twelve orders of magnitude in collision energy, 10-12-10-1 a.u., for the four low-lying molecular states X 2Σ+, A 2Π, B 2Σ+ and C 2Σ+. We calculated the potential energy surfaces of

Absence of hymenal trauma does not exclude child sexual abuse: Forensic significance of a study-defined highly elastic/dilated hymenal phenotype.

BACKGROUND: The absence of detectable genital injury is a frequent source of medico-legal misunderstanding in child sexual abuse (CSA) evaluation. Reported vaginal penetration may occur without documented traumatic hymenal findings, and marked hymenal distensibility may be one factor associated with this absence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a study-defined highly elastic/dilated hymenal phenotype is associated with a lower prevalence of documented traumatic hymenal findings among girls reporting vaginal penetration. METHODS: This retrospective observational analytical study included 192 g

Retrograde Titanium Elastic Nailing for Diaphyseal Fractures of the Humerus in Children through a Single Central Entry Point: A Case Series with Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Almost all paediatric humerus fractures can be managed conservatively with a high rate of union. Surgical intervention may be indicated in a few scenarios. Retrograde nailing with titanium elastic nails through a central entry point proximal to the olecranon fossa offers several advantages when surgical fixation is indicated. CASE REPORT: Three male patients in the age group of 5-14 years with diaphyseal left humerus fractures were treated with retrograde elastic nailing after failed conservative management. The mean age of the patients was 10 years. All the surgeries were perfo

Long-term implant retention after impacted elastic stable intramedullary nailing in pediatric diaphyseal forearm fractures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) for forearm fractures, nail protrusion may cause irritation-related implant removal. The primary aim was to evaluate implant retention after nail impaction, and secondarily to assess secondary procedures, complications, and protrusion as a predictor of removal. METHODS: We analyzed a retrospective cohort of children with diaphyseal forearm fractures treated with impacted ESIN between 2017 and 2024. Implant retention was defined as no nail removal at record review. Secondary procedures were unplanned operations, while comp

Elastic tape as an add-on strategy to potentiate pulmonary rehabilitation outcomes in nonobese males with moderate-to-very severe COPD: A randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) improves exercise capacity but has limited effects on ventilatory constraints in severe COPD. Application of elastic tape (ET) is a potential adjunctive strategy that improves ventilatory efficiency, but its effects during PR remain un lear. This study investigated whether ET potentiates PR benefits on exercise capacity, health status, psychological symptoms, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals with COPD. METHODS: Forty-two nonobese men with moderate-to-very severe COPD were randomised to ET or Sham groups during an

Inter-individual differences in the utilization of elastic energy during running affect the quadriceps femoris volume in highly trained/elite distance runners.

The quadriceps femoris is larger in inferior distance runners than in superior distance runners within a cohort of competitive athletes (i.e., highly trained/elite runners). We hypothesize that distance runners who are less efficient at utilizing elastic energy during running show excessive hypertrophy of the quadriceps femoris. This study aimed to examine the relationship between thigh muscle size and indices of elastic energy utilization during running in highly trained/elite distance runners. Fifteen male distance runners (personal best time for 5000-m, 13'45″11 ± 19″91) participated. The v

Sample environment for simultaneous quasi-elastic neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy experiments demonstrated on polymer films under changing humidity and temperature.

Understanding the dynamic and structural properties of matter across different timescales and length scales is essential for elucidating their functionality. We focus here on soft-matter systems, which are typically particularly sensitive to relative humidity (RH) and temperature, necessitating well controlled experimental conditions. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and Raman spectroscopy offer complementary insights: QENS accesses diffusional dynamics, which are stochastic motions, while Raman spectroscopy provides information on periodic vibrational dynamics. To enable simultaneous Q

A Rare Case of Titanium Elastic Nail Removal 7 Years after Pediatric Femoral Shaft Fracture Using a Screw Retriever Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing is a commonly used modality for the surgical stabilization of long-bone fractures in children, with routine implant removal recommended within 6-12 months. Delayed removal beyond this timeframe is uncommon and presents unique surgical challenges. We report a rare case of titanium elastic nails (TENs) removal performed 7 years after initial fixation, highlighting the technical considerations and successful outcome. CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old female presented with discomfort in the left thigh. The patient had a history of TENs nails inserted a

Elastic stable intramedullary nails compared to locking compression plates for treating unstable distal ulnar fractures in adults: a prospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distal ulna fractures often occur in conjunction with distal radius fractures and other associated injuries. Currently, there are no satisfactory internal fixation systems available for addressing unstable distal ulna fractures, and a definitive consensus on the most effective treatment approach is still lacking. The objective of this research was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of using elastic stable intramedullary nails (ESIN) compared to locking compression plates (LCP) for treating unstable distal ulnar fractures in adults. METHODS: In a prospective clinical stu

Correlation between sagittal balance and thoracolumbar elastic energy parameters in 42 spines subject to spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis and 21 normal spines.

The curvature of the lumbar spine plays a critical role in maintaining spinal function, stability, weight distribution, and load transfer. We have developed a mathematical model of the lumbar spine curve by introducing a novel mechanism: minimization of the elastic bending energy of the spine with respect to two biomechanical parameters: dimensionless lumbosacral spinal curvature c LS and dimensionless curvature increment along the spine CI. While most of the biomechanical studies focus on a particular segment of the spine, the distinction of the presented model is that it describes the shape
