Maternal immune activation in nonhuman primates alters social attention in juvenile offspring.

BACKGROUND: Sickness during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of offspring neurodevelopmental disorders. Rodent models have played a critical role in establishing causal relationships and identifying mechanisms of altered brain and behavior development in pups prenatally exposed to maternal immune activation (MIA). We recently developed a novel nonhuman primate model to bridge the gap between human epidemiological studies and rodent models of prenatal immune challenge. Our initial results demonstrated that rhesus monkeys given the viral mimic synthetic double-stranded RNA (polyino

Diabetic retinopathy risk prediction for fundus examination using sparse learning: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major disability in diabetic patients. Although early management has shown to prevent vision loss, diabetic patients have a low rate of routine ophthalmologic examination. Hence, we developed and validated sparse learning models with the aim of identifying the risk of DR in diabetic patients. METHODS: Health records from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) V-1 were used. The prediction models for DR were constructed using data from 327 diabetic patients, and were validated internally on 163 patient

Epidemiologic and genetic aspects of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.

The worldwide incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) ranges from 1.0 to 10.0 per 1,000 births with almost equal frequencies between two major categories: anencephaly and spina bifida (SB). Epidemiological studies have provided valuable insight for (a) researchers to identify nongenetic and genetic factors contributing to etiology, (b) public health officials to design and implement policies to prevent NTD pregnancies, and (c) individuals to take precautions to reduce the chance of having an NTD-affected pregnancy. Despite extensive research, our knowledge of the genetic etiology of human NTDs

Benchmarking Generative AI Chatbots in Preventive Medicine: A Comparative Analysis of Accuracy, Completeness, and Inter-Rater Reliability.

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for healthcare information retrieval, education, and clinical support; however, concerns remain regarding the accuracy and completeness of AI-generated information in preventive medicine, where evidence-based recommendations, epidemiological interpretation, risk assessment, and public health guidance require reliable responses. Comparative evidence across multiple preventive medicine domains remains limited, particularly using standardized expert-validated reference answers. This study aimed to evaluate and comp

Shadow cost of oral corticosteroids-related adverse events: A pharmacoeconomic evaluation applied to real-life data from the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common non-communicable respiratory diseases, affecting about 6% of the general population. Severe asthma, even if afflicts a minority of asthmatics, drives the majority of costs of the disease. The aim of this study is to create a pharmacoeconomic model to predict the costs of corticosteroid-related adverse events in severe asthmatics and applying it to the first published epidemiologic data from the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry. METHODS: The analysis was conducted from the perspective of the Italian National Healthcare System (INHS). M

Obesity: a chronic relapsing progressive disease process. A position statement of the World Obesity Federation.

This paper considers the argument for obesity as a chronic relapsing disease process. Obesity is viewed from an epidemiological model, with an agent affecting the host and producing disease. Food is the primary agent, particularly foods that are high in energy density such as fat, or in sugar-sweetened beverages. An abundance of food, low physical activity and several other environmental factors interact with the genetic susceptibility of the host to produce positive energy balance. The majority of this excess energy is stored as fat in enlarged, and often more numerous fat cells, but some lip

A model to estimate the impact of changes in MMR vaccine uptake on inequalities in measles susceptibility in Scotland.

An article published in 1998 by Andrew Wakefield in The Lancet (volume 351, pages 637-641) led to concerns surrounding the safety of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, by associating it with an increased risk of autism. The paper was later retracted after multiple epidemiological studies failed to find any association, but a substantial decrease in UK vaccination rates was observed in the years following publication. This paper proposes a novel spatio-temporal Bayesian hierarchical model with accompanying software (the R package CARBayesST) to simultaneously address three key epidemiologi

Perinatal programming, renal development, and adult renal function.

Substantial data indicate that maternal diet during gestation, as well as perinatal events, affect organogenesis and, furthermore, may affect organ function at maturity, thus determining whether an individual is prone or resistant to a variety of health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or renal dysfunction. This concept is called perinatal programming, or the fetal origins of adult disease (FOAD), a concept that arose after the publication of epidemiologic observations by Barker and colleagues that birth weight among apparently normal individuals studied in midlife was in

Rift Valley fever virus dynamics in a transhumant cattle system in The Gambia.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease of global concern, driven by environmental conditions, vector activity, and livestock mobility. Although RVF has been reported in The Gambia, its epidemiology remains poorly understood. This study developed a compartmental model to study RVF dynamics in the cattle population of the country. The model incorporated seasonally dynamic transmission parameters reflecting transhumant movement and ecological differences between two distinct ecoclimatic regions: the Sahelian area and the Gambia river. Parameterised using serological data linked to househol

Nonlinear physics perspective and essential disease dynamics of EBV infections and the dynamics of EBV-associated diseases.

The Epstein-Barr virus affects more than 90% of the world population and, consequently, is a virus whose infection dynamics should not be overlooked. It can cause the disease infectious mononucleosis and comes with other virus-associated diseases and conditions ranging from certain cancers to episodes of fatigue and depression. While previous epidemiological and virological modeling studies have worked out the details of possible infection dynamics scenarios, the current study takes a different approach. Using a nonlinear physics perspective and a fairly general epidemiological model, we ident

Infectivity versus fatality of SARS-CoV-2 mutations and influenza.

OBJECTIVES: Because of the spread of the Omicron variant, many countries have experienced COVID-19 case numbers unseen since the start of the pandemic. We aimed to compare the epidemiological characteristics of Omicron with previous variants and different strains of influenza to provide context for public health responses. METHODS: We developed transmission models for SARS-CoV-2 variants and influenza, in which transmission, death, and vaccination rates were taken to be time-varying. We fit our model based on publicly available data in South Africa, the United States, and Canada. We used this

Evaluating vaccination strategies for tuberculosis in endemic and non-endemic settings.

According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from infectious disease worldwide (WHO, 2017). While there is no effective vaccine against adult pulmonary TB, more than a dozen vaccine candidates are in the clinical trial pipeline. These include both pre-exposure vaccines to prevent initial infections and post-exposure vaccines to prevent reactivation of latent disease. Many epidemiological models have been used to study TB, but most have not included a continuous age structure and the possibility of both pre- and post-exposure vaccination. Incorpora…

Intensive Circulation of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Peri-urban Sentinel Pigs near Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Despite the increased use of vaccination in several Asian countries, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) remains the most important cause of viral encephalitis in Asia in humans with an estimated 68,000 cases annually. Considered a rural disease occurring mainly in paddy-field dominated landscapes where pigs are amplifying hosts, JE may nevertheless circulate in a wider range of environment given the diversity of its potential hosts and vectors. The main objective of this study was to assess the intensity of JE transmission to pigs in a peri-urban environment in the outskirt of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We

Climate change and animal infectious diseases: a systematic review of emerging evidence.

Climate change is increasingly recognised as a major driver of infectious disease dynamics, yet its impact on animal health remains understudied compared with its impact on human populations. This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of climate variability and change on the epidemiology of animal infectious diseases, focusing on measurable changes in disease incidence, prevalence, mortality, and geographical distribution. We searched PubMed and CAB Abstracts for studies published between Jan 1, 1970, and Dec 31, 2024, and identified 33 eligible studies that that assessed associations

Achieving a "step change" in the tuberculosis epidemic through comprehensive community-wide intervention: a model-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Global progress towards reducing tuberculosis (TB) incidence and mortality has consistently lagged behind the World Health Organization targets leading to a perception that large reductions in TB burden cannot be achieved. However, several recent and historical trials suggest that intervention efforts that are comprehensive and intensive can have a substantial epidemiological impact. We aimed to quantify the potential epidemiological impact of an intensive but realistic, community-wide campaign utilizing existing tools and designed to achieve a "step change" in the TB burden. Epidemics of panic during a bioterrorist attack--a mathematical model.

A bioterrorist attacks usually cause epidemics of panic in a targeted population. We have presented epidemiologic aspect of this phenomenon as a three-component model--host, information on an attack and social network. We have proposed a mathematical model of panic and counter-measures as the function of time in a population exposed to a bioterrorist attack. The model comprises ordinary differential equations and graphically presented combinations of the equations parameters. Clinically, we have presented a model through a sequence of psychic conditions and disorders initiated by an act of bio

Integrated Genomic and Epidemiological Surveillance to Monitor SARS-CoV-2 Variants in Italy: Insights From the JN.1 Case Study (2023-2024).

The epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 is marked by the continuous emergence of new lineages. Early detection and assessment of their transmissibility can be challenging for surveillance systems that rely solely on case time series data. Genomic surveillance, focusing on identifying and characterizing circulating variants, can provide early insights into their epidemiological impact. Phylogenetic and phylodynamic methods were applied to sequence data collected between October 2023 and January 2024 to study the transmission of the JN.1 variant in Italy. The genomic surveillance encompassed two data flo

Distinct influenza interfaces in cattle: repeated spillovers of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) from wild birds and enzootic circulation of influenza D virus.

Cattle now occupy two epidemiologically distinct influenza interfaces. This Mini Review comparatively synthesizes epidemiological, pathological, experimental-transmission, genomic, and surveillance evidence for highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) and influenza D virus (IDV), asking how source ecology, tissue tropism, shedding, transmission, persistence, and zoonotic evidence differ between the two viruses. Genetically distinct H5N1 viruses have spilled over repeatedly from wild birds into United States dairy cattle. In lactating cows, infection is prominent in mammary alveolar epithelium

Aluminum and Alzheimer's disease in the 21st century: An umbrella review of evidence and controversies.

The potential role of aluminum (Al) in the onset and progression of Alzheimer disease (AD) remains among the most enduring and divisive controversies in environmental neurotoxicology. Although numerous narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, mechanistic appraisals, and toxicological assessments have been published, their conclusions remain heterogeneous and at times contradictory. The present review of reviews critically integrates the PubMed-indexed review literature published in this century (January 1, 2000, and May 2, 2026), focusing on epidemiology, exposure sources, toxicok
