We report of a pathological fracture of the middle phalanx of the little finger due to periosteal chondroma. The periosteal chondroma occupied an extensive area of the middle phalanx extending to the proximal interphalangeal joint, and the fracture involved the distal interphalangeal articular surface. The fracture was internally fixed using a strut bone grafting after resection of the chondroma. One year and four months after the operation, remodeling of the phalanx had completed without recurrence and functional loss.

We present a case of subcutaneous flexor tendon rupture of the index finger following malunion of a distal radius fracture. The cause of the tendon rupture was mechanical attrition due to a bony prominence at the palmar joint rim in the distal radius due to malunion. Corrective osteotomy and the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure were carried out for the wrist pain and forearm rotation disability and a tendon graft was carried out for the flexor tendon rupture. Recovery was satisfactory.

Traumatic dislocations and subluxations of the upper extremity in children have been surveyed. The elbow joint is most commonly dislocated and is dislocated more frequently in children than in adults. Severe neurovascular injury may be associated with dislocation of this joint. The most common subluxation is that of the radial head, secondary to a "pulled elbow." Otherwise dislocations and subluxations of the upper extremity are uncommon in children, apparently because of the relative weakness of the epiphyseal plate. Most of these injuries are the result of predictable indirect forces. Princi

Axillary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating of the armpits, which can significantly affect quality of life. A new microwave-based therapy, MiraDry (Miramar labs, Sunnyvale, Calif.), is a promising minimally-invasive treatment option. We report a case of unilateral brachial plexus thermal injury in a thin 19-year-old man treated for axillary hyperhidrosis with the MiraDry system. He initially experienced swelling and pain in the left hand and was prescribed 1 week of methylprednisolone. He then presented 1 week later with induration and swelling of bilateral axillae with swell

Many everyday tasks such as typing, grasping, and object manipulation require coordination of dynamic movement across multiple joints and digits. Playing a musical instrument is also one such task where the precise movement of multiple digits is transformed into specific sounds defined by the instrument. Through extensive practice musicians are able to produce precisely controlled movements to interact with the instrument and produce specific sequences of sounds. The present study aimed to determine what aspects of these dynamic movement patterns differ between pianists who have achieved profe

BACKGROUND: The metacarpophalangeal joint is the most commonly involved joint when rheumatoid arthritis affects the hand. Many prosthetic implants have been designed for the replacement of this joint. Although studies of these implants have shown relief of pain, they have generally demonstrated a poor range of motion, progression of ulnar drift, and bone loss, as well as failure, fracture, and dislocation of the implant.
METHODS: From December 1979 to February 1987, 151 pyrolytic carbon metacarpophalangeal implants were inserted in fifty-three patients. The implants had an articulating, uncon

The feasibility of prefabricating free flaps by inducing, through the process of staged reconstruction, an arteriovenous bundle and its surrounding fascia to perfuse a selected block of tissue was investigated experimentally and clinically. Sixteen rat knee joints were wrapped with their ipsilateral superficial inferior epigastric (SIE) fascia. In 8 joints, the composite flaps were resected en bloc and were immediately replaced orthotopically pedicled upon the superficial inferior epigastric vessels. In the remaining joints, the resection and orthotopic transfer were performed 2 weeks later. O

Human fingers are one of the most remarkable organs for handling complex tasks or manipulating unknown objects, not only due to its dexterous and powerful movement capabilities but also its rich kinematic sense at joints and tactile sensing at skins. Shape and tactile sensing are crucial for soft pneumatic fingers to achieve embodied intelligence. Reliable tactile sensing of soft pneumatic-driven robots is particularly challenging due to its large deformation and adaptability. Here, we propose a distributed local curvature sensing-based solution for simultaneous shape and tactile perceptions i

BACKGROUND: Extended soft tissue defects of the fingers-irrespective of their origin-are challenging to treat. In cases of missing amputates or crush injuries, the options are often limited to further amputation, ray resection, or free tissue transplantation. The SISAP-flap was developed to add an extra option to treat finger avulsion injuries or otherwise extended soft tissue finger defects.
METHODS: Cadaveric SISAP-flaps were individually dissected, tested for arterial perfusion using red ink and radiopaque dye, and transposed into artificially created same-size defects. After introducing t

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
INTRODUCTION: Injuries to adjacent fingers with differing extensor tendon (ET) zones and/or sagittal band pose a challenge to therapists as no treatment guidelines exist.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This report highlights how the relative motion flexion/extension (RMF/RME) concepts were combined into one orthosis to manage a zone IV ET repair (RME) and a zone III central slip repair (RMF) in adjacent fingers (Case 1); and how a single RME orthosis was adapted to limit proximal interphalangeal joint motion to manage multi-level ET zone III-IV injuries and a sagittal band

BACKGROUND: Apart from clean cut finger amputations, every kind of hand injury can be seen in mountain and winter sports but only skier's thumb and injuries of the pulley system in sport climbers are seen in a greater number of cases. Nevertheless, these two common injuries as well as the rare frostbite of the fingers are often underdiagnosed or overdiagnosed as well as undertreated or overtreated.
PURPOSE: This paper describes the diagnostics and treatment of skier's thumb, injuries of the pulley system in sport climbers and frostbite of the fingers.
RESULTS: Before checking the metacarpoph

INTRODUCTION: Within pathologic alterations that affect foot and ankle, claw toes deformity is one of the most frequent with an incidence of 20%. There are many surgical options to treat this deformity reported in literature.
OBJECTIVE: To show clinical experience of the Orthopedic Department of Hospital "Victorio de la Fuente Narváez" in lesser toes claw deformity treated with resection of the proximal interphalangic joint, as a treatment for alignment and better function.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective clinical trial, in the period between January 2001 and December 2003

A two-channel, portable, battery operated, functional electrical stimulation (FES) system with surface electrodes to enhance grasping in tetraplegics was developed and tested. This system is meant for tetraplegics capable of grasping by tenodesis. Candidates for this system must retain some wrist extension, and have paralyzed but innervated finger flexors, and nearly normal shoulder and elbow coordination within the working space. The control signal that turns the stimulation of forearm finger and thumb flexors on and off is based on the detection of the threshold of the amplified, rectified,

OBJECTIVES: Therapists generally describe a person's grasp in terms of normal prehension patterns that have been discussed in the literature. However, the grasp pattern used by a person with a hand impairment may not fit into these patterns. The purpose of this study was to describe, with qualitative classification systems, static grasp patterns used by hands impaired by scleroderma and to determine the relationship between hand impairment and variations in grasp.
METHODS: Seventeen subjects with scleroderma were observed grasping a key, a coin, a glass, and a saucepan. Their grasp patterns w

Here, we present 2 cases of a severely hypoplastic duplicated thumb classified as Wassel types 5 and 6 and discuss whole-joint implantation from a supernumerary thumb as an alternative to stabilize the hypoplastic metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. The aim of the surgical treatment of thumb polydactyly is to reconstruct a functional and aesthetically pleasing thumb. Hypoplasia of joint components and abnormal tendon alignment lead to unpleasing results with angular deformity of the reconstructed thumb. In 2 cases, the MCP joint of the dominant digit was hypoplastic and unstable in all directions

BACKGROUND: Extensor tendon injuries require surgical repair, followed by rehabilitation to ensure optimal outcomes. Immobilization has been the cornerstone of postoperative management. However, immobilization after surgery frequently makes the finger stiffness, often resulting in reduced functionality and quality of life for patients. Recent studies indicate that early controlled motion can significantly improve outcomes, but safe early range of motion (ROM) exercise is a significant clinical challenge. This article aims to check the efficacy of the novel designed finger ROM brace for prevent

A retrospective review of 22 patients who sustained snowblower injuries to the hand was performed. There were 17 men and 5 women, ranging in age from 20 to 68 years (average age, 39.7 years). Fifty percent were manual laborers, 25% were unemployed, 15% were office workers, and 10% were not categorized. The dominant hand was involved in 86% of patients. In all patients, injuries occurred during an attempt to unclog manually the snowblower of wet snow. Patients were evaluated initially in the emergency room, where their wounds were irrigated and debrided, subungual hematomas drained, and nail be

Spontaneous midsubstance ruptures of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon are rare and often overlooked because of their subtle presentation and lack of preceding trauma. These injuries most often involve the little finger. We report two cases of spontaneous midsubstance FDP rupture in otherwise healthy males who presented with loss of active distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joint flexion and benign examination findings. Magnetic resonance imaging in both cases demonstrated complete midsubstance rupture of the FDP tendon in the palm with an atrophic flexor digitorum s

Cubital tunnel syndrome refers to compression neuropathy caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve pathway around the elbow. A 63-year-old male patient visited the clinic complaining of decreased sensation and weakness in his left ring finger and little finger, stating that the symptoms first began 6 months prior. He had undergone surgery to remove a ganglion cyst from his left elbow joint about 5 years prior in Mongolia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass located at the previous surgical site, which was compressing the ulnar nerve within the cubital tunnel. Ulnar nerve decompressio
