Prevalence of anaemia and associated factors among pregnant women living in Koloji camps of Fafan Zone of Somali Region, Ethiopia, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a major global public health problem affecting pregnant women, with a prevalence of about 40-50% in Sub-Saharan Africa and significant maternal and fetal consequences. Despite interventions, it remains highly prevalent in Ethiopia with regional variation. Internally displaced pregnant women are at higher risk due to food insecurity, poor diets, and limited health services. However, evidence on anaemia in Ethiopian IDP settings is limited. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia among pregnant women in Koloji IDP camp, Somali Region

Correlates of Post-Release Overdose Among Women With Opioid Use Disorder Returning to the Community Following Jail Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates that opioid overdose risk is significantly higher during community reentry following incarceration, particularly for women. However, there is a limited understanding of factors specifically associated with women's overdose risk post-jail release. This study examines the relationship between individual risk factors, structural vulnerabilities, and nonfatal overdose during the 3 months following jail release among a sample of women with opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: Women (N = 900) in this study were randomly selected from 9 Kentucky jails, screened

Health service responses and help-seeking for women experiencing violence during outbreaks in low- and middle-income settings: A scoping review.

During outbreaks women struggle to access essential health services, including services for violence. Services may be disrupted or deprioritised, or women may avoid clinical settings. We conducted a scoping review to understand how health services for violence against women (VAW) were affected in low- and middle-income (LMIC) settings during recent outbreaks, and how women sought help following violence. We reviewed published academic literature reporting on primary research from LMIC settings during recent outbreaks (Ebola, Zika and COVID-19). Four databases were searched: Medline, Embase, Gl

"It Would be a Burden off My Back": Veterans' Perceptions of Social Risk and Needs Screening Acceptability.

BACKGROUND: Many health systems seek to identify social risks (individual-level social and economic conditions such as food insecurity, financial strain) and address needs. However, the impact of these efforts relies in part on patient acceptability of screening. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the acceptability of social risk and needs screening among Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients, including suggestions to optimize screenings. DESIGN: Qualitative study PARTICIPANTS: Veterans who endorsed ≥ 1 social risk in a national VA survey (administered March-June 2024) and agreed to a follow-u

Perceptions of and willingness to participate in genomics research among a U.S. sample.

INTRODUCTION: The proliferation of biobanks and the collection of gender identity data have created opportunities to conduct transgender identity genetic research (TIGR), which explores possible genetic contributions to gender identity. However, without meaningfully engaging trans communities, researchers may struggle to understand and prevent potential harms while maximizing potential benefits, particularly when research fails to incorporate the social, medical, and political factors and environments shaping transgender peoples' lives. This study explored factors associated with transgender i

A qualitative assessment for planning the implementation of a social needs intervention in community-based home visiting.

BackgroundSocial determinants of health (SDOH) and related social needs (e.g., food insecurity, financial strain) are major drivers of maternal health disparities. Pregnant women of color and those with low socioeconomic status (SES) experience a disproportionate burden of social needs, which are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and increased risk of chronic disease for both mothers and children. Home visiting programs represent a promising, community-based platform for identifying and addressing social needs; however, little is known about how these processes occur in practice or ho

Nutrition Outcomes and Interventions in Older People in Africa: A Systematic Umbrella and Scoping Review.

Africa's older population is rapidly increasing, necessitating the development of healthy aging interventions. Nutrition is a key component of healthy aging. Evidence synthesis on nutrition outcomes of older adults in Africa is emerging but a synthesis on interventions is lacking. The aim was to synthesize evidence from reviews on older people in Africa to determine the prevalence of nutrition outcomes and associated factors (phase 1) and implemented interventions (phase 2). Literature searches using Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, African Index Medicus, and African Journals Online were condu

Strategies to improve retention in care among people living with HIV at health facilities in Manaus, Brazil: insight from health care providers.

BACKGROUND: Retention in HIV care is a key component of the continuum of care and is essential for achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. In Manaus, Northern Brazil, despite advances in HIV treatment and prevention, loss to follow-up among PLHIV remains a significant barrier to viral suppression and epidemic control. The present research explored health care providers' perspectives on strategies to improve retention in care among people living with HIV (PLHIV) at referral health facilities in Manaus. METHODS: A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2023 and October

Cardiometabolic Status of Adults Living with HIV in Panama-Baseline Results of the Colón C3 Study.

Background. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) have become a major health concern among adults living with HIV (ALWH) as antiretroviral therapy (ART) extends life expectancy. Metabolic syndrome (MetS)-a cluster of abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypoalphalipoproteinemia-is a key predictor of CMD risk. Despite high HIV prevalence in Panama, data on MetS among ALWH are scarce. Thus, the Colón C3 Study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MetS and its criteria in a large cohort of ALWH in Colón, Panama. Methods. Between April-December 2024, 659 ALWH aged ≥18

A comparison of social drivers of health identification and intervention rates by sex among patients receiving primary care.

BACKGROUND: Social drivers of health (SDOH) significantly influence health behaviors and outcomes, yet sex-based disparities in these domains remain underexplored. Identifying these differences is essential for guiding equitable, evidence-based interventions. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health record (EHR) data from all patients with a documented male or female sex who had a primary care visit or inpatient stay at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024 (n = 493,920). SDOH screening responses were categorized as "affirmative" (at risk

Association of social determinants of health and their cumulative inequities with risk of hypertension: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a global public health challenge with significant socioeconomic disparities. While traditional risk factors are well-documented, the cumulative impact of adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) on hypertension risk warrants further investigation. METHODS: We analyzed data from 36,836 NHANES participants (2005-2018), including 15,082 hypertension cases. Eight SDoH indicators across five domains (economic stability, education, healthcare access, neighborhood environment, and social context) were evaluated using survey-weighted multivariable logistic regress

Syndemic mapping of HIV and other STIs in KwaZulu-Natal: a Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling approach using latent constructs.

Syndemics involving Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, and understanding their spatial and temporal dynamics is critical for effective interventions. Using data from two consecutive, population-based cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015 under the HIV Incidence Provincial Surveillance System (HIPSS) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, we applied a Bayesian spatio-temporal framework grounded in latent variable modeling to quantify and map the syndemic burden of HIV and other S
