We describe 2 female patients, both with a history of radical mastectomy for breast cancer, in whom several indurated erythematous plaques developed on the upper extremity affected by postmastectomy lymphedema. There were no general symptoms or leukocytosis. Histopathological examination showed a dense neutrophilic infiltrate without a feature of vasculitis in the dermis and subcutis. Dramatic therapeutic response was observed to treatment with potassium iodide. These findings resemble Sweet's syndrome, but such cases have not been previously reported. In a series of 545 consecutive contact dermatitis clinic patients, 274 (50.3%) were men, 56 (20.4%) of whom had hand dermatitis alone, 40 (71.4%) being allergic. The common sensitizers were dichromate in cement, nickel on metal gates, colophony, epoxy resins and rubber chemicals. 48 (85.7%) of the hand cases came from occupational sources. Half of the patch-test-negative men worked in wet jobs. The hands of Nigerian men appear to be less tolerant to irritant wet jobs than those of women who had the opportunity of becoming hardened from childhood.

A selected group of 142 hospital "wet" workers with hand eczema was studied. 91% were female. Atopy (58%), metal dermatitis (41%), and hand eczema prior to the current wet work (67%) were more common than in the total cohort to which these patients belonged. The incidence of hand dermatitis and contact allergies was analyzed among dental technicians. A survey was carried out by postal questionnaire. It was returned by 106 technicians (88%); 30 had had skin problems, and 20 (19%) had present eruptions. All 20 were invited to a detailed dermatological investigation, but only seven participated. In 7 patients with nickel or chromate allergy and dyshidrotic hand eczema, we observed symmetric hyperkeratotic lesions on the elbows which ran a similar course to the hand dermatitis. Histopathological examinations show findings suggestive of lichen simplex chronicus and subacute-chronic dermatitis, but exclude psoriasis. We conclude that these elbow lesions are a characteristic of systemic allergic contact dermatitis.

202 patients, 68 males and 134 females, with patch-test-negative, symmetrical vesicular hand eczema were challenged orally in a controlled study with 2.5 mg nickel, 2.5 mg chromium and 1 mg cobalt given as salts of the respective metals. Characteristically, hairdresser's dermatitis arises shortly after occupational exposure and tends to clear quickly following a change of professions. A large number of causative agents are usually found. There is a considerably higher incidence in females. The following factors play a major role in the pathogenesis of hairdresser's dermatitis alkalinity of the substances used, carelessness in handling the chemicals, mechanical trauma and constant wetting of the skin, and constitutional factors such as hyperhidrosis and dyshidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Acute pseudoperniosis (PP) has a recognized association with COVID-19 and tends to occur without cold precipitation in young, healthy patients, often without a clear history of COVID-19. These lesions usually resolve within 2 weeks and without long-term sequelae. In the early months of 2021, patients with delayed and protracted PP began to emerge. Wall and Gebauer (Contact Dermatitis 1991: 24: 241-243) first described persistent post-occupational dermatitis (PPOD) as ongoing dermatitis for which there is no obvious present cause, precipitated by prior occupational contact dermatitis (OCD). We propose that individuals exhibiting PPOD lose the capacity for resolution of their condition upon removal from exposure to causative agents and subsequently develop persistent dermatitis, which can be continual or intermittent.
