Sparganum proliferum is an enigmatic, highly proliferative cestode that causes fatal sparganosis. We present a 681 Mb chromosome-level genome assembled from Oxford Nanopore, PacBio HiFi, Illumina, and Hi-C data, yielding nine chromosome-length scaffolds consistent with 2n = 18. The assembly exhibits strong intra-chromosomal Hi-C contact signals and a repeat content of 55.8%, dominated by LINEs. We annotated 29 231 protein-coding genes, including 6316 transposable element-associated loci, with BUSCO completeness scores of 91% (eukaryota_odb10) and 73% (metazoa_odb10). Macrosynteny is well conse

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is rapidly expanding its range in Europe, driven by climate and habitat changes, human influence, and changes in competition with wolves. Its ecological flexibility enables it to thrive in various habitats, including urban areas, raising concerns about its potential role in spreading zoonotic diseases. Jackals may act as reservoirs for pathogens such as Lyme disease and babesiosis, affecting wildlife, humans, and pets. Their close genetic relationship with domestic dogs also increases the risk of hybridization and host-jumping, complicating disease dynamics. To

Reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus) play key ecological, cultural, and economical roles across Arctic and Subarctic regions. However, genome-wide patterns of genetic diversity and population structure in semi-domesticated reindeer from Norway remain insufficiently characterized. Here we generated a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly (GCA_965153185.1) for Norwegian semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). The genome spans 2.54 Gb, with a scaffold N50 of 75.6 Mb, 96.1% complete BUSCOs, and 39,855 predicted protein-coding genes. Using this reference

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a globally distributed pest insect of medical, veterinary, and economic importance. Previous reference genome assemblies for this species were generated from short-read sequencing data, resulting in a ~650 Mb composed of thousands of contigs. Here, we present a haplotype-resolved, chromosome-level reference genome, generated from an adult Harlen strain female specimen. Using PacBio long read and Omni-C proximity sequencing, we generated a 540 Mb genome with 15 chromosomes (13 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes-X1X2) with an N50 > 30 Mb and BUSCO > 90%. Pr

The Pacific banana slug, Ariolimax columbianus, is endemic to the forests of the Pacific Northern West. Found throughout the coastal foothills and mountains of California, the hermaphroditic molluscs Ariolimax spp. are niche-constrained, hyper-localized, and phenotypically diverse. The evolutionary history, recent population history and environmental conditions leading to their phenotypic and genetic variation are not understood. To facilitate such research, we present the first high-quality de novo genome assembly of A. columbianus as part of the California Conservation Genomics Project. Paci

Conservation of threatened species can benefit from an evaluation of genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), whose loci encode proteins that bind pathogens and are often under strong selection to maintain diversity in immune response to diseases. Despite this gene family's importance to disease resistance, little is known about these genes in reptiles including snakes. To address this issue, we assembled and annotated a highly contiguous genome assembly for the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus), a pit viper which is threatened or endangered in parts of its range, and analyzed

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is caused by an interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Parental consanguinity increases homozygosity in the genome of the offspring, which in turn increases disease risk. The association between parental consanguinity and psoriasis in the offspring remains unexplored. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the association of parental consanguinity and family history with psoriasis in the offspring and to determine whether sex modulates the aforementioned associations.
METHODS: A case-control study enrolled adults aged 21 years and more. Psoriasis cases (n

Wildlife diseases, such as the sea star wasting (SSW) epizootic that outbroke in the mid-2010s, appear to be associated with acute and/or chronic abiotic environmental change; dissociating the effects of different drivers can be difficult. The sunflower sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides, was the species most severely impacted during the SSW outbreak, which overlapped with periods of anomalous atmospheric and oceanographic conditions, and there is not yet a consensus on the cause(s). Genomic data may reveal underlying molecular signatures that implicate a subset of factors and, thus, clarify p

Geckos exhibit derived karyotypes without a clear distinction between macrochromosomes and microchromosomes and intriguing diversity in sex determination mechanisms. We conducted cytogenetic analyses in six species from the genera Nephrurus, Phyllurus, and Saltuarius of the gecko family Carphodactylidae. We confirmed the presence of a female heterogametic system with markedly differentiated and heteromorphic sex chromosomes in all examined species, typically with the W chromosome notably larger than the Z chromosome. One species, Nephrurus cinctus, possesses unusual multiple Z1Z1Z2Z2/Z1Z2W sex

The Tibetan partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae) is a widely distributed endemic species in high-altitude areas across the Tibetan Plateau where the hypoxia, lower temperature and high ultraviolet radiation are pivotal factors influencing survival. However, the underlying genetic adaptation of the Tibetan partridge to extreme environments remains uncertain due to limited genomic resources. Similarly, the phylogenetic position of Perdix within Phasianidae remains controversial due to lacking information. Consequently, we de novo assembled and annotated the whole genome of the Tibetan partridge. The ge

INTRODUCTION: We have reported that high total homocysteine and the coexistence of inadequate thyroid hormones in maternal serum increase the risk of fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). Placental iodothyronine deiodinases (DIOs: DIO1, DIO2, and DIO3) play a role in regulating the conversions between different forms of maternal thyroid hormones. This study hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in placental DIOs genes could be related to NTDs.
METHODS: We performed a case-control study from 2007 to 2009 that included pregnant women from Lüliang, Shanxi Province, China. Nine dis

OBJECTIVES: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complex cardiovascular disease with unknown etiology. Although nuclear genes play active roles in DCM, mitochondrial dysfunction was believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of DCM. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between mitochondrial tRNA (mt-tRNA) mutations and DCM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a mutational analysis of mt-tRNA genes in a cohort of 318 patients with DCM and 200 age- and gender-matched control subjects. To further assess their pathogenicity, phylogenetic analysis and mitochondrial functions in

INTRODUCTION: Impairment of mitochondrial function caused by pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations has been found to be associated with pre-eclampsia (PE). However, the underlying mechanism of PE remains poorly undetermined. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between mitochondrial tRNA (mt-tRNA) variants and PE.
METHODS: The mt-tRNA variants in a cohort of 100 pregnant women with PE and 100 healthy subjects were examined by PCR-Sanger sequencing. Moreover, the phylogenetic conservation analysis, mitochondrial haplogroup analysis, and pathogenicity scoring system we

OBJECTIVE: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked genetic disorder that results in impaired enzyme activity. The G6PD/6PGD ratio assay was routinely used for G6PD deficiency screening in China, but there is an apparent defect of missed diagnosis in heterozygous females. The study aims to explore the means to improve its accuracy.
METHODS: A total of 4,161 Chinese females of childbearing age were collected in this retrospective study. All samples were first subjected to G6PD/6PGD ratio assay and then screened by amplification refractory mutation system PCR (ARMS-PCR

Recent work has illuminated the bizarre sex chromosomal system of the mandarin vole, Lasiopodomys mandarinus. The ancestral sex chromosomes have been replaced by 4 neo-sex chromosomes. These sex chromosomes show non-Mendelian inheritance and epistatic sex determination, as well as unaccounted-for karyotype frequencies. I suggest a model to account for the complex observed inheritance patterns. The proposed model combines putative adaptations previously observed in rodents, including feminizing X chromosomes and Y-biased spermatogenesis, with a novel proposed mechanism of genomic imprinting of

Only the blue dun coat color, produced by the action of the dun allele on the background of a black base coat, is officially permitted in the Polish primitive horse (PPH, Konik) breed, yet the population is not visually homogenous and various coat color shades occur. Herein, the molecular background of PPH coat color was studied based on genotyping of known causative variants in equine coat color-related genes (ASIP, MC1R, TBX3, SLC36A1, SLC45A2, PMEL17, and RALY). Additionally, screening for the new polymorphisms was conducted for the ASIP gene coding sequence and the TBX3 1.6-kb insert (asso

Splashed white is a coat color pattern in horses characterized by extensive white patterning on the legs, belly, and face often accompanied by blue eyes and deafness. Three mutations in microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and two mutations in Paired Box 3 (PAX3) have been identified that explain splashed white patterns (SW1-SW5). An American Paint Horse stallion with a splashed white phenotype and blue eyes, whose parents were not white patterned, was negative for the 5 known splashed white variants and other known white spotting alleles. This novel splashed white phenotype (
