Trusting Wisely? Developmental Changes in How Children Learn and Adapt to Partner Trustworthiness.

Trusting selectively is a crucial ability in successfully navigating social environments: trusting a trustworthy partner maximizes mutual benefits; withholding trust from an untrustworthy partner minimizes chances of being exploited. Here, we ask how children's trust expectations and experienced trustworthiness inform their own trust decisions. Using a child-friendly repeated Trust Game, we employ a computational modeling approach to examine how children learn about the trustworthiness of others through experience and adjust their own trust behaviors. We tested N = 96 children ages 6-11 years

Expansive Intimacies: Celebrating the Intimacy of Asexual and Aromantic People.

This qualitative grounded theory study examined asexual graduate and undergraduate college students' experiences in and with healthy intimate relationships. Using interview and survey data from 69 participants, the study presents a new emergent conceptualization of expansive intimacies, inclusive of more than 10 types of intimacy. The expansive intimacies model moves beyond rigid, gendered, allonormative conceptions of intimacy by instead challenging narrow or limited ideas of who gets to experience intimacy and what people classify as intimacy. Viewing intimacy as the ways asexual and aromant

The Interactive Effects of Emotional Closeness, Positive Affect, and Perceived Positive Communication in Romantic Couples: A Daily Diary Study.

Research has suggested that independently and in combination, positive affect, emotional closeness, and perceived positive communication behaviors, are important to relationship satisfaction for adults in romantic relationships. The current study leveraged daily diary data from 158 individuals in cohabitating romantic couples to better understand the isolated and interactive effects of an individual's daily positive affect, emotional closeness, and perceived positive communication behaviors (verbal and nonverbal) on their daily relationship satisfaction. We expected that higher scores on each

Presence of a friend is associated with progesterone response after social exclusion.

Social exclusion is a common form of indirect aggression and carries significant social and health costs. Close friendships may protect against exclusion and shape physiological responses. While oxytocin and cortisol have received substantial attention in this context, progesterone is also implicated in affiliative motivation and may be sensitive to social threat. The present study examined progesterone responses to social exclusion and subsequent reunion with a close friend. Female participants (N = 31) provided salivary progesterone samples at baseline, following exclusion (Yale Interpersona

ADHD Symptoms, Internalizing Symptoms, and Friendship Features in Emerging Adults: The Moderating Effect of Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has revealed that individuals with ADHD exhibit difficulties in social functioning including obtaining and maintaining quality friendships. Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) symptoms and internalizing symptoms frequently co-occur with ADHD symptoms and negatively influence social functioning, yet relatively little is known about how these symptoms uniquely relate to friendship features. METHODS: The present study sought to examine associations among these variables in a large, multi-site sample of emerging adults. Participants (N = 4,756; 18-29 years; 72.7% f

Cognitive mechanisms underlying the recall of positive relationships in social networks.

Humans are embedded in complex social networks. To utilize them, they regularly need to recall with whom they are connected. This recall is cognitively demanding and utilizes a variety of heuristic cognitive mechanisms. We empirically investigate traces of these mechanisms in the context of free and repeated recall of positive social relationships (friendships, positive interactions) within an emerging undergraduate student community ([Formula: see text] participants). Applying multinomial modeling, we study the specific sequences in which individuals recalled their peers when prompted in a re

Collectivism and Suicide Risk: Reinterpreting Interpersonal Theory Constructs in Southern Belize.

BACKGROUND: Over 70% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet cultural mechanisms of suicide risk remain underexplored. Collectivism is often assumed protective, but emerging evidence from vertically collectivist settings suggests a more complex relationship. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 29 community stakeholders across health, education, religious, and social service sectors in Toledo District, southern Belize. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with deductive alignment to the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) and

Effect evaluation of the positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) positive psychological intervention model in patients with Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of positive psychological intervention based on the Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment model for patients with Parkinson's disease. METHOD: A total of 60 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups (a study group and a control group), receiving comprehensive intervention and routine nursing, respectively. Before and after the intervention, the motor function, quality of life, mental state, emotional fluctuation, and nursing satisfaction of the two groups we

Associations between implicit antagonistic narcissism and forgiveness: Insights from a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Forgiveness supports interpersonal repair and psychological well-being but relies on capacities that may be compromised in narcissistic individuals. Contemporary models allow for a more nuanced differentiation of narcissistic facets, with increasing evidence linking antagonistic narcissism to reduced forgiveness. As dual-process models propose both reflective and automatic levels of information processing, this study integrated direct (self-report) and indirect (Implicit Association Test) measures to examine associations between antagonistic narcissism and forgiveness in a clinical

Gender powers perception of "dancing circles in love".

Humans tend to attribute social characteristics to moving geometric shapes as if they were animate beings (eg, kissing each other while dancing). This ability is considered an integral component of day-to-day life and a fundamental key to navigating effective social communication. The Heider-and-Simmel (HS)-like paradigm is suitable for investigating mechanisms of social attribution across lifespans and population groups, particularly in clinical contexts. As vast majority of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders are gender-specific, the present study delves into possible gender impacts on i

Attachment Styles Predict Personal Network Structure Better Than Big Five Traits.

Research on individual differences in social network analysis has primarily focused on how personality traits influence individuals' positions and behaviors within social structures. However, attachment research has consistently shown that attachment styles strongly affect how people form and maintain their interpersonal relationships. This study examined how attachment styles relate to different types of individual personal networks. A classification of personal networks was developed based on structural indicators of cohesion, transitivity, and subgroup configuration, among other measures. D…

Daily closeness discrepancies and marital interaction quality in the context of chronic pain: mediating effect of loneliness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Feelings of closeness are key to individual and relational well-being. However, individuals may desire different degrees of relationship closeness compared to the actual closeness they feel with their partners. Such discrepancies in closeness may affect marital interaction quality, especially in the context of chronic pain. This study aimed to investigate associations of daily closeness discrepancies with same-day marital interaction quality and the potential mediating effect of same-day loneliness among older individuals with chronic back pain (ICBPs; N = 147) and t

Interpersonal neural coordination tracks interaction quality during naturalistic conversation.

Conversations can feel effortlessly engaging or, conversely, difficult and unrewarding. Multiple factors contribute to the experienced quality and outcomes of a conversation, among them how interlocutors align with each other. The present study investigated speech-to-speech, brain-to-speech, and brain-to-brain coordination as markers of interpersonal alignment, examining their relationship with jointly perceived interaction quality and mutual affinity between conversational partners. Pairs of previously unacquainted participants (dyads) engaged in multiple short, free-form conversations on top

Sexual and Romantic Relationships in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Preliminary Report of an Italian Psychosexual Training Program.

The existing literature highlights the importance of psychosexual education for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We developed a group training program on sexuality and affectivity, specifically designed for adolescents with ASD, with the aim of investigating changes in psychosexual functioning after the intervention and evaluating its clinical utility. The program, consisting of 10 sessions and conducted by two expert clinicians, was administered to three small groups (maximum six participants per group), for a total of 17 adolescents (aged 12-18) diagnosed with ASD without int

Attachment Behavior Change Following Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial With Spanish-Speaking Couples.

This study evaluated changes in attachment behaviors among Spanish-speaking couples participating in emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT), using data from a randomized clinical trial of EFCT in this population. The study examined perceived secure attachment behaviors -accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement- measured by the Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement (BARE) scale, and their association with dyadic adjustment measured by the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Seventy couples were randomly assigned to EFCT or a waiting list; two withdrew before beginning the inter

Resistance or Cooperation? Actor and Partner Effects of Hostile and Benevolent Sexism on Observed Behavior in Couples' Interactions.

Hostile sexism evokes women's resistance necessitating benevolent sexism to promote cross-gender cooperation. Addressing inconsistent, primarily self-report evidence for ambivalent sexism theory principles, we test the actor and partner effects of sexist attitudes on behaviors exhibited within heterosexual couples' interactions (N = 855 dyadic interactions). Showing that men's hostile sexism likely incites resistance, men's hostile sexism predicted more hostile and less responsive behavior by men and their women partners. Providing new behavioral evidence that benevolent sexism may promote het

Despite all our rage: An autoethnographic analysis on the role of shared affect in dementia caregiving relationships.

Using an autoethnographic approach, this paper explores the phenomenon of shared rage between Alzheimer's patients and their informal family caregivers. Unlike previous analyses regarding dementia care, this work understands that rage within caregiving relationships is both dynamic and productive. Drawing broadly from social scientific studies regarding emotional labour and "feeling work," this work argues that Alzheimer's sufferers and their informal caregivers form two halves of a dyad, each of whom may use rage as a form of protection against loss of relational identity and pursuant grief,

Malicious, Uncertain, or Benign? Associations Between Intentions and Unwanted Pursuit Behaviors Following Relationship Dissolution.

Prior research indicates that many young adults pursue former partners after their relationships end, and a growing scholarship has examined potential motives for pursuit by studying correlates of pursuit behaviors (e.g., prior violence, rumination, breakup distress, possessiveness/control). However, few studies have directly assessed pursuers' self-reported motives and whether motives are associated with the frequency of pursuit behaviors. Among a sample of undergraduate students who pursued their former partners (n = 654), results of the present study indicated that, while most pursuers repo

Transformative Moral Repair Following Interpersonal Transgressions: Post-Transgression Relationship Growth.

Research often views relationship repair through a reparative lens of relationship partners attempting to fix what was damaged or broken by the transgression. We argue here for a transformative lens to view transgressions as potential catalysts for the strengthening of relationships or what we term: post-transgression relationship growth (PTRG). However, we also argue that PTRG is more likely achieved when the transgression is dealt with dyadically via a constructive process of co-reflection. Results from a pilot study and two pre-registered three-wave longitudinal studies provided validation

The mediating role of rumination between boredom proneness and life satisfaction in married couples: a dyadic study.

Married couples invariably impact one another during their shared time. Prolonged interactions may influence their perceptions of one another. This study sought to investigate the mediating effect of rumination on the relationship between boredom proneness and life satisfaction among married couples. A total of 529 married couples (n = 1058) participated in the study, which employed the Brief Boredom Proneness Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Rumination Scale on Interpersonal Errors. Data were gathered via online questionnaires and analyzed employing the Actor-Dependency Mediat
