Quantification of head motion in children during various fMRI language tasks.

PURPOSE: Head motion during functional MRI scanning can lead to signal artifact, a problem often more severe with children. However, the documentation for the characteristics of head motion in children during various language functional tasks is very limited in the current literature. This report characterizes head motion in children during fMRI as a function of age, sex, and task. METHODS: Head motion during four different fMRI language tasks was investigated in a group of 323 healthy children between the age of 5 and 18 years. A repeated measures ANOVA analysis was used to study the impact …

Web-based resources for sun protection information--a French-language evaluation.

BACKGROUND: With the dramatic increase in ultraviolet-induced skin damage, advocating the benefits of reasonable and moderate exposure to sunlight is a public health priority in most Western countries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the nature and quality of the information posted on the Internet about the effects of the sun on health and about sun protection. METHODS: We used eight terms with eight search engines to identify relevant websites providing sun protection advice on the French-speaking web. This information was compared to the recommendations issued by nine o

Oropharyngeal dysphagia and language delay in partial trisomy 9p: case report.

The phenotype of partial trisomy 9p includes global developmental delay, microcephaly, bulbous nose, downturned oral commissures, malformed ears, hypotonia, and severe cognitive and language disorders. We present a case report and a comparative review of clinical findings on this condition, focusing on speech-language development, cognitive abilities and swallowing evaluation. We suggest that oropharyngeal dysphagia should be further investigated, considering that pulmonary and nutritional disorders affect the survival and quality of life of the patient. As far as we know, this is the first st…

Early speech- and language-impaired children: linguistic, literacy, and social outcomes.

The aim of this study was to follow-up prospectively a cohort of preschool children originally recruited from successive referrals to speech and language therapy community clinics and to investigate their linguistic, literacy, and social outcomes at 7 to 10 years of age. Three hundred and fifty children aged 84 to 113 months (mean age 99.9mo [SD 5.4mo]) were singletons from monolingual backgrounds where there was concern about their speech and language development. Children who had severe learning difficulties, autism, oromotor deficits, dysfluency, or dysphonia were excluded. Altogether 196 (…

Magnetoencephalography identifies rapid temporal processing deficit in autism and language impairment.

Deficient rapid temporal processing may contribute to impaired language development by interfering with the processing of brief acoustic transitions crucial for speech perception. Using magnetoencephalography, evoked neural activity (M50, M100) to two 40 ms tones passively presented in rapid succession was recorded in 10 neurologically normal adults and 40 8-17-year-olds with autism, specific language impairment, Asperger syndrome or typical development. While 80% of study participants with intact language (Asperger syndrome, typical development, adults) showed identifiable responses to the se…

The stability of primary language disorder: four years after kindergarten diagnosis.

The rates of change in the language status of children with language impairment unaccompanied by other developmental or sensory disorders (primary language disorder) were studied in a longitudinal sample of 196 children who were followed from kindergarten through 4th grade. Previous studies have shown that children with such language impairments have moderate rates of improvement during this age range. Also, those with the most specific deficits have the greatest likelihood of improvement. Cole and colleagues have hypothesized that such results could be due to the effect of regression to the m…

Neural resources for processing language and environmental sounds: evidence from aphasia.

Although aphasia is often characterized as a selective impairment in language function, left hemisphere lesions may cause impairments in semantic processing of auditory information, not only in verbal but also in nonverbal domains. We assessed the 'online' relationship between verbal and nonverbal auditory processing by examining the ability of 30 left hemisphere-damaged aphasic patients to match environmental sounds and linguistic phrases to corresponding pictures. The verbal and nonverbal task components were matched carefully through a norming study; 21 age-matched controls and five right h…

Crossing diagnostic borders: herpes encephalitis complicated by cultural and language barriers.

BACKGROUND: The patient who complains of vague mental status changes requires extra vigilance in that the underlying condition might itself affect the patient's ability to communicate well and relate a medical history. The differential diagnosis of delirium is broad, ranging from the benign to the potentially fatal. The diagnostic uncertainty inherent in primary care is compounded when language and cultural differences interfere with physician-patient communication. METHODS: We undertook a MEDLINE-assisted review of the medical literature concerning herpes simplex encephalitis. Additionally, …

Reading comprehension: a language intervention target from early childhood through adolescence.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in helping children and adolescents with language impairments to construct meaning from spoken and written language. They work in collaboration with other professionals and families to provide the optimal learning experiences and to introduce strategies for seeking meaning and monitoring understanding. This article describes language intervention techniques to enhance reading comprehension, including the development and enhancement of background knowledge and schemata, vocabulary, knowledge of text structure, and strategy use. The disc…

College students with dyslexia: persistent linguistic deficits and foreign language learning.

The first of these two studies compared college students with dyslexia enrolled in modified Latin and Spanish classes and non-dyslexic students enrolled in regular foreign language classes on measures of foreign language aptitude, word decoding, spelling, phonological awareness and word repetition. The groups did not differ on age or grade point average. Analyses indicated that students with dyslexia performed significantly poorer on the foreign language aptitude measures as well as on both phonological tasks, reading and spelling. In the second study, students with learning disabilities who w…

Determination of language dominance: Wada test confirms functional transcranial Doppler sonography.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of the invasive Wada test in determining language dominance, and to validate the functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD) examination in patients. BACKGROUND: Previous work shows that simultaneous bilateral fTDC may identify cognitive hemispheric dominance in healthy individuals. METHOD: fTDC and the Wada test were performed prospectively in 14 patients with various diseases (tumors, cerebrovascular events, head injury, intractable epilepsy). fTDC hemispheric dominance was determined based on the hemispheric blood flow velocity shift for language…

Discourse processes underlying social competence in children with language learning disabilities.

Children with both a language impairment and a learning disability are at risk for poor social competence. Yet the processes that place these children at risk remain unclear. A developmental-organizational perspective was used to explore processes underlying risk for poor social competence among language learning disable children. To this end, the relative influences of language learning disability and social discourse skills on social competence were examined in 50 language learning disabled (LLD) and 50 control (non-LLD) children aged 8-12 years. Findings indicated that social discourse skil…

Hearing, language, speech, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by congenital anomalies traditionally associated with hearing disorders. The present study sought to (a) evaluate possible central hearing loss; (b) verify and extend previous observations on sensorineural and conductive hearing losses; (c) evaluate possible vestibular disorders; (d) examine the relationships between hearing, speech, language, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in FAS patients; and (e) evaluate the influence of patient age, race, and gender on the expression of these morbidities. A biracial group of 22 FAS patients (aged 3 to 26…

Language development deficits and early interactive music intervention (BusyBaby): protocol description of a double-blind randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of music on language development in infancy.

BACKGROUND: Infancy and early childhood lay the foundation for language and reading abilities. They are crucial for success in social relationships, education, and work life, but can be compromised by heritable conditions such as developmental dyslexia. Music activities have shown associations with auditory, language, and literacy skills, but randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been lacking, especially in young and at-risk populations. This two-arm RCT evaluates the efficacy of an early music intervention for language development. As highly novel aspects, we investigate whether and how th…

Expert Consensus on the Role of Speech-Language Pathologists in Working With Deaf Children Who Use American Sign Language in the United States: A Classical e-Delphi Study.

PURPOSE: Although approximately 40% of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regularly serve Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students, at present, there are no agreed-upon standards specifying the minimum qualifications and best practices for working with this population, especially those who use signed language. The goal of the present study is to establish expert consensus on recommended clinical training and practice for SLPs working with signing DHH children. METHOD: Experts in fields related to speech-language pathology and deaf education (N = 30, 16 DHH) participated in three …

A language-model approach to species distribution reveals alternative stable states.

Ecological communities are reorganizing rapidly under accelerating global change, yet predicting how species assemble, persist, or collapse remains a major challenge.1,2,3,4 Most species distribution models treat species as independent entities, overlooking the dependencies that structure ecological communities. Here, we introduce a language-model-inspired approach5,6 to species distribution that generates ecological communities sequentially, predicting each species and its biomass conditional on previously assembled species. Trained on ∼27,000 reef fish surveys,7 the generative framework reve…
