The vision loss in the Traumatic Optic Neuropathy is the impact of deformational forces. This occurs due to direct or indirect injuries during trauma to skull. The use of high dose corticosteroids is the primary line of treatment in such injuries still remains a matter of debate. Traumatic Optic Neuropathy is yet an unexplored topic of study in Ayurveda. The Traumatic Optic Neuropathy can be correlated with Abhighatajanya Vataprakopaj Drishtinash. The treatment principles of Vataprakopaj Vyadhi are Snehan (massage), Swedan (sudation), Basti (enema) and Nasya (oleation through nasal route). A 5

Frontal sinus fractures require a large amount of force and often occur in the context of a major trauma. Many patients with these fractures are assessed in an emergent setting where stabilization takes precedence. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of a sinus fracture can result in life-threatening conditions, such as a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. A number of different treatment algorithms have been proposed, highlighting the complexity of frontal sinus fracture management. The goal of this study is to determine how patients with frontal sinus fractures were treated at Texas Tech University

INTRODUCTION: Urogenital system injuries (UGIs) are seen in 10% of adult cases with multiple trauma. Although UGIs are rarely life threatening, they can cause major long-term morbidities. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of traumatic UGIs in patients who were referred to emergency department following multiple traumas.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on multiple trauma patients who were presented to emergency department during a 10-year period (2008-2017). All patients with kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, or external genitalia injuries were st

PURPOSE: To determine the mechanisms of injury associated with occupational injuries (OI) to genitourinary (GU) organs and compare GU OIs with GU non-OIs.
METHODS: A single institution, retrospective study was conducted at a level 1 trauma center between 2010 and 2016 of all patients with GU injuries. OI was defined as any traumatic event that occurred in the workplace requiring hospital admission. Types of occupations were recorded in addition to the location of injury, mechanisms of injury, concomitant injuries, operative interventions, total cost, and mortality. GU OI patients were then co

Knee dislocation with concomitant multiligament injury is a rare and devastating injury. We report the successful repair of a rare case of open knee dislocation with concomitant multiligament injury and patellar tendon rupture of an 18-year-old male due to a motorcycle accident. The patient presented with an open wound running parallel to the knee joint line and patellar tendon rupture with full exposure of the cartilage of the distal femur. Staged surgical management including the application of a ring-type external fixator with a hinged joint, lateral collateral ligament repair, medial colla

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is an important risk factor for road transport injuries. We aimed to determine if raising alcohol taxes would be a cost-effective intervention strategy for reducing this burden.
METHODS: We modelled the effect of a one-off increase in alcohol excise tax (NZ$0.15 (US$0.10)/standard drink) on alcohol consumption in New Zealand, using price elasticities to determine change in on-trade and off-trade sales of beer, cider, wine, spirits and ready-to-drink products. We simulated change in alcohol-attributable motor vehicle and motorcycle injuries, by age, sex and ethnicity, over

BACKGROUND: Atlantoaxial dislocation usually results from hyperextension trauma and is almost always accompanied by odontoid fracture and neurological symptoms. In most cases, patients with atlantoaxial dislocation die instantly. This is a rare report of posterior atlantoaxial dislocation without fracture and neurological symptoms effectively treated by transoral-posterior approach surgery, and only eleven similar cases have been previously reported.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the very rare case of an adult posterior atlantoaxial dislocation patient without fracture who was neurologically treated

OBJECTIVE: To present the results and conclusions of our study on surgical treatment for unstable pelvic fractures in children subjected to surgical reduction and stabilisation.
METHODS: We analysed the cases of fourteen skeletally immature patients with unstable pelvic fractures who underwent surgery for this condition between March 2004 and January 2011. The surgical technique used was based on the principle of surgical reduction and stabilisation of anterior and posterior lesions of the pelvic ring. This was a retrospective study, based on clinical assessment and X-ray analyses.

We report a rare case of blunt trauma of the axillary artery in a 20-year-old man who was injured as a motorcycle rider and received severe body injuries. Injuries included severe trauma of the left lower leg with contusion and extensive soft tissue and bone trauma of these regions with poor general condition and with the presence of clinical signs of traumatic shock. Upon arrival, we found that in addition to earlier clearly visible trauma to the leg, there was a hematoma of the medial side of the left supraclavicular region and the absence of the radial artery pulse with paralysis of the lef

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Restoration of elbow extension has not been considered of much importance regarding functional outcomes in brachial plexus surgery; however, the flexion of the elbow joint is only fully effective if the motion can be stabilized, what can be achieved solely if the triceps brachii is coactivated. To present a novel nerve transfer of a healthy motor fascicle from the ulnar nerve to the nerve of the long head of the triceps to restore the elbow extension function in brachial plexus injuries involving the upper and middle trunks.

Injuries of the spine in pregnant women are rare. Unstable fractures, incomplete neurological deficits and failed conservative treatment are indications for operative stabilization. So far, only posterior stabilization techniques performed during pregnancy have been published in case reports. This Grand Round case presentation describes a 24-year-old woman in the 19th week of gestation who was involved in a motorcycle accident as a pillion rider. Radiological examination revealed a complete burst fracture (type AO A3.3) of T8 with a slight, yet clinical unapparent narrowing of the spinal canal

OBJECTIVES: Upper extremity reconstruction presents a functional and aesthetic challenge in plastic surgery. Exposure of vital structures often requires vascularized soft tissue coverage to achieve primary wound healing and optimize functional results. Specifically, the serratus fascial flap may satisfy the functional and cosmetic requirements for small- to medium-sized soft tissue defects of the upper extremity with limited donor site morbidity. We describe our technique of serratus fascial flap harvest, using the Harmonic SYNERGY curved blade (Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Cincinnati, Ohio).
