The autonomic nervous system, adipose tissue plasticity, and energy balance.

In most mammals, two types of adipose tissue, white and brown, are present. Both are able to store energy in the form of triacylglycerols and to hydrolyze them into free fatty acids and glycerol. Whereas white adipose tissue can provide lipids as substrates for other tissues according to the needs of the organism, brown adipose tissue will use fatty acids for heat production. Over the long term, white fat mass reflects the net balance between energy expenditure and energy intake. Even though these two parameters are highly variable during the life of an individual, most adult subjects remain r

Motion sickness occurrence does not correlate with nystagmus characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis whereby eye movements as such may be an important factor in the development of motion sickness (MS). The horizontal eye movements of 27 subjects were measured during earth vertical axis rotation (EVAR) and during off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Two groups were set up, one including subjects who suffered severe MS during the test, and the other including subjects with no MS symptoms. We found no differences in nystagmus parameters (EVAR: gain and time constant; OVAR: eye velocity modulation and eye position modulation) between the MS and t

Dopamine modulates carotid nerve responses induced by acetylcholine on the cat petrosal ganglion in vitro.

We have recently reported that application of acetylcholine (ACh) or nicotine to the petrosal ganglion-the sensory ganglion of the glossopharyngeal nerve-elicits a burst of discharges in the carotid nerve branch, innervating the carotid body and sinus, but not in the glossopharyngeal branch, innervating the tongue and pharynx. Thus, the perikarya of sensory neurons for the carotid bifurcation exhibit selective cholinosensitivity. Since dopamine (DA) modulates carotid nerve chemosensory activity, we searched for the presence of DA sensitivity at the perikarya of these neurons in the cat petrosa

Organisation of reciprocal connections between trigeminal and vestibular nuclei in the rat.

In order to study the connection patterns between the sensory trigeminal and the vestibular nuclei (VN), injections of anterogradely and/or retrogradely transported neuronal tracers were made in the rat. Trigeminal injections resulted in anterogradely labelled fibres, with an ipsilateral preponderance, within the VN: in the ventrolateral part of the inferior nucleus (IVN), in the lateral part of the medial nucleus (MVN), in the lateral nucleus (LVN) with a higher density in its ventral half, and in the superior nucleus (SVN), more in the periphery than in the central part. Moderate trigeminal

Disconnected mutants show disruption to the central projections of proprioceptive neurons in Drosophila melanogaster.

We used a P[GAL4] enhancer-trap line, C161, in conjunction with the UAS-lacZ reporter construct to visualize the central projections of a defined set of thoracic and abdominal sensory neurons in a disconnected (disco) mutant background. The results show defects in the organization of sensory axons in the larval and adult central nervous system. The defects are indicative of problems with axon growth and development and include (a) poor axon fasciculation, (b) aberrant axon growth, (c) excessive terminal branching, and (d) ectopic innervation. Sensory neuron identity appears to be normal. The d

First one in, last one out: the role of gabaergic transmission in generation and degeneration.

This paper is the result of discussions between scientists working in widely separated areas, united by an interest in the hippocampus. The discussions focused on the possible role of GABA in the development and maturation of the hippocampus and in neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). GABA neurons are among the first to differentiate in the hippocampus and the properties of GABA neurotransmission in the developing hippocampus are distinct from those in the adult. GABAergic transmission may play a role in the clustering and maturation of GABA receptors, as well as of receptors for oth

The temporolimbic system theory of paranoid schizophrenia.

The hippocampus serves as a funnel for heavily processed sensory information that has converged at the entorhinal cortex. Lesions of the hippocampus do not alter incoming sensory or motor information but, rather, alter their integration with our baggage of emotional experiences and social values. According to Bogerts, such a lesion would be ideally situated to result in laboriously processed sensory information that is out of context to our outside environment. In this regard, Bogerts describes the pathological findings of a patient with a gross delusional disorder. The salient finding at auto

Evoked potential testing.

Electrophysiologic tests of the sacral neuromuscular system and its suprasegmental control may be divided into EMG and methods involving stimulation (i.e., evoked potential and sacral reflex testing). The latter group of methods tests the function of defined parts of the motor or sensory nervous system, or reflex arcs. There already is ample experience with testing the somatic sensory pathways (pudendal SEP) and the (somatic) sacral reflex arc, whereas other methods (testing the motor system and tests involving visceral afferents and sympathetic efferents) need further study to establish their

Activation and entrainment mapping defines the tricuspid annulus as the anterior barrier in typical atrial flutter.

BACKGROUND: The importance of anatomic barriers in the atrial flutter reentry circuit has been well demonstrated in canine models. It has been shown previously that the crista terminalis and its continuation as the eustachian ridge form a posterior barrier. In this study we tested the hypothesis that the tricuspid annulus forms the continuous anterior barrier to the flutter circuit. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen patients with typical atrial flutter were studied. A 20-pole halo catheter was situated around the tricuspid annulus. A mapping catheter was used for activation and entrainment mappin

Neural information transferred from the putamen to the globus pallidus during learned movement in the monkey.

1. We studied the physiology of the neuronal projection from the striatum to the external and internal segments of the globus pallidus (GPe and GPi, respectively) in macaque monkeys. The objective of the study was to answer the following specific questions. 1) Which classes of the electrophysiologically identified striate neurons project to GPe and GPi? 2) What kind of information is transferred from the striatum to GPe and GPi during learned movement? 3) What are the physiological actions of striate projection neurons on target neurons in GPe and GPi? 4) What is the spatial pattern of the str

Vagal preganglionic neurons innervating the different gastric regions in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

The cytoarchitecture and distribution patterns of the vagal preganglionic neurons within the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMNX) innervating the proventriculus and the gizzard of the Japanese quail were examined by Nissl staining and the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. A 30% solution of HRP was injected into nine different gastric regions: the ventral and dorsal parts of the proventriculus, the caudodorsal and cranioventral thick muscles, the craniodorsal and caudoventral thin muscles, and the pylorus, and the ventral and dorsal tendons of the gizzard. Nissl preparations showed

The Simon effect and attention deficits in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome and Huntington's disease.

Tourette's syndrome and Huntington's disease have long been clinically associated with attentional deficits. In this study, we aimed to determine the nature and quantify the extent of such deficits. A technique was devised to ascertain the efficiency with which Tourette's syndrome and Huntington's disease patients could shift and direct attention away from naturally expected stimulus-response (S-R) linkages. This was done by varying the relationships formed between stimulus and response location. Attentional efficiency was indicated by relative speed of responding to relevant (congruent) and i

Neurobiology of Rett syndrome.

From a neurobiologic perspective, Rett syndrome appears to disrupt the growth of axonodendritic connections among neurons. The cell packing density within the grey matter is increased but the total number of neurons is relatively normal, except for selected neuronal populations such as the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) and the substantia nigra. Neurochemical assays of postmortem brain from patients with Rett syndrome patients demonstrate reductions in choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), the acetylcholine synthetic enzyme localized in NBM nerve terminals. In an animal model, early postnatal in

Organization of projections from the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus: a Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin study in the rat.

The organization of projections from the four parts of the ventromedial nucleus (VMH) and a ventrolaterally adjacent region tentatively identified as the tuberal nucleus (TU) have been analyzed with small injections of the anterograde axonal tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHA-L). Extrinsic and intranuclear projections of each part of the VMH display clear quantitative differences, whereas the overall patterns of outputs are qualitatively similar. Overall, the VMH establishes massive intrahypothalamic terminal fields in other parts of the medial zone, tending to avoid the periventri

Effect on food intake and body weight of lesions in and adjacent to the posterodorsal amygdala in rats.

Bilateral lesions centered in the posterodorsal amygdala of female rats resulted in hyperphagia and excessive weight gain. The brain damage extended posteriorly through the amygdalohippocampal area and into the ventral hippocampus and subiculum. Lesions centered in the ventral hippocampal formation had a less pronounced, although still significant, effect on body weight. Damage to large areas of the amygdala, including the anterior, basolateral, and corticomedial groups of nuclei, was without effect. A serial reconstruction of overlapping areas of destruction for both effective and ineffective

[Involvement of the basal ganglia in obsessive compulsive disorder: a review].

This article reviews the main clinical indicators linking the basal nuclei to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Various pathologies associated with lesions of the basal nuclei are examined, followed by a review of neuropharmacological, brain imaging and psychosurgical studies. Once the role of the neostriatum in ritualistic behaviours has been clarified, the symptoms of OCD are interpreted based on the hypothesis of a lesion of the striato-orbito-frontal loop.

Geometry of the projection of the visual field onto the superior colliculus of the wallaby (Macropus eugenii). II. Stability of the projection after prolonged rearing with rotational squint.

At about the time of eye opening, one eye of seven tammar wallaby pouch young was surgically rotated about the optic axis by approximately 90 degrees. In adulthood the projection of the visual field through the rotated eye onto the contralateral superior colliculus was mapped electrophysiologically. Although apparently distorted, the projection could be coherently re-rotated mathematically to a reasonable copy of the normal projection from the opposite eye of the same animal, including details such as regional variations of the magnification factor. The same was true of three adult animals in

Cortico-cortical connections and cytoarchitectonics of the primate vestibular cortex: a study in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

The cortical connections of two vestibular fields [parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) and area 3aV] were studied in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) by means of retrograde tracer techniques. Small iontophoretic or pressure injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), wheat-germ-HRP, Nuclear Yellow, and Fast Blue were administered to the cytoarchitectonic areas Ri (PIVC), 3aV, the parieto-temporal association area T3, the granular insula (Ig), and the rostral part of area 7 (7ant). The injection sites were physiologically characterized by means of microelectrode recordings and vestib
