Neural control of the lower urinary tract.

This article summarizes anatomical, neurophysiological, pharmacological, and brain imaging studies in humans and animals that have provided insights into the neural circuitry and neurotransmitter mechanisms controlling the lower urinary tract. The functions of the lower urinary tract to store and periodically eliminate urine are regulated by a complex neural control system in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral autonomic ganglia that coordinates the activity of smooth and striated muscles of the bladder and urethral outlet. The neural control of micturition is organized as a hierarchical sy

The beta-adrenergic blocking agents and the treatment of glaucoma.

The autonomic nervous system is divided into the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, with three types of adrenergic receptors: alpha (smooth muscle contraction), beta1 (cardiac acceleration and fatty acid mobilization) and beta2 (smooth muscle relaxation). Substances affecting the function of the adrenergic system are the agonists or stimulators, which mimic the effects of endogenous norepinephrine or epinephrine, and antagonists or blockers, which block the receptors and prevent stimulation by the agonists. Autonomic stimulation in the eye mediates various changes which apparently affect

Nitric oxide nerves in the uterus are parasympathetic, sensory, and contain neuropeptides.

Nitric oxide (NO) is synthesized in neurons and is a potent relaxor of vascular and nonvascular smooth muscle. The uterus contains abundant NO-synthesizing nerves which could be autonomic and/or sensory. This study was undertaken to determine: 1) the source(s) of NO-synthesizing nerves in the rat uterus and 2) what other neuropeptides or transmitter markers might coexist with NO in these nerves. Retrograde axonal tracing, utilizing Fluorogold injected into the uterine cervix, was employed for identifying sources of uterine-projecting neurons. NO-synthesizing nerves were visualized by staining

Imaging of the islet neural network.

The islets of Langerhans receive signals from the circulation and nerves to modulate hormone secretion in response to physiological cues. Although the rich islet innervation has been documented in the literature dating as far back as Paul Langerhans' discovery of islets in the pancreas, it remains a challenging task for researchers to acquire detailed islet innervation patterns in health and disease due to the dispersed nature of the islet neurovascular network. In this article, we discuss the recent development of 3-dimensional (3D) islet neurohistology, in which transparent pancreatic specim

Neurophysiological responses to music and vibroacoustic stimuli in Rett syndrome.

People with Rett syndrome (RTT) have severe communicative difficulties. They have as well an immature brainstem that implies dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Music plays an important role in their life, is often used as a motivating tool in a variety of situations and activities, and caregivers are often clear about people with RTTs favourites. The aim of this study was to investigate physiological and emotional responses related to six different musical stimuli in people with RTT. The study included 29 participants with RTT who were referred to the Swedish Rett Center for medical

Heart rate variability: prognostic implications.

HRV offers information about sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic function and thus can serve as a measure of risk stratification for serious cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. HRV appears to be altered in patients with acute myocardial infarction or diabetic neuropathy and is affected by other physiologic and pathophysiologic processes. Use of HRV measurements requires continued investigation to determine optimal methods and tools by which HRV indices and its variables are analyzed. Long-term studies are required to help correct for differences in values pertaining to age and

Inflammation-Associated Co-morbidity Between Depression and Cardiovascular Disease.

Morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is exceedingly high worldwide. Depressive illness is a serious psychiatric illness that afflicts a significant portion of the world population. Epidemiological studies have confirmed the high co-morbidity between these two disease entities. The co-morbidity is bidirectional and the mechanisms responsible for it are complex and multifaceted. In addition to genetic, biological systems, psychosocial, and behavioral factors that are involved include the central and autonomic nervous systems, the neuroendocrine, immune, and the vascular and he

Aerobic Cycling Exercise Training Does Not Improve Impaired Vagal Reactivation in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

PURPOSE: Parasympathetic reactivation is essential for the rapid decrease in heart rate following exercise and delayed heart rate recovery (HRR) post-exercise is linked to poor clinical outcomes. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with autonomic dysfunction including reduced parasympathetic activity. Exercise training may improve parasympathetic reactivation. Therefore, this study aimed to test whether CKD patients experience delayed HRR due to impaired vagal reactivation and if 12 wk of aerobic exercise can improve HRR. METHODS: Twenty-seven CKD patients (stages III and IV, estimated

Variation in coupling across neural and cardiac systems of regulation is linked to markers of anxiety risk in preschool.

Both cortical and parasympathetic systems are believed to regulate emotional arousal in the service of healthy development. Systemic coordination, or coupling, between putative regulatory functions begins in early childhood. Yet the degree of coupling between cortical and parasympathetic systems in young children remains unclear, particularly in relation to the development of typical or atypical emotion function. We tested whether cortical (ERN) and parasympathetic (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]) markers of regulation were coupled during cognitive challenge in preschoolers (N = 121). We f

Heart rate-based indices to detect parasympathetic hyperactivity in functionally overreached athletes. A meta-analysis.

Investigations into the sensitivity of heart rate-(HR) derived indices for tracking parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) changes in functionally overreached (F-OR) endurance-trained athletes have produced equivocal findings. Lack of clarity may be a result of methodological inconsistencies. Therefore, the aims of this systematic review and meta-analysis were (a) to determine the sensitivity of resting and post-exercise vagal-related HR variability (HRV) and HR recovery (HRR) indices to detect PNS modulation in F-OR and non-overreached (non-OR) athletes, and (b) to investigate the influence of …

The Role of Heart Rate Variability in Mindfulness-Based Pain Relief.

Mindfulness meditation is a self-regulatory practice premised on sustaining nonreactive awareness of arising sensory events that reliably reduces pain. Yet, the specific analgesic mechanisms supporting mindfulness have not been comprehensively disentangled from the potential nonspecific factors supporting this technique. Increased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity is associated with pain relief corresponding to a number of cognitive manipulations. However, the relationship between the PNS and mindfulness-based pain attenuation remains unknown. The primary objective of the present s…

Increased night duty loading of physicians caused elevated blood pressure and sympathetic tones in a dose-dependent manner.

PURPOSE: Night duty has been recognized as a significantly harmful stressor for physicians. However, the relationship between various levels of duty loading and stress response is unknown. This study examined whether duty load increases cardiovascular stress indicators in a dose-dependent manner. METHODS: An unallocated prospective observational study was conducted among physicians performing various levels of duties in a secondary referral medical center between 2011 and 2012. Heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure (BP), and other stress markers of 12 attending physicians were compared

Acute colonic pseudoobstruction in a child with sickle cell disease treated with neostigmine.

Sickle cell disease is a disorder that produces significant morbidity and mortality. Vaso-occlusive pain crises are the most common presenting symptom associated with sickle cell patients. A rare, yet important to recognize, complication of sickle cell disease is acute colonic pseudoobstruction, also known as Ogilvie's syndrome. These patients may present with symptoms that are difficult to distinguish from other etiologies of abdominal pain, but a thorough diagnostic workup can provide important clues. Furthermore, there is no agreement on optimal treatment of pseudoobstruction. We report the

Functional characterization of atrial electrograms in sinus rhythm delineates sites of parasympathetic innervation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to characterize left atrial (LA) sinus rhythm electrogram (EGM) patterns and their relationship to parasympathetic responses during atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. BACKGROUND: The mechanistic basis of fractionated LA EGMs in patients with paroxysmal AF is not well understood. METHODS: We analyzed 1,662 LA ablation sites from 30 patients who underwent catheter ablation for paroxysmal AF. Pre-ablation EGM characteristics (number of deflections, amplitude, and duration) were measured in sinus rhythm. Parasympathetic responses during radiofrequency application (i

alpha-latrotoxin is a potent inducer of neurotransmitter release in Torpedo electric organ--functional and morphological characterization.

In this report we show that alpha-latrotoxin from black widow spider venom is a potent activator of neurotransmitter release in synaptosomes from the Torpedo electric organ. Binding of the purified toxin (5 nM) to the synaptosomal fraction occurs already at 4 degrees C and is dependent on the presence of divalent ions. However, neurotransmitter release commences only after temperature elevation (22 degrees C) and is completed within 2 min. The effect of alpha-latrotoxin on release is achieved at 1 nM and is already saturated at 5 nM. The release is stimulated by the presence of Ca2+ ions. Acti

Cholinergic and opioid involvement in release of growth hormone during exercise and recovery.

Cholinergic and opioid pathways have been implicated as mediators of the increased growth hormone (GH) release observed during exercise. This study compared the GH responses induced by a moderate-intensity exercise bout during treatment with placebo (Plac), the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone (Nalt), the indirect cholinergic agonist pyridostigmine (PD), or a combination of the two drugs (P + N). Ten active males served as subjects (age, 25.1 +/- 0.6 yr; wt, 79.7 +/- 2.5 kg; % body fat, 14.9 +/- 1.4; peak oxygen consumption, 46.2 +/- 2.7 ml.kg-1 x min-1). Blood samples were drawn at 5-min

Acute amitriptyline effects on parasympathetic-evoked rat saliva.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the acute effects of amitriptyline on salivary secretion evoked by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic innervations of rat salivary glands. Single intravenous injections of amitriptyline (0.1-1 mg/kg) caused a dose-related decrease in flow and Na concentration of saliva from both parotid and submandibular glands. However, the only effect on K concentration was a slight increase when the salivary flow was almost completely inhibited. Amitriptyline increased the Ca concentration of nerve-evoked submandibular saliva, but had no effect on t

Effect of some new H2-receptor antagonists on gastrointestinal motility.

Some new histamine H2-receptor antagonists were tested for their effects on gastrointestinal motility. Ranitidine was found to possess definite stimulatory effects which appeared to be connected with an interference with the cholinergic system and occurred, though in different degree, from the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to the colon. Etintidine, on the contrary, showed a remarkable antimuscarinic effect on the LES of the rat and the guinea-pig. Cimetidine, SK&F 93479 and tiotidine were virtually ineffective whereas oxmetidine exerted a consistent inhibitory activity on both basal motilit
