The fine-structure constant as a scaled quantity.

The fine-structure constant α≈1/137 is traditionally regarded as a fundamental dimensionless parameter. I argue instead that α is a scaled quantity that arises only where the structural scales contributed by classical electromagnetism (e), quantum mechanics (ħ), and special relativity (c) intersect. None of these theories, taken individually, supplies the independent scales required to define α. The constant first appears when relativistic corrections are added to the Schrödinger-Bohr description of hydrogen (Sommerfeld), and it becomes the structural coupling in quantum electrodynamics, where

Tool-mediated patienthood: structural plurality in oncology, surgery, and palliative care.

Patient-centered care (PCC) is widely endorsed in contemporary medicine, yet philosophical analyses often approach it through concept-first approaches that define patienthood in advance-typically in terms of autonomy, holistic personhood, or rational agency-and then assess clinical practice by reference to these ideals. This paper argues that such an approach can obscure how patienthood is configured in practice. We develop a tool-first approach that treats cognitive, communicative, and material tools as analytically primary for understanding how patients are individuated in clinical reasoning

Typing Physics: The essential role of typists in intra-scientific communication.

I present an analysis of the changes to intra-scientific communication in postwar American physics. In particular, I focus on a case study of the technical typists who worked for the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journals, especially the Physical Review (PR), c. 1962-1977. I argue PR became a trading zone amidst the page-charge crisis, and analyze the networks of physicists, typists, editors, and copy-editors that emerged to resolve this threat to community-level objectivity. Challenging the picture of typist as "automaton", I identify the skills and technical knowledge needed to perform

Ontological deskilling: clinical expertise and the changing disease object in precision medicine.

Concerns about physician deskilling in AI-enabled medicine usually ask how automated systems substitute for, attenuate, or distort clinical capacities. This article argues that precision medicine introduces a distinct object-side problem. Its dominant classificatory operation is not simply finer nosological classification but stratification for action: patients are grouped and regrouped for treatment selection, risk allocation, surveillance, trial eligibility, and prediction. In doing so, precision medicine fragments established disease categories, connects conditions across former boundaries,

Extending Explanatory Relevance.

Several authors (Kvanvig, 2003; Elgin, 2017; Dellsén, 2020) claim that there is a mode of objectual understanding whereby an agent understands a phenomenon, field, or subject matter without any explanation. A key set of cases for which it has been argued that there can be no explanations while they can be understood objectually concern the contrasting behaviours of indeterministic systems: If mutually exclusive behaviours of such a system are equally probable, neither behaviour can be explained (Kvanvig, 2003). Following Hitchcock (1999), Khalifa (2013) objects that explanatory factors need to

Epistemic injustice in plain sight evidence from medical data.

Recent debates on epistemic injustice in healthcare stress both the need for clearer criteria and measurement (Nielsen et al. 2025) and the importance of methodological pluralism (Færge et al. 2026). I argue that, in some domains, epistemic injustice can already be inferred from existing medical data, without waiting for new standardized metrics. Focusing on women's diagnostic delay, I argue that well-documented patterns - such as delayed diagnosis, symptom misattribution, and prolonged patient intervals - provide evidence of underlying epistemic injustice. The analysis distinguishes three dim

Biobanks, the 'diagnostic misconception' and the distinction between altruism and reciprocity.

In this paper, we revisit the topic of genetic biobanks and the ethical issues surrounding them. Focusing on the centrality of altruism to their conception, design and governance, we explore the ways in which the idea of participation as a "free gift" has served to define and constrain the terms of discussion around the ethics of biobanks. Discussing empirical evidence of widespread expectations for personal health information, often framed as a "diagnostic misconception", we highlight the ways in which the concept is frequently employed to protect a particular moral economy of research in whi

Benefit assessment of anti-ageing medicines in the European Union: regulatory obstacles and pluralistic alternatives.

Anti-ageing medicine is a new movement in healthcare that has as a focus the development of anti-ageing drugs. These medications, like any novel technological product, must be regulated, demonstrating safety and efficacy. In the European Union, the standard of proof for this purpose is the methodology known as randomised controlled trials, which creates a regulatory environment where such pharmaceuticals face an obstacle related to the resources needed to complete the studies. This situation leads to undesirable consequences related to prolonged wait times, the discouragement of research, and

Studying asphyxiation in the lab: the role of experimental evidence in cause-of-death inquiry.

Like most scientific and medical disciplines, forensic medicine employs evidence from experimental studies. Yet, unlike most disciplines, forensic medicine is primarily interested in the post-hoc evaluation of individual causal claims. How does experimental work that is performed under laboratory conditions bear on the assessment of field cases? We argue that experimental studies in forensic medicine help identify or exclude potential causes of death. Potential causes will not explain why an individual died. Yet they can be important to rebut claims to the impossibility of a certain course of

Historical contingency and counterfactual history: Revisiting the Cushing thesis.

James Cushing's Quantum Mechanics: Historical Contingency and the Copenhagen Hegemony published in 1994 is one of the most widely cited, but least studied, counterfactual histories of science in recent times. In this paper, I subject the scenario proposed in that book to careful examination and show that neither Cushing's simple reordering of events in the crucial years around 1926-7, nor his claims about what would have followed are convincing. While I agree that contingency played a critical role in the "the spread of Copenhagen hegemony and the exclusion of a causal theory", it is, ironical

Eudynamic bioethics.

A woman's chronic pain is controlled to a stable score, yet her sleep, her work, her singing, and her partnership have narrowed around her condition. Each clinical decision was defensible; what failed is the existential composition around them. This article proposes eudynamia as the concept bioethics lacks: the distributed activity through which possibilities are composed across the conditions of a life so that securing one does not foreclose the others. Ernst Daniel August Bartels coined Eudynamie in § 55 of his Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Pathologie (1819) for a physiological capacity working a

On epistemic risks in research method validation.

Justin Biddle and Quill Kukla's taxonomy of epistemic risk maps the theoretical terrain in ways that can assist researchers balance the cost of various types of errors. Based on a case study of method validation in toxicology, I argue that research method validation involves what I call "method mischaracterization risk." I show that this risk fits into Biddle and Kukla's taxonomy but is distinct from any previously identified risk (e.g., inductive risk). I also draw from the case study to illustrate that research method validation is vulnerable to a particular social-epistemic dilemma known as

Epistemic disadvantage and therapeutic asymmetry in psychiatric care.

In a recent commentary, Alcalay argues that the concept of epistemic disadvantage provides a useful framework for understanding forms of epistemic harm that may arise even in the absence of epistemic injustice. We agree that this concept identifies an important category of harms associated with warranted asymmetries of expertise and offers valuable insights into both clinical and nosological practices. However, we suggest that, in some clinical situations, clinicians may intentionally maintain interpretative distance from a patient's explicit narrative while fully recognizing its sincerity, me

Creative judgments in scientific discovery: Lessons from early electrophysiology.

This paper develops a heuristic framework for understanding creative scientific judgment and demonstrates it through electrophysiology's development from the late 18th to early 20th century. I identify four patterns through which creative judgments manifest in scientific discovery: disruptive discovery, gap identification and boundary probing, technique-mediated discovery, and conceptual reframing. Drawing on Sánchez-Dorado's (2023) analysis, I argue that these creative judgments are characterised by 'pursuitworthiness'-their recognised potential to yield epistemic benefits if further explored

Orchestrating politics with auxiliary motives. Otto Neurath on democracy.

Otto Neurath's views on democracy, part of the largely forgotten political legacy of logical empiricism, emerged from his early theoretical reflections on human decision-making in terms of "auxiliary motives." After further refinement during his engagement with Austromarxism and the Vienna Circle, it was only in his final years in Britain that Neurath articulated an explicitly democratic perspective, combining auxiliary motives with the idea of "orchestrating" politics within a framework of "scientific humanism." This perspective remains strikingly relevant today, as it allows us to conceive o

Measurement in the Ultimatum and Dictator Games: Construct validity, standardization and the problem of coordination.

The ultimatum game (UG) and the dictator game (DG) are two of the most prominent tools in experimental and behavioural social sciences. Originally designed to study bargaining behaviour and decision-making in economics, these simple yet versatile scripts have come to be viewed by many as reliable instruments for measuring prosocial preferences, such as altruism, generosity, or sensitivity to social norms. Proponents of the measurement view have argued that the UG and DG serve as standardized "social thermometers," capable of revealing cultural and contextual differences in normative behaviour

New visual culture of science: analysis of graphical abstracts in the life science journal "Cell".

Driven by the shift towards online journal publishing, many academic journals have introduced graphical abstracts (GAs) since the 2000s to convey the primary findings of research papers. This study investigated this visual culture in life sciences by analyzing GAs with focus on content, representation, and background. In total, 333 GAs were collected from articles published in the journal Cell in 2021 and analyzed. Among these, 295 GAs (88.6%) explained the results and models and succinctly presented the key findings, and 251 GAs (75.4%) used a layout that divided the area into two or more sec

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis: discovery and understanding of a novel disease.

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) or "brain-eating amoeba disease" is a relatively rare but typically fatal infectious disease of increasing global concern. Discovery of PAM and that Naegleria fowleri is the causative agent responsible are frequently credited to a paper published by the Australian pathologists Malcolm Fowler and Rodney F. Carter in 1965. It was significant as confirmation of an earlier suspicion that free-living, non-parasitic amoebae may be opportunistic pathogens of the human central nervous system. Like many discoveries, however, the historical details are rather mo

Unresolved ethical questions of mHealth apps for Alzheimer's disease prevention.

In recent years, medical research has sparked hope that up to a third of dementia cases could be prevented. This optimism is driven by a shift in the understanding of dementia and, in particular, Alzheimer's Disease (AD)-from being a rapid-onset brain disease in later life to a condition strongly linked to lifestyle factors, progressing slowly and gradually through asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic, and symptomatic stages with varying degrees of severity. Accompanying this evolving perception, the use of mobile healthcare applications (mHealth apps) based on dementia prevention research has been o

A normativity mapping review on end-of-life care in long-term care institutions by authors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

This article presents the findings of a "normativity mapping review" designed to make visible the breadth of normative understandings at work within interdisciplinary scholarship on end-of-life care in long-term care institutions. The scope of the literature was limited to peer-reviewed articles authored by scholars affiliated with institutions in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Terms and slogans associated with the hospice movement were used as keywords to search for literature in both German and English. During data analysis, values, frameworks, and actions were systematically extracted f
