Cysticercosis, an infection with the larva of Taenia solium, is caused by the accidental ingestion of the parasite's eggs. In many countries of the Third World, cysticercosis, and especially neurocysticercosis, is a widespread problem. A patient from Northern Malawi presented not only with cysticercosis but also with BT leprosy and pityriasis versicolor. Dermatologists should be familiar with the clinical picture of cysticercosis in order to make an early diagnosis in patients from at-risk areas.

Oral ketoconazole was given to 50 patients, 36 with superficial and 14 with deep-seated mycoses. Satisfactory results were obtained in dermatophytoses, pityriasis versicolor, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Paracoccidioidomycosis also responded well to ketoconazole therapy. The authors' experience in patients with histoplasmosis and aspergillosis does not make it possible to express a firm view on the efficacy of the drug. Ketoconazole is not the recommended drug for treatment of sporotrichosis.

BACKGROUND: The Malassezia genus includes mainly lipophilic yeasts belonging to the cutaneous microbiota of man and other mammals. Some Mala … Twenty-nine Malassezia sympodialis strains produced phospholipase; the isolates from patients with pityriasis versicolor had significantly higher phospholipasic activity than those isolated from healthy individuals. This observation suggests that the phospholipasic activity of Malassezia may play a role in the onset of skin lesions, especially in the case o …

Tryptophan is a precursor for many biologically active secondary metabolites. We have investigated the origin of indole pigments first described in the pityriasis versicolor-associated fungus Malassezia furfur. Some of the identified indole pigments have properties potentially explaining characteristics of the disease. As M. furfur is not amenable to genetic manipulation, we used Ustilago maydis to investigate the pathway leading to pigment production from tryptophan. We show by high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis that the compounds…

Today is known that genus Malassezia includes seven species: M. furfur, M. sympodialis, M. obtusa, M. globosa, M. restricta, M. sloofflae and M. pachydermatis, but role of each of the species in the pathogenesis of disease has not been elucidated yet, so further laboratory isolation and identification are necessary. We report the first case of isolation of Malassezia globosa in Serbia (Belgrade), in a patient suffering from Pityriasis versicolor. Identification of M. globosa was based on macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Isolation was done on Leeming and Notman medium a…

Erythroderma is a dermatological emergency presenting with generalized erythema and scaling involving >90% of the body surface.1 There are various causes of erythroderma, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, phytophotodermatitis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, pemphigus foliaceus, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and drug eruptions.2 However, erythroderma induced by dermatophytosis is encountered rarely. We, here, describe a case of erythroderma developed secondary to extensive dermatophytosis.

A 83-year-old patient had been treated for pityriasis rubra pilaris with 70 mg etretinate daily. He developed acute renal impairment, with creatinine levels reaching 73 mg/l on day 7. After discontinuation of etretinate, all biological changes were reversible. Although renal impairment is not considered as retinoid side effect, the chronology of renal changes is very suggestive of etretinate responsibility.

Besides dermatophytoses, a broad range of cutaneous infections due to yeasts and moulds may occur in subtropical and tropical countries where they can affect travellers. Not to be forgotten are endemic occurring dimorphic or biphasic fungi in countries with hot climate, which cause systemic and secondary cutaneous infections in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent people. In the tropics, the prevalence of pityriasis versicolor, caused by the lipophilic yeast Malassezia spp., is about 30-40 %, in distinct areas even 50 %. Increased hyperhidrosis under tropical conditions and simultaneously humi…

Many studies now indicate an association between the lipophilic dimorphic yeast Pityrosporon ovale and dandruff. Propylene glycol has been proved effective in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor, Pityrosporon folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. The patients in this study found treatment with a combination of propylene glycol, ethanol, and water, used with a shampoo, to be effective, easy to use, and cosmetically attractive. No side effects were observed by the patients.

Terbinafine (Lamisil) is the newest compound within a class of antimycotic drugs called allylamines. It is active against a broad range of dermatophytes and yeasts and exerts its fungicidal action by inhibiting squalene epoxidation during sterol synthesis in fungal membranes. Effective therapy (complete cure or mycological cure with minimal signs and symptoms) has been observed in 70-90% of 1200 patients treated topically with 1% cream for tinea corporis/cruris, tinea pedis, cutaneous candidiasis and pityriasis versicolor. Cure in patients treated systemically (125 mg b.i.d. orally) has been d…

A maculo-hypochromic condition is not rarely seen in brown-skinned adolescents and young adults, that may spread over the skin of the trunk, specially the lumbar, sacral and epigastric regions assuming a considerable psychologic important. It is generally confused with pityriasis versicolor or its hypochromic sequelae. The histologic and genetic study of the condition remains undone. It is provisionally considered among genodermatoses and the name cutis trunci variata is being proposed for it.

Progressive macular hypomelanosis of the trunk is a disease of unknown origin that often goes unrecognized in the clinical setting. We present an adolescent with this condition initially diagnosed as tinea versicolor. She was asymptomatic, with hypopigmented macules located on the trunk and with no previous history of inflammation, infection or injury. Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a common disorder that has frequently been misdiagnosed, probably because it is often considered a post-inflammatory hypopigmentation or pityriasis versicolor.

Fungal skin infections are becoming more common, and primary care physicians must be familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. Dermatophyte infections including tinea pedis, corporis and cruris; pityriasis versicolor; and cutaneous candidiasis are the focus of this article. Common presentations of these disorders, the differential diagnosis, and current treatments are stressed. With the newer agents, shorter treatment courses can be used, and oral therapy for widespread, resistant, or recurrent infections is discussed.
