A systematic review and experimental study of micro/nanoplastic-induced endocrine disruption in rodents: Potential links to autism spectrum disorder.

Recent research shows that microplastic (diameter < 5 mm) and nanoplastic (diameter < 1 μm) exposures can have endocrine-disrupting effects and lead to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-like behaviours in rodent models. We combine both a (i) systematic literature review and (ii) experimental study to synthesize the potential mechanisms underlying the link between micro-/nanoplastic (MNP) exposure and ASD, focusing on endocrine disruption and articles utilizing rodent models. First, we identify and discuss trends in the literature, outline research gaps, and suggest future directions. Most article

Bartonella tracing in wild rodents in northwestern Mexico.

Bartonella is a widely distributed Gram-negative bacterium that includes species that are capable of causing illness in humans. Rodents represent one of the main reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, and monitoring their populations can provide valuable insights into human health. We conducted a surveillance study of rodents from two north-western states of Mexico (Baja California and Chihuahua) to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing of the citrate synthase (gltA) gene. A total of 586 rodents belonging to 28

First report of Hepatozoon and Lankesterella spp. infections in wild rodents from Pakistan, and their potential impact on blood parameters and oxidative stress markers in vital organs.

Pakistan is home to a rich rodent fauna, yet no investigations have been conducted on the presence of Haemogregarines in these animals, leaving their epidemiology and genetic diversity in this subtropical region unexplored. In this study, blood samples from four wild rodent species, Rattus (R.) rattus (n = 122), Mus (M.) musculus (n = 64), Rattus norvegicus (n = 57), and Dryomys nitedula (n = 1), were collected between May 2022 and July 2023 from three districts in Punjab and three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PCR targeting a fragment of 600 base pairs from the 18 S rDNA gene revealed a 2.86% (7/244

Astroglial Dysfunctions in Mood Disorders and Rodent Stress Models: Consequences on Behavior and Potential as Treatment Target.

Astrocyte dysfunctions have been consistently observed in patients affected with depression and other psychiatric illnesses. Although over the years our understanding of these changes, their origin, and their consequences on behavior and neuronal function has deepened, many aspects of the role of astroglial dysfunction in major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remain unknown. In this review, we summarize the known astroglial dysfunctions associated with MDD and PTSD, highlight the impact of chronic stress on specific astroglial functions, and how astroglial d

Altered neuronal group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptor- and endoplasmic reticulum-mediated Ca2+ signaling in two rodent models of Alzheimer's disease.

Calcium mobilization from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) induced by, for example, IP3 receptor (IP3R) stimulation, and its subsequent crosstalk with extracellular Ca2+ influx mediated through voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) and neuronal store-operated calcium entry (nSOCE), is essential for normal neuronal signaling and cellular homeostasis. However, several studies suggest that chronic calcium dysregulation may play a key role in the onset and/or progression of neurodegenerative conditions, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, using early postnatal hippocampal tissue from two t

Investigation of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Yunnan Semi-fine Wool Sheep (Ovis aries) and wild Rodents in Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii, a globally distributed zoonotic obligate intracellular parasite, infects a wide array of mammals, including humans, sheep, and birds. As a unique sheep breed in southwestern China, Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep occupies an important position in animal husbandry in Zhaotong due to its strong adaptability, high reproductive rate, and excellent wool quality. Lambs infected with T. gondii are prone to neurological symptoms and growth retardation, while T. gondii infection in ewes can cause abortions, stillbirths, and deformities, thus affecting sheep reproduction and s

Three Decades of Valproate: A Current Model for Studying Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with increased prevalence and incidence in recent decades. Its etiology remains largely unclear, but it seems to involve a strong genetic component and environmental factors that, in turn, induce epigenetic changes during embryonic and postnatal brain development. In recent decades, clinical studies have shown that inutero exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a commonly prescribed antiepileptic drug, is an environmental factor associated with an increased risk of ASD. Subsequently, prenatal VPA exposure in rodents has been established

Scientific issues with rodent models of neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorders.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes severe inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS), primarily affecting the optic nerves, spinal cord, and brainstem. Aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G antibodies (AQP4-IgG) are a diagnostic marker of the disease and play a significant role in its pathogenesis, though the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood. To develop rodent models that best simulate the in vivo pathological and physiological processes of NMOSD, researchers have been continuously exploring how to establish the ideal model. In thi

Infection with mpox virus via the genital mucosae increases shedding and transmission in the multimammate rat (Mastomys natalensis).

The 2022 mpox virus (MPXV) outbreak was sustained by human-to-human transmission; however, it is currently unclear which factors lead to sustained transmission of MPXV. Here we present Mastomys natalensis as a model for MPXV transmission after intraperitoneal, rectal, vaginal, aerosol and transdermal inoculation with an early 2022 human outbreak isolate (Clade IIb). Virus shedding and tissue replication were route dependent and occurred in the presence of self-resolving localized skin, lung, reproductive tract or rectal lesions. Mucosal inoculation via the rectal, vaginal and aerosol routes le

Distribution and abundance of fleas and rodents of plague importance in the erstwhile endemic states and international seaports of India.

Rodents are the reservoirs of the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is transmitted through the bites of infected fleas. In this paper, we studied the distribution and abundance of fleas and rodents in the erstwhile endemic states and seaports of India from 2009 to 2019. The analysis showed that the Rattus rattus (Rr) was the major rodent species found in both Western (66.52 %) and Eastern (48.95 %) seaports of India and the other rodent species recorded were Bandicota indica (Bi) (16.68 % & 34.24 %), Bandicota bengalensis (Bb) (8.88 % & 16.02 %) Rattus norvegicus (Rn) (6.83 % & 0.70 %),

Molecular investigation of Blastocystis sp. infections in wild rodents from the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region and Liaoning province, China: High prevalence and dominance of ST4.

Wild rodents are key carriers of various human pathogens, including Blastocystis spp. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Blastocystis among wild rodents in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region and Liaoning Province of China. From November 2023 to February 2024, 486 rodents were captured in these regions. Fresh feces were collected from the intestines of each rodent for the isolation of DNA and PCR amplification of the vertebrate cytochrome b (cytb) gene to identify rodent species. Subsequently, PCR analysis and sequencing of the partial small subunit of th

Small mammals as carriers of zoonotic bacteria on pig and cattle farms - Prevalence and risk of exposure in an integrative approach.

To prevent foodborne infections from pigs and cattle, the whole food chain must act to minimize the contamination of products, including biosecurity measures which prevent infections via feed and the environment in production farms. Rodents and other small mammals can be reservoirs of and key vectors for transmitting zoonotic bacteria and viruses to farm animals, through direct contact but more often through environmental contamination. In line with One Health concept, we integrated results from a sampling study of small mammals in farm environments and data from a capture-recapture experiment

Rodent models for dry eye syndrome: Standardization using benzalkonium chloride and scopolamine hydrobromide.

Dry eye disease is a highly prevalent ocular condition that significantly affects the quality of life and presents a major challenge in ophthalmology. Animal models play a crucial role in investigating the pathophysiology and developing effective treatments. The goal of this study was to compare and standardize two dry eye disease rodent models and explore their recovery aspects. We have standardized benzalkonium chloride and scopolamine-induced dry eye disease models which represents two different classes of the dry eye i.e., evaporative dry eye and aqueous deficient dry eye, respectively. Exploiting a rodent cell block for intrinsic resistance to HIV-1 gene expression in human T cells.

Unlike humans, mice are unable to support HIV-1 infection. This is due, in part, to a constellation of defined minor, species-specific differences in conserved host proteins needed for viral gene expression. Here, we used precision CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to engineer a "mousified" version of one such host protein, cyclin T1 (CCNT1), in human T cells. CCNT1 is essential for efficient HIV-1 transcription, making it an intriguing target for gene-based inactivation of virus replication. We show that isogenic cell lines engineered to encode CCNT1 bearing a single mouse-informed amino acid change (

Estimation of Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC) on In Vivo Biofilm on Orthopedic Implants in a Rodent Femoral Infection Model.

The formation of a biofilm on the implant surface is a major cause of intractable implant-associated infection. To investigate the antibiotic concentration needed to eradicate the bacteria inside a biofilm, the minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) has been used, mostly against in vitro biofilms on plastic surfaces. To produce a more clinically relevant environment, an MBEC assay against biofilms on stainless-steel implants formed in a rat femoral infection model was developed. The rats were implanted with stainless steel screws contaminated by two Staphylococcus aureus strains (UAM

Analgesia and Humane Endpoints for Rodents in Sepsis Research.

Numerous regulatory bodies around the world require analgesics for rodents undergoing surgery to induce sepsis. Well-controlled pain will decrease morbidity. Options for analgesics include NSAIDs, local analgesics, and opioids. Supportive care can also decrease stress to post-operative animals. As well, humane endpoints should be agreed upon before the study commences so as to alleviate unnecessary pain and distress.

Epidemiological Significance of Toxoplasma Gondii Infections in Wild Rodents: 2009-2020.

Toxoplasma gondii infections are common in humans and animals worldwide. Rodents are one of the most important intermediate hosts for T. gondii because they are preyed on by cats, who in turn excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts in their feces and thus spread the infection. Information on T. gondii infections is spread in numerous reports and is not easily accessible to readers. Here, we review prevalence, persistence of infection, clinical disease, epidemiology, and genetic diversity of T. gondii infections in wild rodents worldwide. Data are tabulated by country, by each rodent spec

A metagenomic glimpse into the gut of wild and domestic animals: Quantification of antimicrobial resistance and more.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria is a complex subject, why one need to look at this phenomenon from a wider and holistic perspective. The extensive use of the same antimicrobial classes in human and veterinary medicine as well as horticulture is one of the main drivers for the AMR selection. Here, we applied shotgun metagenomics to investigate the AMR epidemiology in several animal species including farm animals, which are often exposed to antimicrobial treatment opposed to an unique set of wild animals that seems not to be subjected to antimicrobial pressure. The comparison of the d

Review of Intraperitoneal Injection of Sodium Pentobarbital as a Method of Euthanasia in Laboratory Rodents.

Euthanasia is one of the most commonly performed procedures in biomedical research, involving tens of millions of animals in North America and Europe every year. The use of sodium pentobarbital, injected intraperitoneally, for killing rodents is described as an acceptable technique by the AVMA and CCAC euthanasia guidelines. This drug and route are recommended over inhalant anesthetics, carbon dioxide, and physical methods for ethical and aesthetic reasons as well as efficiency. However, a growing body of evidence challenges the efficacy and utility of intraperitoneal pentobarbital. This metho
