Altered resting-state functional connectivity of the default mode and central executive networks following cognitive processing therapy for PTSD.

Psychotherapy research is increasingly targeting both psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of therapeutic change. This trend is evident in and applicable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment research given the high nonresponse rate of individuals with PTSD who undergo cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Functional connectivity analyses investigating disrupted brain networks across mental disorders have been employed to understand both mental disorder symptoms and therapeutic mechanisms. However, few studies have examined pre-post CBT brain changes in PTSD using functional

Computerised memory specificity training (c-MeST) for the treatment of major depression: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Major depression is a prevalent and debilitating disorder, but many sufferers do not receive support or respond to current treatments. The development of easily accessible and low-intensity treatments that have clear cognitive mechanisms of change is indicated. Memory specificity training (MeST) is an intervention for depression that targets deficits in recalling detailed memories of past experiences through repeated practice of autobiographical memory retrieval. This randomised controlled trial will assess the efficacy of an online, computerised version of MeST (c-MeST). METHOD

Latent classes of trait affect and cognitive affective regulation strategies are associated with depression, non-suicidal self-injury, and well-being.

BACKGROUND: The present study sought to better understand the unique profiles of late adolescents' affective functioning by exploring patterns of trait affect and cognitive affective regulation strategies. The study also examined whether these unique profiles significantly predicted depressive symptoms, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and well-being outcomes. METHODS: Data from a sample of 590 late adolescents were examined (M = 19.14 years, SD = 1.41, 63% Female, 62% Caucasian, 38% African American/Biracial). Participants were followed for an average of 14 months (SD = 2.53) and completed m

Experiential Avoidance and Bordering Psychological Constructs as Predictors of the Onset, Relapse and Maintenance of Anxiety Disorders: One or Many?

To investigate (a) the incremental predictive validity of experiential avoidance over and above bordering psychological constructs (i.e., rumination, worry, neuroticism and anxiety sensitivity) in predicting onset, relapse and maintenance of anxiety disorders; and (b) whether these related constructs can be represented by a single, higher-order latent factor with similar predictive power as the separate psychological constructs while offering a more parsimonious predictive model. Longitudinal cohort study with repeated assessments after 4 years in a sample of 2157 adults aged 18-65, consisting

Psychometric Properties of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Given that Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is associated with problems in emotion regulation, the importance of assessing this construct is widely acknowledged by clinical psychologists and pain specialists. Although the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) is a self-report measure used worldwide, there are no data on its psychometric properties in patients with FMS. This study analyzed the dimensionality, reliability, and validity of the CERQ in a sample of 231 patients with FMS. Given that "fibrofog" is one of the most disabling FMS symptoms, in the present study, items in the CERQ

Self-reported mindfulness and cortisol during a Shamatha meditation retreat.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive perseverations that include worry and rumination over past or future events may prolong cortisol release, which in turn may contribute to predisease pathways and adversely affect physical health. Meditation training may increase self-reported mindfulness, which has been linked to reductions in cognitive perseverations. However, there are no reports that directly link self-reported mindfulness and resting cortisol output. Here, the authors investigate this link. METHODS: In an observational study, we measured self-reported mindfulness and p.m. cortisol near the beginning a

Effects of stressor controllability on psychophysiological, cognitive and behavioural responses in patients with major depression and dysthymia.

BACKGROUND: The experience of uncontrollability and helplessness in the face of stressful life events is regarded as an important determinant in the development and maintenance of depression. The inability to successfully deal with stressors might be linked to dysfunctional prefrontal functioning. We assessed cognitive, behavioural and physiological effects of stressor uncontrollability in depressed and healthy individuals. In addition, relationships between altered cortical processing and cognitive vulnerability traits of depression were analysed. METHOD: A total of 26 unmedicated depressed

Exercise, cognition, and affective disorders.

Anxiety and depressive disorders are major contributors to global disability and are frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment, stress-system dysregulation, and cardiometabolic comorbidity. Although pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments remain central, limited access, partial response, and persistent residual symptoms highlight the need for integrative and scalable interventions. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on physical activity and structured exercise as systemic biological interventions for depression and anxiety, integrating clinical findings with mechanistic p

Decoding neural circuit dysregulation in bipolar disorder: Toward an advanced paradigm for multidimensional cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor treatment.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by a complex constellation of emotional, cognitive, and psychomotor disturbances, each deeply intertwined with underlying dysfunctions in large-scale brain networks and neurotransmitter systems. This manuscript integrates recent advances in neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and pharmacological research to provide a comprehensive view of BD's pathophysiology, emphasizing the role of network-specific dysfunctions and their clinical manifestations. We explore how dysregulation within the fronto-limbic network, particularly involving the prefrontal cortex (PFC)

A core role for cognitive processes in the acute onset and maintenance of post-traumatic stress in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common reaction to trauma in children and adolescents. While a significant minority of trauma-exposed youth go on to have persistent PTSD, many youths who initially have a severe traumatic stress response undergo natural recovery. The present study investigated the role of cognitive processes in shaping the early reactions of child and adolescents to traumatic stressors, and the transition to persistent clinically significant post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study of youth aged 8-17 years who had

Ketamine's impact on rumination-related brain dynamics: insights from a randomized controlled fMRI trial.

Rumination has been associated with aberrant dynamics of a coactivation pattern (CAP) comprising the default mode (DMN) and frontoparietal (FPN) networks. Ketamine exerts rapid antidepressant effects and may influence these dynamics via glutamatergic mechanisms. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled fMRI study, we investigated ketamine's effects on dynamic CAPs associated with rumination and examined whether inhibition of glutamatergic release through lamotrigine attenuates these effects. Seventy-five healthy adults were randomized to placebo-placebo, placebo-ketamine, or lamotrigi

Impact of chronotype on depression: The mediating roles of rumination and perceived stress.

Chronotype represents an independent risk factor for depression, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Potential mediators may include social jetlag (SJL), sleep quality, rumination, and perceived stress. Thus, this China-based study enrolled 122 patients with Depressive Episode (DE) and 126 healthy Controls (HC), assessing participants using: the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), and Perceived Stress

The Future-oriented Repetitive Thought (FoRT) scale: Validation in Chinese samples and application in the schizophrenia spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive thoughts are usually associated with psychopathology. The Future-oriented Repetitive Thought (FoRT) Scale is a measure designed to capture frequency of repetitive thought about positive and negative future events. However, the validity of the scale in Chinese population and its application in the schizophrenia spectrum have not been examined. METHODS: The current study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the FoRT scale and to apply it to the schizophrenia spectrum. In Study 1, three samples (total N = 1875) of university students were

Coupled changes between ruminating thoughts and resting-state brain networks during the transition into adulthood.

Perseverative negative thoughts, known as rumination, might arise from emotional challenges and preclude mental health when transitioning into adulthood. Due to its multifaceted nature, rumination can take several ruminative response styles, that diverge in manifestations, severity, and mental health outcomes. Still, prospective ruminative phenotypes remain elusive insofar. Longitudinal study designs are ideal for stratifying ruminative response styles, especially with resting-state functional MRI whose setup naturally elicits people's ruminative traits. Here, we considered self-rated question

Functional connectivity density of postcentral gyrus predicts rumination and major depressive disorders in males.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest. Recent evidence suggested that abnormal functional connectivity (FC) may be linked to the development of MDD, and gender differences existed in FC patterns. In this study, we utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) data from 41 healthy participants to identify FC patterns that correlate with levels of rumination in both genders. A 2-sample t-test showed no gender differences in rumination levels. A functional connectivity density (FCD) analysis was then conducted using DP

Psychological well-being of ruminative adolescents during the transition to COVID-19 school closures: An EMA study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with moderate-to-severe levels of trait rumination are at heightened risk for psychopathology and may be particularly vulnerable to disruptions caused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As most past research documenting the impact of COVID-19 on adolescent well-being has been cross-sectional, it is unclear exactly how ruminative adolescents responded to the onset of the pandemic as it unfolded. METHODS: We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to explore changes in rumination among adolescents during the initial transition to distance learning in the United

Direct and Indirect Effects of Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Systems on Depression and Current Suicidal Ideation Through Rumination and Self-Reflection.

This study aimed to evaluate direct and indirect effects of the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the behavioral activation system (BAS) on depression and current suicidal ideation through rumination and self-reflection in a sample of suicide attempters. Three hundred suicide attempters completed the Rumination/Reflection Questionnaire (RRQ), the Carver and White BIS/BAS scales, the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Results revealed that the BAS and BIS had direct effects on suicidal ideation but not depression. Low BAS had an indirect
