Temporal bone marrow of the rat and its connections to the inner ear.

Calvarial bone marrow has been found to be central in the brain immune response, being connected to the dura through channels which allow leukocyte trafficking. Temporal bone marrow is thought to play important roles in relation to the inner ear, but is still largely uncharacterized, given this bone complex anatomy. We characterized the geometry and connectivity of rat temporal bone marrow using lightsheet imaging of cleared samples and microCT. Bone marrow was identified in cleared tissue by cellular content (and in particular by the presence of megakaryocytes); since air-filled cavities are

Assessment of hearing and balance functions in patients with acromegaly by the use of an audiovestibular test battery: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Patients with acromegaly may have abnormalities in their hearing and balance as a result of modifications in body composition and i … ains unaffected, while the gains of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in the posterior and anterior semicircular canals are decreased. Additionally, these patients report experiencing subjective dizziness. Screening for hearing and balance in patients with acromegaly may improve the quality of life of patients and prevent problems related to balance disorders at an e …

A Synchrotron and Micro-CT Study of the Human Endolymphatic Duct System: Is Meniere's Disease Caused by an Acute Endolymph Backflow?

Background: The etiology of Meniere's disease (MD) and endolymphatic hydrops believed to underlie its symptoms remain unknown. One reason ma … e UEV and connecting ducts suggests that there is a reciprocal exchange of fluid among the utricle, semicircular canals, and the EDS. Based on the anatomic framework and previous experimental data, we speculate that precipitous vestibular symptoms in MD arise from a sudden increase in endolymph pressure caused by an uncontrolled endolymphatic sac secretion. A rapid r …

Signal and morphological changes in the endolymph of patients with vestibular schwannoma on non-contrast 3D FLAIR at 3 Tesla.

BACKGROUND: Non-contrast FLAIR revealed increased signal within the inner ear in patients with vestibular schwannoma, which is generally ass … ar perilymph with and without vertigo (5.54 vs. 5.51, p = 0.18). The endolymph of the vestibule and semicircular canals showed the following characteristic features: no visualization (n = 4), signal change (n = 1), or vestibular hydrops (n = 10). A correlation was not observed between vestibular hydrops and vertigo (p = 1.000). CONCLUSIONS: PPI may provide useful in …

Morphological validation of a novel bi-material 3D-printed model of temporal bone for middle ear surgery education.

BACKGROUND: A new model of 3D-printed temporal bone with an innovative distinction between soft and hard tissues is described and presented … that one millimeter for each anatomical region and close to zero for regions such as temporal bone, semicircular canals or facial nerve. The evaluation of the printing technique revealed mismatches of 0.045±0.424 mm for soft and -0.093±0.240 mm for hard tissues between the initial prepared geometry and the actual printed model. CONCLUSIONS: While other reported mode …

The analyses showed a high level of agreement between the atlas-based segmentation and the manual gold standard with an overlap of 89% for the right ear and 86% for the left ear (measured by dice scores). This probabilist …

The main … s of stapes (16.9 vs. 40.9 %) and posterior crus of stapes (19.1 vs. 42.6 %). The other structures (semicircular canals, skull base at mastoid and middle ear, jugular bulb, sinus sigmoideus, facial nerve) could be visualized well in both groups with rates around 85-100 %. Even CBCT shows little limitations in visualization of the small structures of the middle and in …

Background factors in patients with compensated video head impulse test gain after vestibular rehabilitation therapy.

OBJECTIVES: A few patients with chronic vestibular dysfunction have shown improved video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) gain after vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), whereas others have shown either slight improvement or remained stable. Therefore, we investigated whether some specific factors affected the vHIT gain after VRT. METHODS: Six hundred and eighty-six patients with intractable vertigo/dizziness who were hospitalized for neuro-otological examinations at the Vertigo/Dizziness Center of Nara Medical University between July 2014 and October 2023 were enrolled. In addition, patients who

Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Function in Adolescents With Sport-Related Concussion: Preliminary Results.

BACKGROUND: Oculomotor impairments, dizziness, and imbalance are common after sports-related concussion (SRC) in adolescents and suggest a relationship between SRC and vestibular system dysfunction. However, it is not clear whether the source of these problems is attributable to the peripheral or central vestibular system. HYPOTHESIS: The video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), which assesses peripheral vestibular function, will show differences in gain between adolescents with and without SRC. Furthermore, there will be an association between vHIT and clinical balance and vestibular/oculomotor testi

An unusual complication of osteotome sinus floor elevation: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Maxillary sinus floor elevation in cases of reduced vertical bone height in the posterior maxilla allows predictable implant placement. The osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique has shorter healing and waiting times because the fixture can be placed in the implant recipient site simultaneously with the ridge augmentation. Implant site preparation is more comfortable for the patient when performed with spiral drills than with continuous malleting of the osteotomes. Membrane perforation is the most frequent complication with the OSFE technique; postoperative infection is rare. Benign

Positional down beating nystagmus in 50 patients: cerebellar disorders and possible anterior semicircular canalithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the clinical significance of positional down beat nystagmus (pDBN). METHODS: A discussion of the neuro-otological findings in 50 consecutive patients with pDBN. RESULTS: In 38 patients there was evidence of CNS disease (central group) but in 12 there was not (idiopathic group). In the CNS group, presenting symptoms were gait, speech, and autonomic dysfunction whereas in the idiopathic group patients mostly reported positional vertigo. The main neurological and oculomotor signs in the CNS group were explained by cerebellar dysfunction, including 13 patients with multipl

Vestibular control of skeletal geometry in the guinea pig: a problem of good trim?

Motor control of different segments of the body with multiple degrees of freedom appears to be coordinated by utilizing preferred axes of motor activity. This hypothesis may also be applied to vestibular control of posture. To explore this question we studied the anatomical relationship between the head and the cervical vertebral column by taking radiographs of the head-neck region in unrestrained alert guinea pigs. We determined that biomechanical constraints contribute to the stereotypical skeletal geometry observed in the resting animal and to a functional segmentation of the head-neck move
