Covert Stuttering: Investigation of the Paradigm Shift From Covertly Stuttering to Overtly Stuttering.

PURPOSE: Covert stuttering is a type of stuttering experience that occurs when a person who stutters conceals his or her stutter from others, attempting to be perceived as a nonstuttering individual. A person who covertly stutters experiences the cognitive and emotional elements of stuttering with minimum overt behavioral symptoms. Individuals who covertly stutter are able to provide insight into their experiences in attempting to be perceived as nonstuttering individuals. Covert stuttering is a topic that continues to be in need of a formal definition. The current investigation is utilizing t

The Impact of Stuttering on Development of Self-Identity, Relationships, and Quality of Life in Women Who Stutter.

PURPOSE: The experiences of women who stutter have been underresearched. Clinicians have little guidance from the research literature on issues specific to women who stutter and are likely to have less clinical contact with this group than with men who stutter because of the higher prevalence of stuttering in men. This study explored the experiences of a small group of women who stutter with a particular focus on what the main current issues are and how gender may have influenced experiences with stuttering. METHOD: This qualitative study involved recruitment of 9 women who stutter (aged 35-8

Maintenance of Social Anxiety in Stuttering: A Cognitive-Behavioral Model.

PURPOSE: Stuttering is a speech disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety in social-evaluative situations. A growing body of research has confirmed a significant rate of social anxiety disorder among adults who stutter. Social anxiety disorder is a chronic and disabling anxiety disorder associated with substantial life impairment. Several influential models have described cognitive-behavioral factors that contribute to the maintenance of social anxiety in nonstuttering populations. The purpose of the present article is to apply these leading models to the experience of social anxiety for peop

Identifying risk for language impairment in children from linguistically diverse low-income schools.

PURPOSE: To improve screening procedures for children in a linguistically diverse context, we combined tasks known to reveal grammatical deficits in children with language impairment (LI) with training to facilitate performance on a verb elicitation task. METHOD: Sixty-four first grade children participated. The objective grammatical measures included elicitation of 12 past tense regular verbs preceded by a teaching phase (teach-test), the sentence recall (SR) subtest of the Clinical evaluation of language fundamentals (CELF-4), and a tally of all conjugated verbs from a narrative retell task

Early adolescent language development following intrathecal chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

PURPOSE: Central nervous system (CNS) prophylaxis in the treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is routinely achieved through intrathecal chemotherapy (ITC). The presence of high level language deficits in older children who received CNS-directed ITC for ALL in early childhood is yet to be elucidated, with previous research suggesting that high level language deficits may appear later in ALL survivors' development at an age when these skills typically emerge. METHOD: A test battery covering foundational language skills and higher-order language skills was administered to f

The Relationship Between Grammatical Development and Disfluencies in Preschool Children Who Stutter and Those Who Recover.

PURPOSE: The dual diathesis stressor model indicates that a mismatch between a child's endogenous linguistic abilities and exogenous linguistic contexts is one factor that contributes to stuttering behavior. In the present study, we used a developmental framework to investigate if reducing the gap between endogenous and exogenous linguistics factors would result in less disfluency for typical children, children who recover from stuttering (CWS-R), and children who persist. METHOD: Children between 28 and 43 months of age participated in this study: 8 typical children, 5 CWS-R, and 8 children

Speech Versus Speaking: The Experiences of People With Parkinson's Disease and Implications for Intervention.

PURPOSE: In this project, we explore the experiences of people who report speech changes associated with Parkinson's disease as they describe taking part in everyday communication situations and report impressions related to speech treatment. METHOD: Twenty-four community-dwelling adults with Parkinson's disease took part in face-to-face, semistructured interviews. Qualitative research methods were used to code and develop themes related to the interviews. RESULTS: Two major themes emerged. The first, called "speaking," included several subthemes: thinking about speaking, weighing value vers

The Effects of Lip-Closure Exercise on Lip Strength and Function Following Full Facial Transplantation: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Facial transplantation is a relatively new option for individuals with severe facial disfigurements. Clinical case studies on existing patients indicate many instances of persistent facial motor impairment for facial expression, speech, and swallowing. These preliminary findings motivate additional research on the impact of lip-strengthening exercises following facial transplantation. METHOD: In this study, we assessed the efficacy of an 8-week, biofeedback-driven, lip closure-strengthening exercise program in a single patient 1-year status post-full facial transplantation.
