Background: Externally guided (EG) and internally guided (IG) movements are postulated to recruit two parallel neural circuits, in which motor cortical neurons interact with either the cerebellum or striatum via distinct thalamic nuclei. Research suggests EG movements rely more heavily on the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit, whereas IG movements rely more on the striato-pallido-thalamo-cortical circuit (1). Because Parkinson's (PD) involves striatal dysfunction, individuals with PD have difficulty generating IG movements (2). Objectives: Determine whether individuals with PD would employ a

Cortical and subcortical nuclei degenerate in the dementias, but less is known about changes in the white matter tracts that connect them. To better understand white matter changes in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD), we used a novel approach to extract full 3D profiles of fiber bundles from diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and map white matter abnormalities onto detailed models of each pathway. The result is a spatially complex picture of tract-by-tract microstructural changes. Our atlas of tracts for each disease consists of 21 anatomi

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal dystonia (LD) is a voice motor disorder involving multilevel central networks. Existing LD functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies use heterogeneous region-of-interest (ROI) definitions and parcellation schemes, limiting comparability and reproducibility. To provide a more consistent framework for ROI definition and whole-brain network-level analysis, we aimed to develop and technically validate a standardized, small-structure-preserving whole-brain ROI atlas for LD fMRI research.
METHODS: We integrated Automated Anatomical Labeling version 1 (AAL1)-derived

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral blood flow (CBF) reductions during non-REM sleep have been consistently demonstrated in positron emission tomography (PET) studies, but PET's limitations restrict its use. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI allows repeated, noninvasive CBF measurement but has rarely been applied to sleep. This study examined global and regional CBF changes during wakefulness and pharmacologically induced sleep after sleep deprivation, with an exploratory focus on the ascending arousal network (AAN).
METHODS: Twenty-one healthy participants (13 male, 8 female; mean age = 22.4 ± 3.1 years)

Brain stimulation (BStim) encompasses multiple modalities (e.g., deep brain stimulation, responsive neurostimulation) that utilize electrodes implanted in deep brain structures to treat neurological disorders. Currently, BStim is primarily used to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson's, though indications are expanding to include neuropsychiatric disorders like depression and schizophrenia. Traditional BStim systems are "open-loop" and deliver constant electrical stimulation based on manually-determined parameters. Advancements in BStim have enabled development of "closed-loop" systems t

Occlusal disharmony has a negative impact on emotion. The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) neurons are the primary afferent nuclei that convey proprioceptive information from proprioceptors and low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the periodontal ligament and jaw muscles in the cranio-oro-facial regions. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) and the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) of thalamus have been proven to be crucial relay stations in ascending pathway of proprioception. The VPM sends numerous projections to primary somatosensory areas (SI), which

INTRODUCTION: Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) within deep structures adjacent to the third ventricle is associated with worse outcomes when compared with lobar ICH due to the critical role of deep nuclei in normal neurological functioning. New evidence suggests another contributing factor to poor outcome is obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid outflow by clot burden causing mechanical compression of the third ventricle. The authors reviewed the incidence and outcomes of mechanical compression ICH in order to identify this high-risk group which may potentially benefit from minimally invasive evac

Advanced imaging methods now allow cell-type-specific recording of neural activity across the mammalian brain, potentially enabling the exploration of how brain-wide dynamical patterns give rise to complex behavioural states1-12. Dissociation is an altered behavioural state in which the integrity of experience is disrupted, resulting in reproducible cognitive phenomena including the dissociation of stimulus detection from stimulus-related affective responses. Dissociation can occur as a result of trauma, epilepsy or dissociative drug use13,14, but despite its substantial basic and clinical imp

INTRODUCTION: Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is associated with changes in dorsal striatal parts of the basal ganglia (caudate nucleus and putamen), related to dysfunction in the cortico-striato-thalamic circuits which help mediate executive and motor functions. We aimed to determine whether the size and shape of striatal structures correlated with diagnosis of bvFTD, and measures of clinical severity, behaviour and cognition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging scans from 28 patients with bvFTD and 26 healthy controls were manually traced using image analys

UNLABELLED: Although brain injury after neonatal encephalopathy has been characterised well in high-income countries, little is known about such injury in low- and middle-income countries. Such injury accounts for an estimated 1 million neonatal deaths per year. We used magnetic resonance (MR) biomarkers to characterise perinatal brain injury, and examined early childhood outcomes in South India.
METHODS: We recruited consecutive term or near term infants with evidence of perinatal asphyxia and a Thompson encephalopathy score ≥6 within 6 h of birth, over 6 months. We performed conventional MR

1. The small protein Bv8, secreted by the skin of the frog Bombina variegata, belongs to a novel family of secreted proteins whose mammalian orthologues have been identified and named prokineticins (PK-1 and PK-2). 2. Bv8 (from 2.5 to 60 pmol) injected into the lateral ventricles of rat brain suppressed diurnal, nocturnal, deprivation-induced and neuropeptide Y-stimulated feeding and stimulated diurnal drinking. Nocturnal drinking was increased only in fasted rats. 3. PK-2 mRNA is expressed in discrete areas of the rat brain, including the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), medial preoptic area (M

Although the pathophysiology of primary dystonias is currently unknown, it is thought to involve changes in the basal ganglia-thalamus-cortex circuit, particularly activity imbalances between direct and indirect striatal pathways. Substance P, a member of the tachykinin family of neuropeptides, is a major component in the direct pathway from striatum to basal ganglia output nuclei. In the present study quantitative autoradiography was used to examine changes in neurokinin-1 (NK-1) and neurokinin-3 (NK-3) receptors in mutant dystonic hamsters (dt(sz)), a well characterized model of paroxysmal d

The predominantly non-Antarctic family Bovichtidae is phyletically basal within the perciform suborder Notothenioidei, the dominant component of the Antarctic fish fauna. In this article we focus on the South Atlantic bovichtids Bovichtus diacanthus, the klipfish from tide pools at Tristan da Cunha, and Cottoperca gobio, the frogmouth from the Patagonian shelf and Falkland Islands. We document the anatomy and histology of the brains, olfactory apparatus, retina, and cephalic lateral line system. We also use the microvascular casting agent Microfil to examine ocular vascular structures. We prov

There are over seven million people in the United States living with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and two-thirds of these patients are postmenopausal women. In addition to neurodegenerative changes within the cortex and hippocampus, there are pronounced pathological changes in the mammillary bodies (MBs), which are thought to play a role in the development of AD. Currently, we documented in 5XFAD+ female mice that there was an early onset of Aβ immunostaining extracellularly that coincided with increased staining of vesicular glutamate transporter2 (vGlut2) intracellularly in medial MB neurons. This review summarizes major findings and recent advances in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of migraine. A multi database search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed with variations of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and headache until 20th September 2021. The search generated 2897 studies, 676 which were duplicates and 1836 were not related to headache. Of the remaining 385 studies examined, further exclusions for not migraine (n = 114), and not MRS of human brain (n = 128), and non-original contributions (n = 51) or conferences (n = 24) or case studies (n = 11) or non-E

The cerebellum is associated with the biology of migraine in a variety of ways. Clinically, symptoms such as fatigue, motor weakness, vertigo, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and finding words, nausea, and visual disturbances are common in different types of migraine. The neural basis of these symptoms is complex, not completely known, and likely involve activation of both specific and shared circuits throughout the brain. Posterior circulation stroke, or neurosurgical removal of posterior fossa tumors, as well as anatomical tract tracing in animals, provided the first insights to theorize

Thiamine/vitamin B1 deficiency can lead to behavioral changes and neurotoxicity in humans. This may due in part to vascular damage, neuroinflammation and neuronal degeneration in the diencephalon, which is seen in animal models of pyrithiamine-enhanced thiamine deficiency. However, the time course of the progression of these changes in the animal models has been poorly characterized. Therefore, in this study, the progression of: 1) activated microglial association with vasculature; 2) neurodegeneration; and 3) any vascular leakage in the forebrain during the progress of thiamine deficiency wer

Existing classifications of central nervous system sleep disorders do not often provide tools to diagnose the majority of patients complaining of sleep-related symptoms, nor always guide effective treatment. I present a novel classification system that completely separates clinical syndromes from anatomical localization, pathophysiology, and etiology. The clinical syndrome I present can describe the majority of patients, but can be fractionated into individual subgroups for further study. By then separating the anatomy and physiology from the symptoms, an avenue of research becomes available t

Traditional concept holds that the pain unit consists of three neurons. The first of these, the primary nociceptive neuron, starts with the nociceptors and terminates in the dorsal spinal cord. The second one, called spinothalamic neuron, crosses over in front of the central canal and connects the dorsal horn with the thalamus. The third one, called thalamo-cortical neuron, terminates in the "pain centres" of the cerebral cortex. While this simplistic scheme is useful for didactic purposes, the actual situation is more complex. First, in the periphery it is only nociception that occurs, while
