[Surgical treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Functional assessment].

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), when associated with adverse skeletal dysmorphia, can be managed by curative surgery i.e. advanced maxillomandibular associated with genioplasty and uvulopalatoglossoplasty ("6 in 1"). The purpose of this study was to assess the functional impact of this procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was made on 27 patients with OSAS surgically treated between 1998 and 2009. The functional results were considered satisfactory when postoperative apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) was <15/h and/or at least decreased by 50%. RESULTS: Af

Changes in serum levels of MDA and MMP-9 after UPF in patients with OSAS.

The aim of the study was to assess the markers of oxidant-antioxidant status in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) who underwent uvulopalatal flap (UPF) surgery. Twenty-five patients who underwent UPF surgery participated in this study. Polysomnographic examinations were performed before and after the surgery to assess sleep apnea in all patients and to determine the success of the UPF surgery regarding the improvement in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Descriptive factors (BMI, age, gender and neck thickness, etc.) of patients were recorded before operation. Blood samples w

Long-time follow-up after UPPP for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Results of sleep apnea recordings and subjective evaluation 6 months and 2 years after surgery.

Fifty unselected consecutive patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). The diagnosis was based on the patient's history and recording of respiration movements (Static Charge Sensitive Bed. SCSB) and oximetry, alone or combined with polysomnography. Renewed SCSB oximetry recordings were used to evaluate the success of the treatment. Six months postoperatively 40% of the patients were classified as non-responders, i.e. their oxygen desaturation indices (ODI) were reduced by less than 50% or were still above 20. The mean body mass index (BMI

Mortality and apnea index in obstructive sleep apnea. Experience in 385 male patients.

Although obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been studied in detail for over a decade, the mortality of this disorder is unclear. We calculated cumulative survival in 385 male OSA patients. We found that those with an apnea index (AI) greater than 20 had a much greater mortality than those with AI = less than 20. The probability of cumulative eight-year survival was .96 +/- 0.02 (SE) for AI = less than 20 vs. 63 +/- 0.17 for AI greater than 20 (p less than .05). This difference in mortality related to AI was particularly true in the patients less than 50 years of age in whom mortality from other

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty may decrease the incidence of Parkinson's disease associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is increased among patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and whether surgical treatment can prevent such an increase. This was a retrospective cohort study. We analysed the claims data from the Korea National Health Insurance Service. A total of 202,726 patients who were newly diagnosed with OSA between 2007 and 2014 were included. The patients were divided into two groups: patients who underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (surgery group, n = 22,742) and those who did not (conservative group, n
