CONTEXT: Molecular analyses indicate that periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive (laminin-rich) patterns in melanomas are generated by invasive tumor cells by vasculogenic mimicry. Some observers, however, consider these patterns to be fibrovascular septa, generated by a stromal host response.
OBJECTIVE: To delineate differences between vasculogenic mimicry patterns and fibrovascular septa in primary uveal melanomas.
DESIGN: Frequency distributions, associations with outcome, and thicknesses of trichrome-positive and PAS-positive looping patterns were determined in 234 primary uveal melanomas.

We report the case of a young female patient with a diffuse choroidal hemangioma (DCH) and glaucoma as part of Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) and symptomatic retinal detachment that was treated successfully with photodynamic therapy (PDT) and intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB). The hypertensive gas technique induces avascularity within the eye during enucleation of a melanoma. Before touching the eye for enucleation, pressure is raised to maximum by an intravitreal injection of approximately 1.4 ml of gas (perfluorocarbon, air) resulting in a rock-hard eye. We studied eight cases of massive, spontaneous subretinal hemorrhage which was characterized by the sudden appearance of one or more large, dark, elevated hematomas under the retina. The initial location of the hemorrhage may have been in the choroid or under the pigment epithelium, or both, but further extravasation of the blood anteriorly frequently resulted in hemorrhage under the neurosensory retina and in the vitreous. BACKGROUND: Development of tumours such as adrenocortical carcinomas (ACC), choroid plexus tumours (CPT) or female breast cancers before age 31 or multiple primary cancers belonging to the Li-Fraumeni (LFS) spectrum is, independently of the familial history, highly suggestive of a germline TP53 mutation.
