Prediction mapping of human leptospirosis using ANN, GWR, SVM and GLM approaches.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports of the National Ministry of Health and Treatment of Iran (NMHT) show that Gilan has a higher annual incidence rate of leptospirosis than other provinces across the country. Despite several efforts of the government and NMHT to eradicate leptospirosis, it remains a public health problem in this province. Modelling and Prediction of this disease may play an important role in reduction of the prevalence. METHODS: This study aims to model and predict the spatial distribution of leptospirosis utilizing Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), Generalized Linear Model (G

Scrub typhus islands in the Taiwan area and the association between scrub typhus disease and forest land use and farmer population density: geographically weighted regression.

BACKGROUND: The Taiwan area comprises the main island of Taiwan and several small islands located off the coast of the Southern China. The eastern two-thirds of Taiwan are characterized by rugged mountains covered with tropical and subtropical vegetation. The western region of Taiwan is characterized by flat or gently rolling plains. Geographically, the Taiwan area is diverse in ecology and environment, although scrub typhus threatens local human populations. In this study, we investigate the effects of seasonal and meteorological factors on the incidence of scrub typhus infection among 10 loc

Ecological niche modeling of Coccidioides spp. in western North American deserts.

Coccidioidomycosis is an endemic infectious disease in western North American deserts caused by the dimorphic ascomycete Coccidioides spp. Even though there has been an increase in the number of reported cases in the last years, few positive isolations have been obtained from soil samples in endemic areas for the disease. This low correlation between epidemiological and environmental data prompted us to better characterize the fundamental ecological niche of this important fungal pathogen. By using a combination of environmental variables and geospatially referenced points, where positive isol

Breeding of Anopheles mosquitoes in irrigated areas of South Punjab, Pakistan.

As part of investigations on potential linkages between irrigation and malaria transmission, all surface water bodies in and around three villages along an irrigation distributary in South Punjab, Pakistan, were surveyed for anopheline mosquito larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) from April 1999 to March 2000. Samples were characterized according to exposure to sunlight, substratum, presence of vegetation, fauna, inorganic matter and physical water condition (clear/turbid/foul). Also water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electroconductivity (EC) and pH of sites were recorded. A total of 37982 Anop

Strengthening the Montreal protocol: does it cool down the greenhouse?

Strengthening of the Montreal Protocol is recently being negotiated in London in 1990 in order to achieve further reductions of the regulated CFCs and to include possibly more substances. In this article the implications of different policies with respect to control of ozone depleting substances for climate change are analysed, including the proposed substitution by HCFCs and HFCs, carbon tetrachloride and methylchloroform. A special halocarbon module was developed within the framework of RIVM's Integrated Model to Assess the Greenhouse Effect (IMAGE). IMAGE is a parameterized science based po

Weather Resilience of Hays Converter Beef Heifers with Divergent Residual Feed Intake Across Different Environmental Conditions.

This study examines whether efficiency of feed utilization affects heifer resilience in intensively fed Hays Converter beef heifers in Western Canada from 2019 to 2023. A total of 106 heifers were tested in five yearly contemporary groups; 18-27 per year, each group tested for 75 ± 5 d to determine residual feed intake (RFI) during winter (2019; age 8 mo ± 16 d) and spring (2020-2023; age 12 mo ± 12 d). Performance parameters, including dry matter intake (DMI), and feeding behavior, were recorded daily, and body weight (BW), average daily gain, and gain-to-feed ratio (G:F = ADG/DMI) recorded w

When non-specific effects matter: methodological considerations in a randomized controlled trial of abdominal massage for pediatric functional constipation.

UNLABELLED: The concurrent rise of global sea levels and coastal population growth is intensifying exposure to climate-driven hazards. In Ireland, where most major urban centres are on, or connected to the coast, the nature and severity of hazard impacts vary across diverse coastal landscapes. A spatially explicit assessment of coastal exposure is therefore critical for effective risk management and climate adaptation planning. This study presents a national-scale Coastal Exposure Index for Ireland, developed using the Coastal Vulnerability Model within the InVEST® software suite. The index in

Forecasting greenhouse gas emissions in South Asia: a time series analysis using ARIMA models (1975-2030).

Based on past data from 1975 to 2023, this paper forecasts South Asia's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through 2030 using the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. The forecasts indicate a sustained rise in emissions across most South Asian nations, with India experiencing the most significant absolute increase, reaching approximately 4610 MtCO₂ by 2030. Bangladesh and Pakistan are expected to experience considerable growth (308.4 and 602.3 MtCO₂, respectively). In contrast, Afghanistan's emissions are projected to remain below 30 MtCO₂ with minor fluctuations, while smaller

Annual seroprevalence of Yersinia pestis in coyotes as predictors of interannual variation in reports of human plague cases in Arizona, United States.

Although several health departments collect coyote blood samples for plague surveillance, the association between reported human cases and coyote seroprevalence rates remains anecdotal. Using data from an endemic region of the United States, we sought to quantify this association. From 1974 to 1998, about 2,276 coyote blood samples from four Arizona counties were tested for serological evidence of exposure to Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague. Using a titer threshold presumed to be indicative of recent infection (serum titers of ≥1:256), we found a statistically significant relati

The impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation on the incidence of infectious diarrhea in China: insights from a 15-year national surveillance analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diarrhea remains a significant public health challenge, with climatic factors potentially playing a crucial role in its epidemiological spread. However, the precise mechanisms through which the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences diarrheal morbidity are still not fully understood. METHODS: We collected monthly other infectious diarrhea (OID) incidence and climatic data across the 31 provincial administrative divisions of mainland China (2005-2019). Wavelet analysis was employed to examine the periodicity of OID and the phase relationships between ENSO, climat

Climate benefit and ecological cost trade-offs for ocean iron fertilization.

Ocean iron fertilization (OIF) is being discussed as a potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy1. Yet the trade-offs between climate benefits and ecological costs remain poorly understood2-4. Here we use a process-rich ocean biogeochemical model with validated representations of marine biodiversity and biogeochemistry5 to quantify fertilization potential and ecosystem impact across ten ocean biomes over 60 years. We find regional disparities in climate ecosystem trade-offs: biomes with comparable CDR efficiency have contrasting ecological outcomes. The Southern Ocean and the equatorial

Daily, seasonal, and flood-dependent dynamics of water quality in a lowland urban stream in a Mediterranean climate.

Water quality in streams provides fundamental information on the stream's ecosystem functioning and status. High-frequency measurements, taken with sensors, can reveal details about hydrological and biogeochemical processes in these streams, which are difficult to obtain through other sampling methods. Such measurements are generally lacking in streams in Mediterranean climates, and thus, their temporal water quality patterns are not entirely clear. This study aimed to quantify and characterize the daily, seasonal, and flood-dependent water quality dynamics in a lowland urban Mediterranean str

How school and community supports influence psychosocial outcomes of children experiencing emotional maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that experiences of emotional maltreatment (i.e., emotional abuse and neglect) can compromise children's development. However, less work has been done to further our understanding of protective factors, which would serve to inform how we can best assist families at risk of emotional maltreatment and strengthen children's resilience. OBJECTIVE: The current study evaluates whether school and/or community supports moderate relations between emotional abuse or neglect and child psychosocial health (i.e., internalizing and externalizing problems). Association of size, climatic factors, and mercury body burdens with movement behavior in American alligators.

Animal movement behavior provides insight into organismal and ecological function. These functions are often disturbed by anthropogenic influences, such as urbanization and habitat fragmentation, yet the effects of long-term exposures to environmental contaminants on movement have yet to be examined. The long lifespans and broad diets of crocodilians often lead to bioaccumulation of persistent contaminants and confer a marked vulnerability to consequent physiological effects. In this study, we investigate the relationships between blood concentrations of mercury (Hg), a widespread contaminant

Phenological trends and associated climate drivers of a tree community in lowland dipterocarp forest, Western Ghats, India.

Understanding phenological responses of tropical forest plant communities is crucial for identifying climate-induced changes in ecosystem dynamics. Monitoring phenology across diverse species in natural habitats provides cost-effective insights for conserving both species and forests. We studied tree phenology in a lowland evergreen dipterocarp forest in the Western Ghats, India. About 719 tree individuals representing 95 species were monitored for their vegetative and reproductive phenology from April 2021 to September 2023. Circular statistics detected seasonality in phenological events and

Evolutionary and demographic consequences of temperature-induced masculinization under climate warming: the effects of mate choice.

BACKGROUND: One of the dangers of global climate change to wildlife is distorting sex ratios by temperature-induced sex reversals in populations where sex determination is not exclusively genetic, potentially leading to population collapse and/or sex-determination system transformation. Here we introduce a new concept on how these outcomes may be altered by mate choice if sex-chromosome-linked phenotypic traits allow females to choose between normal and sex-reversed (genetically female) males. RESULTS: We developed a theoretical model to investigate if an already existing autosomal allele enc

Importance of fisheries for food security across three climate change vulnerable deltas.

Deltas are home to a large and growing proportion of the world's population, often living in conditions of extreme poverty. Deltaic ecosystems are ecologically significant as they support high biodiversity and a variety of fisheries, however these coastal environments are extremely vulnerable to climate change. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (Bangladesh/India), the Mahanadi (India), and the Volta (Ghana) are among the most important and populous delta regions in the world and they are all considered at risk of food insecurity and climate change. The fisheries sector is vital for populations tha

Addressing vulnerability, building resilience: community-based adaptation to vector-borne diseases in the context of global change.

BACKGROUND: The threat of a rapidly changing planet - of coupled social, environmental and climatic change - pose new conceptual and practical challenges in responding to vector-borne diseases. These include non-linear and uncertain spatial-temporal change dynamics associated with climate, animals, land, water, food, settlement, conflict, ecology and human socio-cultural, economic and political-institutional systems. To date, research efforts have been dominated by disease modeling, which has provided limited practical advice to policymakers and practitioners in developing policies and program
