Innovative methodology to transfer conventional GC-MS heroin profiling to UHPLC-MS/MS.

Nowadays, in forensic laboratories, heroin profiling is frequently carried out by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This analytical technique is well established, provides good sensitivity and reproducibility, and allows the use of large databases. Despite those benefits, recently introduced analytical techniques, such as ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC), could offer better chromatographic performance, which needs to be considered to increase the analysis throughput for heroin profiling. With the latter, chromatographic conditions were optimized throug

Simulation of the three-dimensional hinge flow fields of a bileaflet mechanical heart valve under aortic conditions.

Thromboembolic complications of bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHV) are believed to be due to detrimental stresses imposed on blood elements by the hinge flows. Characterization of these flows is thus crucial to identify the underlying causes for complications. In this study, we conduct three-dimensional pulsatile flow simulations through the hinge of a BMHV under aortic conditions. Hinge and leaflet geometries are reconstructed from the Micro-Computed Tomography scans of a BMHV. Simulations are conducted using a Cartesian sharp-interface immersed-boundary methodology combined with a seco

Integrating functional knowledge during sample clustering for microarray data using unsupervised decision trees.

Clustering of microarray gene expression data is performed routinely, for genes as well as for samples. Clustering of genes can exhibit functional relationships between genes; clustering of samples on the other hand is important for finding e.g. disease subtypes, relevant patient groups for stratification or related treatments. Usually this is done by first filtering the genes for high-variance under the assumption that they carry most of the information needed for separating different sample groups. If this assumption is violated, important groupings in the data might be lost. Furthermore, cl

Towards practical radiopharmaceutical treatment planning: a review of dosimetry simplification techniques.

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) plays an important role in modern precision oncology. However, treatment activity is still prescribed by fixed-dose protocols rather than adjusted to planned patient-specific absorbed dose (AD). Individualized dosimetry holds promise for improving treatment planning but is not yet standard. One main reason is that present dosimetry workflows depend on repeated imaging at multiple time points and require kinetic modeling and computational modeling. This review covers recent approaches to make dosimetry more practical and easier to use in everyday RPT workflows.

Improving the robustness of the immersed interface method through regularized velocity reconstruction.

Robust, broadly applicable fluid-structure interaction (FSI) algorithms remain a challenge for computational mechanics. Efforts in this area are driven by the need to enhance predictive accuracy and efficiency in FSI simulations, align with experimental observations, and unravel complex multiscale and multiphysics phenomena, while addressing challenges in developing more robust and efficient methodologies. In previous work, we introduced an immersed interface method (IIM) for discrete surfaces and an extension based on an immersed Lagrangia-Eulerian (ILE) coupling strategy for modeling FSI inv
