Contact Dermatitis to Diabetes Medical Devices.

Skin adverse reactions to diabetes medical devices have been reported frequently over recent years. Adhesives attaching glucose sensors and continuous insulin infusion sets to the skin are proven to cause both allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis in patients with diabetes mellitus. Several allergens contained in adhesives and/or parts of medical devices are documented to cause allergic contact dermatitis, with acrylate chemicals being the most common culprit-especially isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), but also 2,2'-methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol) monoacrylate or cyan…

Atopic Dermatitis: Striving for Reliable Biomarkers.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a highly heterogeneous inflammatory disease regarding both its pathophysiology and clinical manifestations. However, it is treated according to the "one-size-fits-all" approach, which may restrict response to treatment. Thus, there is an unmet need for the stratification of patients with AD into distinct endotypes and clinical phenotypes based on biomarkers that will contribute to the development of precision medicine in AD. The development of reliable biomarkers that may distinguish which patients with AD are most likely to benefit from specific targeted therapies is…

Innate Immune Mechanisms in Contact Dermatitis.

Allergies are highly prevalent hypersensitivity responses to usually harmless substances. They are mediated by the immune system which causes pathologic responses such as type I (rhinoconjunctivitis, allergic asthma, atopy) or type IV hypersensitivity (allergic contact dermatitis). The different types of allergy are mediated by effector and memory T cells and, in the case of type I hypersensitivity, B cells. A prerequisite for the activation of these cells of the adaptive immune system is the activation of the innate immune system. The resulting inflammation is essential not only for the initi…

Food allergy testing in atopic dermatitis.

Food allergy and food-related worsening of dermatitis can occur in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). We reviewed the relationship of AD with food allergen hypersensitivity and the risks and benefits of food allergen testing and avoidance in patients with AD. Skin prick testing and specific immunoglobulin E to aeroallergens may identify patients with immediate hypersensitivity. Atopy patch tests may detect non-immunoglobulin E-mediated reactions but are not standardized or routinely used. Younger children with more severe AD in whom the optimal management failed may have food-triggered AD. …

Mouse Model of Irritant Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, eczematous dermatitis, and chronic itching. This disease severely affects the quality of life. Considering that the current treatment approaches are not ideal, more extensive research is needed to develop new treatments. Mainly, a mouse model is needed to investigate the effectiveness of new drugs to treat this disease. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to create a mouse model of irritant contact dermatitis. METHODS: In the current study, we used BALB/c female mice to p…

Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Pramoxine (Pramocaine).

Prescription and over-the-counter topical anesthetics are commonly used. Although allergy to amide and ester anesthetics is known, little has been reported on the nonamide, nonester pramoxine (pramocaine). This article briefly reviews allergy to topical anesthetics, provides detailed information on pramoxine, and describes characteristics of multiple patients with positive, relevant reactions to pramoxine.

Autoimmune Progesterone Dermatitis: A Systematic Review.

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis (AIPD) is a cyclical, cutaneous reaction to endogenous progesterone that occurs throughout the menstrual cycle. The cutaneous manifestations of AIPD vary greatly from patient to patient, ranging anywhere from urticaria to erythema multiforme to anaphylaxis. As such, recognition, diagnosis, and management of this condition are difficult for clinicians. In the present article, we conducted a systematic review of 112 articles and 132 individual cases to summarize the clinical features and presentation of AIPD while also summarizing the successes and failures of …

Incontinence-associated dermatitis: who is affected?

OBJECTIVE: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients possess multiple risk factors for developing loss of skin integrity, particularly incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). IAD is an inflammatory skin condition resulting from repeated and prolonged contact with urine, faeces or both. This study aimed to measure the incidence and clinical characteristics of adult ICU patients with IAD. METHOD: This was a prospective observational study conducted over three months in an adult ICU. Included patients were ≥18 years who experienced faecal incontinence during their intensive care admission. Patients w…

Burning Mouth Syndrome and Contact Dermatitis.

: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a condition that remains a diagnostic challenge and is frequently difficult to treat. Rather than being a singular entity, more recent research has suggested that the diagnosis of BMS encompasses a family of syndromes. Of this family, type 3 has been identified as being related to contact dermatitis. Although this subtype has been most commonly associated with dental allergens, several food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products have also been identified as allergens related to the onset of BMS. Failure to identify these allergens prevents timely diagnosis and…
