We sought to determine whether left ventricular (LV) function is abnormal in a fetus with severe tricuspid valve disease (TVD), and whether it may contribute to the outcome. We measured the LV Tei index (including isovolumic relaxation [IRT], contraction, and ejection times) in 31 fetuses with TVD, compared the data with measurements from 32 normal fetuses, and correlated these measurements with pulmonary morphology and outcome. LV Tei index was significantly greater, ejection times shorter, and IRT longer in TVD compared with controls. The Tei index was highest in fetuses with either pulmonar

OBJECTIVE: To review retrospectively the experience of surgical treatment of Ebstein's malformation in 108 patients.
METHODS: One hundred and eight patients with Ebsteins malformation underwent surgical correction, including tricuspid valve annuloplasty in 83 patients (73.4%) and tricuspid valve replacement in 30 (5 with redo-operation). Concomitant procedure included division of the abnormal accessory conduction pathway in 8 patients.
RESULTS: The overall hospital mortality was 8.8%. The hospital mortality rate was 10.4% before 1990 and 5.5% after that time. There was a significant differen

Three cases with valve thrombosis of St. Jude Medical prosthesis (SJM valve) are reported. Incidence of valve thrombosis of SJM valve was 0.15%/patient-year. Cineradiography was useful to make the diagnosis. SJM valves were implanted with the hinges anatomically oriented in mitral position, and in both aortic and tricuspid positions with the leaflet opening parallel to the ventricular septum. Therefore, we recommend that SJM valve should be placed with the hinge antianatomically oriented in mitral position, and in both aortic and tricuspid positions with the leaflet opening to be perpendicular

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with congenital cardiac disease reaching adulthood is increasing steadily. Many adults with such disease … eptal defects (11%), tetralogy of Fallot (11%), aortic anomalies (7%), pulmonary stenosis (6%), and Ebstein anomaly (4%). Most patients were symptomatic upon presentation, with dyspnea on exertion being the most common presenting symptom. Twenty-seven patients (13%) had cyanotic CHD. Of 179 acyanotic patients, 113 (63%), and 17 of 27 cyanotic patients (63%) under …

OBJECTIVES: UK single ventricle (SV) palliation outcomes after first postnatal procedure (FPP) are well documented. However, survival determinants from fetal diagnosis to FPP are lacking. To better inform parental-fetal counselling, we examined factors favouring survival at two large UK centres.
DESIGN: Retrospective multicentre cohort study.
SETTING: Two UK congenital cardiac centres: Leeds and Birmingham.
PATIENTS: SV fetal diagnoses from 2015 to 2021.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Survival from fetal diagnosis with intention to treat (ITT) to birth and then FPP. Maternal, fetal and neonatal ri

The results of surgical treatment of 79 children with supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias refractory to medical therapy gained at the Bakulev Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery are presented in this paper. In some patients tachycardia was associated with congenital heart disease. The goal of this study was: 1. To analyse surgical results in children with different variants of such congenital cardiac pathology as pre-excitation syndrome. 2. To substantiate possible radical elimination of uncommon variants of tachyarrhythmias.

Ebstein's malformation is difficult to visualise, for both the echocardiographer and the surgeon. The essence of the problem in Ebstein's malformation is the deviation of the hingepoints of the leaflets towards the junctions of the inlet and apical trabecular parts of the right ventricle. Three-dimensional echocardiography offers new insights into the morphology and function of malformed valves, and allows elucidation of all the features. It allows clear visualisation of the valve leaflets, showing the precise morphology of the valve leaflets, the extent of their formation, the level of their

This is a report of a 10-year-old child who underwent surgery for complex congenital heart disease consisting of corrected transposition of the great vessels, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arterisus, severe left-sided atrioventricular (AV) valve insuffieicney (Ebstein's deformity) and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The site of his accessory AV connection was localized preoperatively at a left anterolateral site by isopotential body surface maps and by intracardiac electrophysiologic studies. He successfully underwent surgery for closure of the ventricular septal defect, ligation of
