Epidemiological survey of filariasis in Fujian Province, China showed that malayan filariasis, transmitted by Anopheles lesteri anthropophagus was mainly distributed in the northwest part and bancroftian filariasis with Culex quinquefasciatus as vector, in middle and south coastal regions. Both species of filariae showed typical nocturnal periodicity. Involvement of the extremities was not uncommon in malayan filariasis. In contrast, hydrocele was often present in bancroftian filariasis, in which limb impairment did not appear so frequently as in the former. Hetrazan treatment was administered

Three different formulations of Bacillus sphaericus viz, Spherimos, Vectobac and Spherifix, were evaluated for their efficacy and residual activity against Culex quinquefasciatus breeding in polluted disused wells. Spherimos, a flowable concentrate formulation, exerted 96-100% control when treated at the dosage of 10 l/ha for 17 days, whereas the effective residual activity lasted up to 67 days at 15 l/ha. In the case of Vectolex, a granular formulation, the residual activity lasted up to 56 days with the dosage of 30 l/ha and up to 66-77 days with higher dosages of 45 and 60 l/ha. The residua

Three types of in vitro released excretory, secretory and metabolic antigens of Wuchereria bancrofti third larval stage (L3ESM) are evaluated in ELISA test to detect infected individuals in the endemic area. A total of 104 reference sera are used to predict the sensitivity of these antigens. None of L3 ESM antigens, although homologous in nature, did not identify correctly the categorised reference sera. This study clearly indicated a need for defined antigens to detect W. bancrofti infection early in the endemic residents.

Nuclepore filtration is now the most widely used method of detecting microfilaremia, particularly if microfilariae are few in number. However, this system requires the blood sample to be processed promptly after collection. Using blood from Wuchereria bancrofti-infected patients, 3 solutions were tested to determine whether blood could be held for delayed processing. Of these, we identified 1, 2% formalin/10% Teepol, in which microfilaremic blood can be held for at least 9 mo without deterioration of microfilarial structure or decrease in microfilarial numbers. In addition, this mixture passed

Eighteen 2-tert-butyl-benzazole derivatives were evaluated comparatively as macrofilaricidal agents against L. carinii (L.c.), D. viteae (D.v.), B. malayi (B.m.) and B. pahangi (B.p.). Upon repeated treatment (once daily) for five consecutive days the eight benzoxazole derivatives were invariably less potent than the corresponding benzothiazole derivatives. The minimal curative dose (DCM) of the benzoxazoles varied depending on the species and on the chemical structure between 25 and 100 mg/kg p.o. once daily for five days. In the benzothiazole series the lowest DCMs were observed with compoun

The results of a 10-year follow-up of Brugia malayi microfilarial (mf) carrier rates in seven villages on Che Ju island and adjacent islets are reported; four villages initially received large-scale selective treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and three served as untreated controls. Some 90% of the total population took part in the pre-treatment blood survey and 82% of the detected mf carriers completed a course of treatment with 72 mg DEC per kg body weight over a period of 24 days.In the DEC-treated villages 92% of the mf carriers were negative one year after the treatment: the mf rate

Clinical signs of lymph node enlargement, limb edema, lymph duct fibrosis, and microfilaremia were monitored in dogs with chronic Brugia pahangi infections. During the study a single rear limb of each dog was reinfected with multiple low doses of infective larvae. The changing immune responses to parasite antigens prepared from three sources--Brugia pahangi adult worm homogenate extract, adult worm excretory-secretory products, and microfilaria excretory-secretory products--were monitored by Western blot ELISA of antigens fractionated on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresi

Microfilariae of Brugia pahangi were labelled with 125-Iodine using the reagent IODOGEN. Electron microscope autoradiographs of sections of iodinated microfilariae showed that the label was strictly confined to their sheath. Adult worms were also iodinated by the same procedure. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis of detergent extracts of radio-labelled parasites revealed components of molecular weights 113, 81-71, 46 and 33 kDa in microfilariae, and of molecular weights 29, 20 and 16 kDa in adult worms. All but the 33 kDa component of microfilariae w

Wuchereria bancrofti persists in Haiti in localized foci, discontinuously distributed. The parasite, transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus, develops in mesoendemic or hyperendemic fashion in urban and suburban areas, on the coastal plains sheltered from the prevailing winds, predominantly in the Nord department and around the gulf of La Gonave. Lymphatic filariasis is a major public health problem. Its impact is more evident in males on account of the genital repercussion of the disease. The acute lesions appear from early infancy and are related to microfilarial density. The chronic lesions b

We examined the ability of two filarial species, Onchocerca volvulus and Brugia malayi, to solubilize collagen molecules from native collagen fibrils. Collagenolytic activity was detected in extracts of adult worms, in living microfilariae of O. volvulus and in live infective larvae and adult female worms of B. malayi. Excretion-secretion factors produced in vitro by infective larvae of B. malayi also contained large amounts of collagenase. Studies with enzyme inhibitors suggest that the latter may be a metallo-protease. Antibodies to filarial collagenase were present in sera from patients wit

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis (mossy foot) is a neglected non-filarial elephantiasis considered to be caused by predisposition to cumulative contact of uncovered feet to irritative red clay soil of volcanic origins in the tropical regions. Data from structured observational studies on occurrence of Podoconiosis and related factors are not available in Kenya.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To establish the occurrence and aspects associated with Podoconiosis, a cross-sectional survey was implemented in an area located within 30 km from the foot of volcanic Mount Longonot in the Great Rift Valley in…

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is one of the most debilitating parasitic diseases worldwide, casting a shadow of socio-economic stigma over the affected underprivileged communities. The present study is a maiden investigation depicting LF prevalence in the previously unexplored remote eastern coalfield districts of West Bengal state, India during and after COVID-19 pandemic. A community-based cross-sectional survey (August 2021–March 2024) was conducted in four LF-endemic districts of West Bengal. Symptomatic cases were graded clinically, and asymptomatic infections confirmed by filaria-specific Ig

OBJECTIVES: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination efforts in Ghana have been ongoing since 2001, achieving substantial progress through mass drug administration (MDA). However, despite significant advances, LF transmission persists in certain areas. Some districts previously classified as nonendemic have reported lymphedema and hydrocele cases, raising concerns about LF endemicity. To address these gaps, a confirmatory mapping survey was conducted to reassess LF prevalence in districts with uncertain morbidity.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using the WHO-approved LF confirmatory mapping t

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) causes chronic conditions such as lymphedema and hydrocele, which require continued care to prevent disease progression and reduce the risk of secondary infections. The delivery and utilisation of lymphedema care services are shaped by various socio-economic and systemic factors. Although India has implemented the strategy of mass drug administration (MDA) across all 345 endemic districts, it still lags in the implementation of morbidity care to affected individuals. Healthcare access and treatment barriers among lymphedema patients are less explored domains. This mix

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne neglected tropical disease that causes disfiguring of the affected extremities, often leading to permanent disability and stigma. Described as a disease of poverty, the impact of socioeconomic indicators such as nutrition on LF remains largely unexplored. This cross-sectional study investigates nutritional predictors implicated in the progression of LF using machine learning methods in the Ahanta West Municipality, Ghana. There were 109 participants with a mean age of 50.72±13.8, and three-quarters being females. Only 14 (12.8%) each had comorbidit

BACKGROUND: Filarial lymphedema, caused by lymphatic filariasis, is characterized by chronic swelling and recurrent skin infections. Acute adenolymphangitis (ADL) episodes significantly exacerbate morbidity. Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases susceptibility to infections; however, the relationship between diabetes and ADL frequency and severity in filarial lymphedema patients remains unclear. This study investigated the influence of diabetes on ADL attacks and identified predictors influencing ADL episodes in patients with filarial lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Brugia malayi is the most common cause of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Indonesia. A zoophilic ecotype that infects both humans and animals occur in Belitung District in Indonesia. The district received five annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) between 2006 and 2010 and passed three transmission assessment surveys (TAS) in subsequent years. However, a survey in five villages in 2021 showed a microfilaria (Mf) prevalence of 2.1% in humans. The reappearance of B. malayi infection in humans may be due to reintroduction from animal reservoirs. The goal of this study was to de

Haiti is endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF) and malaria, two mosquito-transmitted parasitic diseases targeted for elimination. The World Health Organization recommends a transmission assessment survey (TAS-1) to determine if LF prevalence is significantly beneath putative transmission thresholds (<2% antigen prevalence in Haiti, where Culex is the primary vector for Wuchereria bancrofti) to stop mass drug administration (MDA). Repeated TASs (TAS-2 and TAS-3) are recommended at 2-3-year intervals during post-treatment surveillance. From 2017 to 2022, The Carter Center assisted the Haitian Mi

Filarial lymphedema (LE) remains a significant global problem despite the progress made toward elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF). In Ghana, the main approach to LF is preventive chemotherapy, but this has minimal impact on individuals who have already developed LE. In 2018-2020, a 24-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of stringent hygiene measures using the Essential Package of Care with or without additional administration of doxycycline (DOX) to improve filarial leg LE. This study enrolled 356 participants with LE stages 1-3
