Combination of machine learning and Raman spectroscopy for prediction of drug release in targeted drug delivery formulations.

In this research, advanced regression techniques are investigated for modeling intricate release patterns utilizing a high-dimensional dataset comprising more than 1500 spectrum-based variables and categorical inputs. The spectral data are collected from Raman spectroscopy for analysis of drug release from a solid dosage formulation coated with Polysaccharides (a high-dimensional dataset of 155 samples, with drug release measured at 2, 8, and 24 h). The considered drug is 5-aminosalicylic acid for colonic drug delivery, and its release was estimated using Raman data as inputs along with other

Histone-related gene WDR77 promotes tumor progression through cell cycle regulation in skin cutaneous melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is extremely malignant, leading to poor prognosis. Epigenetic dysregulation, particularly histone modifications, contributes to disease progression. However, effective histone-based prognostic biomarkers are still lacking in clinical practice. METHODS: Transcriptomic data from TCGA-SKCM and five GEO datasets were analyzed. Ten machine learning algorithms were integrated to build 101 prognostic models. The optimal model, based on seven histone-related genes, showed the highest C-index and was validated in both training and validation cohorts. WDR77 wa

A New Approach for Chagas Disease Screening Using Serum Infrared Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Algorithms.

Chagas disease (CD) affects an estimated 6-7 million people worldwide, predominantly in Latin America. However, migration has expanded its geographic reach. Diagnosing chronic CD is challenging due to low parasitemia and the limitations of existing serological assays. This study evaluates the diagnostic potential of attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with machine learning (ML). A total of 100 serum samples (49 CD-positive, 51 negative controls) were analyzed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy under two conditions: (i) dry analysis (air-dried sampl

Maternal epigenetic index links early neglect to later neglectful care and other psychopathological, cognitive, and bonding effects.

BACKGROUND: Past experiences of maltreatment and life adversity induce DNA methylation changes in adults, but less is known about their impact on mothers' maladaptive neglectful parenting and its negative effects. We performed an epigenome-wide association study to investigate the role of DNA methylation levels in mothers with neglectful care, who were exposed to childhood maltreatment and neglect, and their current negative effects. Saliva DNA methylation was determined with the Illumina Human Methylation EPIC BeadChip v1. The individual epigenome was the input to a machine learning algorithm

Machine learning-based assessment of regional-scale variation of landslide susceptibility in central Vietnam.

Recurrent landslide events triggered by typhoons and tropical storms over Vietnam pose a longstanding threat to the nation's population and infrastructure. Changes in hydroclimatic conditions, especially the growing intensity and frequency of storms, have elevated landslide susceptibility in many parts of the country. This research examines the spatio-temporal variations in landslide susceptibility across central Vietnam over several years, using multi-temporal landslide inventories from Typhoon Ketsana (2009), Tropical Storm Podul (2013), and Typhoon Molave (2020). Additionally, the research

Machine learning to predict completion of treatment for pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy enhances survival rates for pancreatic cancer (PC) patients postsurgery, yet less than 60% complete adjuvant therapy, with a smaller fraction undergoing neoadjuvant treatment. Our study aimed to predict which patients would complete pre- or postoperative chemotherapy through machine learning (ML). METHODS: Patients with resectable PC identified in our institutional pancreas database were grouped into two categories: those who completed all intended treatments (i.e., surgery plus either neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy), and those who did not. We applied logistic r

TISBE: A Public Web Platform for the Consensus-Based Explainable Prediction of Developmental Toxicity.

Despite being extremely relevant for the protection of prenatal and neonatal health, the developmental toxicity (Dev Tox) is a highly complex endpoint whose molecular rationale is still largely unknown. The lack of availability of high-quality data as well as robust nontesting methods makes its understanding even more difficult. Thus, the application of new explainable alternative methods is of utmost importance, with Dev Tox being one of the most animal-intensive research themes of regulatory toxicology. The contribution of typhoon local and remote forcings to storm surge along the Makou-Dahengqin tidal reach of Pearl River Estuary.

Due to the interaction between upstream discharge and astronomical tides in tidal reaches, the typhoon-induced storm surge processes are quite different from that in other coastal regions. Investigating the contributions of driving factors is essential to deepen the understanding of storm surges in tidal reaches. In this study, a coupled hydrological-hydrodynamic storm surge model is first developed to explore the main driving factors of storm surges in Makou-Dahengqin tidal reach during the three most influential typhoon events (Hagupit, Hato and Mangkhut). After that, the machine learning me
