Tannic acid, total, complexed and ionized fluoride, calcium, total phosphate, zinc, aluminium, copper, iron, mercury and manganese were determined in infusions prepared from some or all of 30 brands of tea. Mercury and copper were not detected. Significant positive correlations were observed between fluoride, aluminium and manganese. The low reactivity of fluoride in tea infusions with powdered hydroxyapatite compared with that in dilute sodium fluoride solutions may be in part explained by the presence of aluminium and manganese.

26 women were treated for osteoporosis with 40 mg of sodium fluoride twice a day (equivalent 36 mg of fluorine) for a longer period. The data from the Wayne County study indicate that administration of fluoride tablets in school should be recommended in nonfluoridated areas as an effective public health measure for the prevention of dental caries. The finding that benefits persist for at least 1 1/2 years after treatment is discontinued further accentuates the public health appeal of the procedure. As the data show no clear-cut superiority in posttreatment benefits for two fluoride tablets a day, a single tablet daily can be recommended as more suitable for school programs because of lower cost and greater feasibility.

A cerium-modified red mud adsorbent (Ce-RM) was prepared from industrial red mud waste by acid activation, cerium-salt treatment and calcination, and applied to fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption tests examined the effects of initial fluoride concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and coexisting ions.
