Substance abuse, chronic sorrow, and mothering loss: relapse triggers among female victims of child abuse.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore chronic sorrow as a relapse trigger among female victims of child abuse seeking treatment for substance abuse relapse. Social and professional support needs of families after perinatal loss.

Perinatal loss has been associated with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, suicide, marital conflict, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Nurses may provide professional support through teaching, role modeling, encouragement, counseling, problem solving, and other interventions. Nurses also may encourage more effective social support by helping significant others to provide willing, well-intentioned action that will produce a positive response in the bereaved couple. Interventions to increase professional and social support after perinatal loss are described.

A.E. Bennett award paper. Experimental approaches to human stress research: assessment of neurobiological mechanisms of stress in volunteers and psychiatric patients.

This article presents a series of experiments that involves the development of three novel strategies for human stress research and the utilization of these strategies to examine neurobehavioral processes of stress in healthy volunteers, schizophrenia, and affective illness. The first strategy involved intravenous 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) administration, a glucoprivic stressor. We found that glucoprivic stress results in dissociation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA), adrenomedullary, and sympathoneural activity. In addition, glucoprivic stress in neuroleptic-treated schizophrenic patient

The family with a handicapped child: a review of the literature.

Research is reviewed on the impact of a handicapped child on the family. While most authors agree that the presence of such a child is a family stressor, there have been few studies using control groups, analytical methods, representative samples, or adequate numbers. The wide age range of the children within and across studies and the diversity of populations confuse some issues and leave others unresolved. In addition, no instrument has been designed to measure specifically the stress in families of a handicapped child. Most authors have not taken into account the dynamic process of rearing
