Dual-energy CT-based assessment of the trabecular bone in vertebrae.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis can cause severe fractures of bone structures. One important indicator for pathology is a lowered bone mineral density (BMD) - conventionally assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Dual-energy CT (DECT) - being an alternative that is increasingly used in the clinics - allows the computation of the spatial BMD distribution. OBJECTIVES: Using DECT, the trabecular bone of vertebrae is examined. Several analysis methods for revealing the bone density distribution as well as appropriate visualization methods for detecting regions of lowered BMD are needed for

Comparative evaluation of postreduction intra-articular distal radial fractures by radiographs and multidetector computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography can be an adjunct to radiographs when evaluating intra-articular fractures of the distal part of the radius. Acute-phase multidetector computed tomography has better temporal, spatial, and contrast resolution than a conventional scanner has. The aim of this study was to determine prospectively whether the addition of a multidetector computed tomography scan (with various reconstructions) results in changes in the evaluation of intra-articular distal radial fractures and thus changes in the plans for further management. METHODS: Radiographs and multidetector com

MDCT coronary angiography for diagnosis of anomalous origin right coronary artery: a case report.

This is a case report of anomalous origin of the right coronary artery, which arises from the left sinus of Valsalva depicted with multi-detector row tomography (MDCT) coronary angiography performed in emergency. In symptomatic patient, this anomalous origin is considered a malignant anomaly and needs urgent surgical treatment. Some studies demonstrated that MDCT is a reliable non-invasive technique to identify and define anomalous coronary arteries (ACAs) and their course.

Automated image-matching technique for comparative diagnosis of the liver on CT examination.

When interpreting enhanced computer tomography (CT) images of the upper abdomen, radiologists visually select a set of images of the same anatomical positions from two or more CT image series (i.e., non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced CT images at arterial and delayed phase) to depict and to characterize any abnormalities. The same process is also necessary to create subtraction images by computer. We have developed an automated image selection system using a template-matching technique that allows the recognition of image sets at the same anatomical position from two CT image series. Using the

Using deep learning for estimation of time-since-injury in pediatric accidental fractures.

BACKGROUND: Estimating time-since-injury of healing fractures is imprecise, encompassing excessively wide timeframes. Most injured children are evaluated at non-children's hospitals, yet pediatric radiologists can disagree with up to one in six skeletal imaging interpretations from referring community hospitals. There is a need to improve image interpretation by considering additional methods for fracture dating. OBJECTIVE: To train and validate deep learning models to correctly estimate the age of pediatric accidental long bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This secondary data analysis

Detection of Perlger-Huet anomaly based on augmented fast marching method and speeded up robust features.

Pelger-Huet anomaly (PHA) and Pseudo Pelger-Huet anomaly (PPHA) are neutrophil with abnormal morphology. They have the bilobed or unilobed nucleus and excessive clumping chromatin. Currently, detection of this kind of cell mainly depends on the manual microscopic examination by a clinician, thus, the quality of detection is limited by the efficiency and a certain subjective consciousness of the clinician. In this paper, a detection method for PHA and PPHA is proposed based on karyomorphism and chromatin distribution features. Firstly, the skeleton of the nucleus is extracted using an augmented

Chylopericardium: a case report demonstrating utility of lymphography combined with 3D computed tomography for corrective surgical treatment using VATS.

We present a case of a 58 year-old woman with primary chylopericardium associated with chylothorax. Chylopericardium is a condition in which chylous fluid containing a high concentration of triglycerides accumulates in the pericardial cavity, and it can form for many different reasons. 3D computed tomography with lymphography precisely depicted the specific location of the lymphatic leak in this patient, which was successfully repaired using targeted video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

CCD camera detection of HIV infection.

Rapid and precise quantification of the infectivity of HIV is important for molecular virologic studies, as well as for measuring the activities of antiviral drugs and neutralizing antibodies. An indicator cell line, a CCD camera, and image-analysis software were used to quantify HIV infectivity. The cells of the P4R5 line, which express the receptors for HIV infection as well as beta-galactosidase under the control of the HIV-1 long terminal repeat, were infected with HIV and then stained 2 days later with X-gal to turn the infected cells blue. Digital images of monolayers of the infected cel

Aplasia cutis congenita of the scalp with large underlying skull defect: a case report.

Localised agenesis of the scalp is the most frequent pattern in aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), a congenital absence of the skin and occasionally of deeper layers. Several clinical groups are characterised by the location and pattern of skin defects, associated malformations and the mode of inheritance. Death occurs in 20% of cases, secondary to the associated anomalies, to infections or to haemorrhage from ulceration of the sagittal sinus when there is also a defect of the underlying skull. In this latter case, we close the defect by two rotational scalp flaps (Orticochea technique) at birth.

Dose reduction in 64-row whole-body CT in multiple trauma: an optimized CT protocol with iterative image reconstruction on a gemstone-based scintillator.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of potential dose savings by implementing adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR) on a gemstone-based scintillator in a clinical 64-row whole-body CT (WBCT) protocol after multiple trauma. METHODS: Dose reports of 152 WBCT scans were analysed for two 64-row multidetector CT scanners (Scanners A and B); the main scanning parameters were kept constant. ASiR and a gemstone-based scintillator were used in Scanner B, and the noise index was adjusted (head: 5.2 vs 6.0; thorax/abdomen: 29.0 vs 46.0). The scan length, CT dose index (CTDI) and dose-length product (DL

Artificial intelligence in cytopathology: a review of the literature and overview of commercial landscape.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made impressive strides recently in interpreting complex images, thanks to improvements in deep learning techniques and increasing computational power. Researchers have started applying these advanced techniques to pathology images, although most efforts have been focused on histopathology. Cytopathology, however, remains the original field of pathology for which AI models for clinical use were successfully commercialized, to assist with automating Papanicolaou test screening. Recent AI efforts have focused on whole slide images of both gynecologic and non-gyne

Optimization of image quality and radiation dose in low-dose pediatric chest CT Using 80 kVp acquisition and variable ASiR-V reconstruction: A retrospective comparative study.

Radiation dose reduction in pediatric chest computed tomography (CT) is crucial because of increased radiosensitivity and potential long-term cancer risk. Low tube voltage combined with iterative reconstruction can reduce radiation exposure; however, the optimal reconstruction strength that balances image quality and diagnostic acceptability remains unclear. In addition, evidence remains limited regarding the optimal ASiR-V blending level in pediatric low-dose chest CT, particularly when subjective image quality, objective metrics, and radiation dose are evaluated together. This retrospective

Automatic segmentation of intra-cochlear anatomy in post-implantation CT of unilateral cochlear implant recipients.

A cochlear implant (CI) is a neural prosthetic device that restores hearing by directly stimulating the auditory nerve using an electrode array that is implanted in the cochlea. In CI surgery, the surgeon accesses the cochlea and makes an opening where he/she inserts the electrode array blind to internal structures of the cochlea. Because of this, the final position of the electrode array relative to intra-cochlear anatomy is generally unknown. We have recently developed an approach for determining electrode array position relative to intra-cochlear anatomy using a pre- and a post-implantation

Pleural nodule identification in low-dose and thin-slice lung computed tomography.

A completely automated system for the identification of pleural nodules in low-dose and thin-slice computed tomography (CT) of the lung has been developed. The directional-gradient concentration method has been applied to the pleura surface and combined with a morphological opening-based procedure to generate a list of nodule candidates. Each nodule candidate is characterized by 12 morphological and textural features, which are analyzed by a rule-based filter and a neural classifier. This detection system has been developed and validated on a dataset of 42 annotated CT scans. The k-fold cross
