Machine Learning to Prioritize High-Severity Patient Safety Events for Institutional Investigation: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety events (PSEs) are preventable incidents that cause, or have the potential to cause, harm to patients during their medical journey. Although incident reporting systems capture large volumes of such events, only a small proportion undergo comprehensive investigation due to the resource-intensive nature of the review process. Patient safety specialists are tasked with triaging PSEs to prioritize high-severity cases that warrant timely institutional investigation; however, the rapidly increasing volume of events has made manual triage increasingly impractical. OBJECTIVE

Detecting Misspelled Drug Names Using Transformer-Based Language Models: Model Development and External Validation.

BACKGROUND: Misspellings in medication names can compromise patient safety, reduce data utility, and impede large-scale data initiatives that integrate medication information from electronic health records (EHRs). Existing methods for detecting misspelled medical terms are mostly dictionary-based and can lead to high false-positive rates when correctly spelled but previously unseen (out-of-vocabulary) terms are encountered. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate domain-specific, transformer-based language models for detecting misspelled drug names, with an emphasis on performance for uns

Evaluation of an AI Medical Scribe After 236,153 Notes Generated Across Care Levels in a European Health System: Mixed Methods Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians spend a substantial share of their working hours on documentation, contributing to workflow inefficiencies, reduced patient-facing time, and increased burnout. Artificial intelligence (AI) medical scribes have emerged as a promising solution to reduce this burden, yet real-world evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, and data from European health systems are especially scarce. This evaluation combines 2 complementary data sources: objective editing metadata from 236,153 notes generated by 1295 clinicians, describing operational editing behavior within the AI medical

Biological feature-based machine learning in histopathological images: a systematic review.

Digital pathology has recently led to significant advancements in the field of microscopic image analysis, particularly regarding the increasing use of Deep Learning methods. These models represent the state-of-the-art in histopathological slide analysis, but Deep Learning features remain difficult to interpret, despite recent developments in post hoc explainability frameworks. In contrast, features extracted from biological objects-such as nuclei, cells or tissues-are supposed to be more grounded in pathologists' a priori knowledge. Accordingly, Machine Learning based on handcrafted features

Graph-augmented LLMs for social media-based clinical trial recruitment.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical trials (CTs) are essential for advancing disease diagnosis and treatment; however, recruiting eligible participants remains a major bottleneck. Existing recruitment strategies, such as advertisements and electronic health record-based screening, are often time-consuming and inefficient. Social networks provide a promising alternative source for identifying potential participants, but this direction remains underexplored because user information is sparse and current methods make limited use of interaction structure. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose a framew

The Orphanet Nomenclature and Classification of Rare Diseases for Improved Patient Recognition and Data Interoperability: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although individually uncommon, rare diseases (RDs) collectively affect an estimated 329-624 million people worldwide. There are over 6500 known RDs, 85% of which affect fewer than 1 person per million. Consequently, the critical amount of data necessary to improve knowledge, care, and treatment can only be achieved through cumulative data collection across countries. However, RDs remain underrepresented in medical terminologies and classification systems, hindering data sharing, interoperability, and public health monitoring. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the Orphanet Nomenclatu
