Factors that influence participation in physical activity for people with bipolar disorder: a synthesis of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems contribute significantly to the overall disease burden worldwide and are major causes of disability, suicide, and ischaemic heart disease. People with bipolar disorder report lower levels of physical activity than the general population, and are at greater risk of chronic health conditions including cardiovascular disease and obesity. These contribute to poor health outcomes. Physical activity has the potential to improve quality of life and physical and mental well-being. OBJECTIVES: To identify the factors that influence participation in physical activity

Resistance Exercise and Peer Support with Bands/Balls and Digitally-based Supervision: (REPS w/BANDS): a feasibility study for women with PCOS.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is a first-line treatment for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, research findings reveal that women with PCOS report low exercise motivation due to PCOS stigma-related stress and lack of social connection, inhibiting exercise in public and group settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of an in-home resistance exercise program supervised in real time by personal trainers using smart home video devices (SHVDs) with peer support through a buddy system. METHODS: This one-arm feasibility study incorporated strateg

Factors Influencing Health Behavior Adherence in Young and Middle-Aged Stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND: Health behavior adherence (HBA) is important for effective rehabilitation and secondary prevention after stroke. Young and middle-aged patients may face particular challenges in maintaining recommended health behaviors during hospitalization because of functional impairment, cognitive deficits, pain, and competing social or occupational responsibilities. However, factors associated with HBA in this population remain insufficiently characterized, and practical tools for the early identification of patients at risk of suboptimal adherence are limited. To identify factors associated w

Evaluating psychiatric conference posters: Benchmarking a custom generative pre-trained transformer against human inter-rater variability using a structured assessment framework.

BACKGROUND: Scientific poster assessment lacks standardized and discipline-neutral rubrics. Assessment by human reviewers (HRs) is subject to inter-rater variability. AIM: To assess PA²IRS (Poster Assessment via AI-Integrated Rubric System) framework for AI-assisted psychiatric poster evaluation, and conducted a reliability study comparing AI and HR agreement. METHODS: PA²IRS was developed through an AI-assisted iterative criterion refinement process modelled on Delphi principles. Sixty posters (30-case reports/series [CR], 20 original research [OR], 10-systematic review-Meta-analysis [SRMA]

Alberta family integrated careTM: a review of a family-integrated care model in neonatal intensive care.

Alberta Family Integrated CareTM (AB-FICareTM) is a standardized, theory-driven model that integrates parents as primary caregivers in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs); however, its clinical effectiveness, implementation determinants, and cross-setting applicability require systematic synthesis. This narrative review aims to evaluate the evidence on AB-FICareTM in Level II NICUs, focusing on neonatal and parental outcomes, implementation barriers and facilitators, and transferability to healthcare systems with distinct organizational and cultural contexts. Following SANRA guidelines, we s

Development and Validation of Models to Estimate the Incident Risk of Cognitive Impairment and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines emphasize using atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk prediction models for treatment decisions, but risk of cognitive impairment is an equally important concern in older adults. Current ASCVD risk prediction models were derived in younger adults and do not include holistic measures of health or predict cognitive impairment. METHODS: We utilized data from the Framingham, Framingham Offspring, CHS (Cardiovascular Health Study), and ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) cohorts to derive and validate 2 Selective Functional Prediction models to estimate

Cross-speciality collaborative care in complex immune-mediated inflammatory diseases: treating the person living with the condition.

BACKGROUND: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are a wide group of autoimmune conditions that share common inflammatory pathways, meaning that people with one IMID are at elevated risk of developing another. People living with IMIDs are at increased risk of co-morbidities and quality of life (QOL) is negatively impacted. The economic cost of IMIDs is high both in terms of healthcare resource and lost productivity. In particular, there is significant unmet need in terms of clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction for people living with complex IMID (multiple IMIDs, co-morbidities a

Understanding challenges in healthcare access: qualitative insights from healthcare providers and people living in socio-economically vulnerable circumstances.

INTRODUCTION: Equitable access to healthcare is fundamental to improving population health outcomes, yet persistent disparities leave many underserved, particularly those in socio-economically vulnerable circumstances. In Belgium, unmet healthcare needs are disproportionately concentrated among low-income groups, migrants and individuals with low educational attainment. These structural inequities are reflected in poorer health outcomes, including reduced life expectancy and limited access to essential services such as dental, mental, and specialist care. Existing research has primarily taken

Advancing prevention and screening in younger adults living with low income: development, piloting and acceptability/appropriateness evaluation of A BETTER Life.

BACKGROUND: In the original BETTER (Building on Existing Tools to Improve Chronic Disease Prevention and Screening in Primary Care) intervention, a "Prevention Practitioner" meets with a participant aged 40-65 years to improve their uptake of prevention activities (e.g. cancer screening, physical activity). The BETTER intervention was found to be effective in a randomised control trial. We adapted BETTER to focus on a younger age group (adults aged 18-39 years) living with low income, a group known to have a higher prevalence of preventable cancers and chronic diseases than their higher-income

Prophylactic pectoralis major flap to compensate for increased risk of pharyngocutaneous fistula in laryngectomy patients with low skeletal muscle mass (PECTORALIS): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Total laryngectomy (TL) is a surgical procedure commonly performed on patients with advanced laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma. One of the most common postoperative complications following TL is the development of a pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF), characterized by a communication between the neopharynx and the skin. PCF can lead to extended hospital stays, delayed oral feeding, and compromised quality of life. The use of a myofascial pectoralis major flap (PMMF) as an onlay technique during pharyngeal closure has shown potential in reducing PCF rates in high risk patients for

Physician-brief advice for promoting smoking cessation among cancer patients on treatment in low and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Physician-brief advice has been utilized in high-income countries to promote smoking cessation among cancer patients. Empirical evidence on its effectiveness among cancer patients in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is lacking. The gap could be due to inadequate training, and competing healthcare priorities, leading to insufficient implementation of targeted smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. We undertook this scoping review to determine if physician-brief advice is effective in promoting smoking cessation among cancer patients in LMICs. METHODS: We con

Development of a complex Interdisciplinary Nurse-coordinated SELf-MAnagement (INSELMA) intervention for patients with inflammatory arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Apart from a consistent focus on treating inflammation, patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA) report a range of unmet needs. Many experience not only residual symptoms but also various other physical, psychological, and social effects. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a complex Interdisciplinary Nurse-coordinated self-management (INSELMA) intervention for patients with IA, as an add-on treatment to usual outpatient care for those with substantial disease impact. METHODS: This study followed the British Medical Research Council's updated framework for developing complex i

The outcome of revision total hip arthroplasty for instability.

AIMS: Instability is a common indication for revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, even after the initial revision, some patients continue to have recurrent dislocation. The aim of this study was to assess the risk for recurrent dislocation after revision THA for instability. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2019, 163 patients underwent revision THA for instability at Stanford University Medical Center. Of these, 33 (20.2%) required re-revision due to recurrent dislocation. Cox proportional hazard models, with death and re-revision surgery for periprosthetic infection as competing events,

Sex differences in predictors for cognitive decline and dementia in people with stroke or transient ischemic attack in the PROGRESS trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke and transient ischemic attack confer greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia. AIMS: We used data from the Perindopril Protection Against Recurrent Stroke Study (PROGRESS), a blood pressure-lowering randomized controlled trial in stroke/transient ischemic attack. We evaluated overall and sex-specific differences in treatment effects for cognitive decline/dementia, as well as associations with vascular and stroke-specific predictors, considering death as a competing risk. METHODS: Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate overall and sex-specific odds ratios

Simulated versus traditional occupational therapy placements: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Professional practise placements in occupational therapy education are critical to ensuring graduate competence. Australian occupational therapy accreditation standards allow up to 200 of a mandated 1000 placement hours to include simulation-based learning. There is, however, minimal evidence about the effectiveness of simulation-based placements compared to traditional placements in occupational therapy. We evaluated whether occupational therapy students completing a 40 hour (one week block) Simulated Clinical Placement (SCP) attained non-inferior learning outcomes to students

[Parental alienation, child psychological abuse and DSM-5].

Psychiatric experts find it is easier to deal with more horrible crimes than highly conflictual divorces. In the former, projections are impossible and "files" raise very interesting issues with regard to criminology; in contrast, in the latter the expert is confronted not just with a family but also and lest one forget, a couple that at one point in time had loved each other. However, the separation resembles a bloodbath. We will not detail the various psychiatric pathologies, which may further complicate a separation: they are well-known and, on a procedural level, do not raise any specific

An equivalence evaluation of a nurse-moderated group-based internet support program for new mothers versus standard care: a pragmatic preference randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: All mothers in South Australia are offered a clinic or home-visit by a Child and Family Health community nurse in the initial postnatal weeks. Subsequent support is available on request from staff in community clinics and from a telephone helpline. The aim of the present study is to compare equivalence of a single clinic-based appointment plus a nurse-moderated group-based internet intervention when infants were aged 0-6 months versus a single home-visit together with subsequent standard services (the latter support was available to mothers in both study groups). METHODS/DESIGN: T

[Psychological situation of home care patients in the Federal Republic of Germany].

The demographic development, advances in medicine and also the increase in AIDS and paraplegia at an early age means that we must assume approximately two million people in Germany requiring care and attention or nursing on a longterm basis. Object of the explorative pilot-study is to analyse the conditions for mental well-being in the case of homecare patients and the influence on behaviour, enjoyment of life and the quality of their hopes for the future. In the study two comparable random surveys have been examined in all their demographic and medical characteristics: (1) homecare patients (

Psychological aspects of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

There is little information on the psychologic aspects of HED. In particular, there is insufficient evidence to support or dispute the claim that the intelligence of persons with HED is dissimilar to that of the general population. Impressions of frequent mental retardation may arise from patients suffering brain damage following high fever and from our biases against the physically unattractive. A small number of adults with HED have been reported to hold a relatively wide range of jobs, and an even smaller number have been reported with educational and occupational achievement that is predic
