Unilateral thalamic Vim and GPi stimulation for the treatment of Holmes' tremor caused by midbrain cavernoma: case report and review of the literature.

A 30-year-old man with brainstem cavernoma experienced hemorrhage and was operated in 2008. Six months after the operation, the patient presented with new complaints of left arm tremor namely Holmes' tremor. Neurological examination also revealed left-sided internuclear ophthalmoplegia, left-sided mild paresis, and increased deep tendon reflexes of the left upper extremity, truncal ataxia, and dysarthria. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a postoperative cavity and gliosis at the level of the superior and inferior colliculus in the right tegmentum and right red nucleus with extension to

Transgenic mice with chronic NGF deprivation and Alzheimer's disease-like pathology display hippocampal region-specific impairments in short- and long-term plasticities.

The etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains elusive. The "amyloid" hypothesis states that toxic action of accumulated β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) on synaptic function causes AD cognitive decline. This hypothesis is supported by analysis of familial AD (FAD)-based transgenic mouse models, where altered amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing leads to Aβ accumulation correlating with hippocampal-dependent memory deficits. Some studies report prominent dentate gyrus (DG) glutamatergic plasticity alterations in these mice, while CA1 plasticity remains relatively unaffected. The "neurotrophic un

Recurrent perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage during antithrombotic therapy.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with non-aneurysmal perimesencephalic hemorrhage, spontaneous rebleeding does not occur. The lack of reported recurrences may lead to less cautious administration of antithrombotic therapy. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 57-year-old woman with a perimesencephalic pattern of hemorrhage and negative CT angiography was treated with carbasalate calcium and intravenous heparin because of an acute coronary syndrome. Three days after installment of this antithrombotic therapy she experienced a recurrent perimesencephalic hemorrhage leading to hydrocephalus and a decrease

Primary germinoma arising from the midbrain.

A 29-year-old man presented with diplopia, dysarthria, anisocoria, oculomotor nerve paralysis, abducens nerve paralysis, right facial palsy, and spastic hemiparetic gait. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a homogenously enhanced mass in the midbrain. MRI-guided stereotactic biopsy was performed, and the histologic diagnosis was pure germinoma. The tumor disappeared after chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Germinoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of midbrain lesions in young adults. MRI-guided stereotactic biopsy provided a helpful diagnostic clue in a patient with a midbrai

Cell type-specific gene expression of midbrain dopaminergic neurons reveals molecules involved in their vulnerability and protection.

Molecular differences between dopamine (DA) neurons may explain why the mesostriatal DA neurons in the A9 region preferentially degenerate in Parkinson's disease (PD) and toxic models, whereas the adjacent A10 region mesolimbic and mesocortical DA neurons are relatively spared. To characterize innate physiological differences between A9 and A10 DA neurons, we determined gene expression profiles in these neurons in the adult mouse by laser capture microdissection, microarray analysis and real-time PCR. We found 42 genes relatively elevated in A9 DA neurons, whereas 61 genes were elevated in A10

Ubiquitin immunoreactivity in the midbrain as a marker of stress to motor nervous systems in fatal injury.

Previous studies showed an increase in the ubiquitin (Ub)-immunoreactive structures in the midbrain in acute deaths from asphyxiation and in fires in adult subjects. The present study examined the Ub-immunoreactivity in the midbrain as a marker of stress to motor nervous systems in fatal injury cases (over 35 years of age, n=140: blunt injuries, n=82; sharp injuries, n=58), compared with that in control groups (n=61) including death by strangulation, acute cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases. The intranuclear Ub-immunopositive inclusion of the pigmented dopaminergic neurons of the substantia

Sex difference in septal neurons projecting axons to midbrain central gray in rats: a combined double retrograde tracing and ER-immunohistochemical study.

Sex difference in the number of neurons projecting axons from the lateral septum (LS) to the midbrain central gray (MCG) that are concerned with the lordosis-inhibiting system was investigated by injection of Fluoro-Gold (FG), a retrograde tracer, into the rostral MCG on the right side in male and female rats. Immunohistochemistry for ER-alpha and -beta was also performed with or without combination with FG immunostaining. All animals were gonadectomized. Lordosis was observed after treatment with E2 in some animals. In the results, lordosis was rare in males, compared with females. FG-immunor

Effect of nitric oxide in the nucleus isthmi on the hypoxic and hypercarbic drive to breathing of toads.

Nucleus isthmi (NI) is a mesencephalic structure of the amphibian brain that has been reported to participate in CO(2) chemoreception and in the ventilatory response to hypoxia. However, no information exists about the modulators and/or mediators involved. In the present study, we assessed the participation of nitric oxide (NO) in the hypoxic and hypercarbic drive to breathing, specifically in the NI. We compared the ventilatory and cardiovascular responses with hypoxia and hypercarbia after microinjecting 100 nmol/0.5 microliter of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; an NO synthase bl

Immunocytochemical distribution of corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor type-1 (CRF(1))-like immunoreactivity in the mouse brain: light microscopy analysis using an antibody directed against the C-terminus.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) receptor type 1 (CRF(1)) is a member of the receptor family mediating the effects of CRH, a critical neuromediator of stress-related endocrine, autonomic, and behavioral responses. The detailed organization and fine localization of CRF(1)-like immunoreactivity (CRF(1)-LI) containing neurons in the rodent have not been described, and is important to better define the functions of this receptor. Here we characterize in detail the neuroanatomical distribution of CRF(1)-immunoreactive (CRF(1)-ir) neurons in the mouse brain, using an antiserum directed against

Expanding lacunae causing triventricular hydrocephalus. Report of two cases.

Two patients are reported in whom the presence of triventricular hydrocephalus and aqueductal obstruction or stenosis due to multiple expanding lacunae in the mesencephalothalamic region possibly corresponds to abnormally dilated perivascular spaces. Placement of a ventriculoperitoneal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt in one patient and the performance of a third ventricle cisternotomy in the other reversed the hydrocephalic syndrome, but did not modify the complex neuroophthalmological disturbance and rubral tremor presumably related to the compressive effects of the lacunae on adjacent parenc

Patterns of brainstem projection to the thalamic reticular nucleus.

To understand better how the brainstem may influence thalamocortical activity, we have examined the projection patterns of different brainstem nuclei to the thalamic reticular nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of biotinylated dextran were made into various nuclei of the brainstem (superior colliculus, periaqueductal grey matter, parabrachial nucleus, pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, and locus coeruleus) of Sprague-Dawley rats by using stereotaxic coordinates. Our results show that afferents from each brainstem nucleus

Localization of traumatic oculomotor nerve palsy to the midbrain exit site by magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: To present the magnetic resonance imaging findings for a patient with traumatic oculomotor nerve injury. METHODS: We examined a patient with a right pupil-involving oculomotor nerve palsy after severe closed head trauma. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated marked signal hypointensity on gradient-echo T2*-weighted images consistent with hemorrhage at the midbrain exit site of the right oculomotor nerve. CONCLUSIONS: Distal fascicular damage or partial rootlet avulsion is a mechanism of injury in some traumatic oculomotor nerve palsies. Gradient-echo T2*-wei

Centrally-administered AMPA antagonists increase locomotion in parkinsonian rats.

It was shown in the present study that three antagonists of the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid (AMPA) glutamate receptor, including 2,3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-7-sulfamoylbenzo(f)quinoxaline (NBQX), 1-(4-aminophenyl)-4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-5H-2,3-benzodiazepine (GYKI 52466) and 6-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)-7-nitro-2,3-(1H, 4H)-quinoxalinedione (YM90K), caused marked reversal of akinesia when administered into the entopeduncular nucleus of rats rendered parkinsonian by bilateral substantia nigra pars compacta lesion. These data suggest that centrally active AMPA antagonists ma

Perimesencephalic and nonperimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhages with negative angiograms.

BACKGROUND: van Gijn and co-workers identified "Perimesencephalic haemorrhage" (PM) as distinct, benign, non-aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. However, there is only one retrospective series of this entity outside the Netherlands. PURPOSE: to confirm (or not) the benign nature of perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage by evaluating its clinical course and long-term follow-up in a consecutive series of patients admitted to a University Hospital. METHODS: Patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and negative cerebral angiography admitted between January 1985 and April 1992 were classified

Fos induction by nerve growth factor in the adult rat brain.

The distribution of Fos, the protein product of the immediate early gene c-fos, was studied with immunocytochemistry in the adult male rat brain after nerve growth factor (NGF) administration. NGF was injected in the lateral cerebral ventricle through a previously implanted cannula. The total number of Fos-immunoreactive (ir) neurons in the brain was 2-3 times higher after NGF administration than in control animals (untreated or injected with cytochrome c). With respect to control rats, in the NGF-treated cases Fos-ir cells were more numerous in the anterior olfactory nucleus, in the medial pr

Focal midbrain tumors in children.

The clinical and neuroradiological features of focal midbrain tumors in 12 children are described, and the results of their surgical management are presented. Patients with a focal midbrain tumor usually exhibit either symptoms and signs of raised intracranial pressure caused by an obstructive hydrocephalus (50%) or symptoms and signs caused by pressure on the tegmentum and cerebral peduncles. The lesions are confined to the tectal plate or tegmentum with possible extension upward to the thalamus and downward to the pons, displacing but not invading these structures. The edges of the tumor are

Characteristics of midbrain control of spinal nociceptive neurons and nonsomatosensory parameters in the pentobarbital-anesthetized rat.

1. GABAergic mechanisms in the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) have been proposed to control the activity of descending antinociceptive systems and defensive behavior. Here, the effect of neuronal disinhibition by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptor blockade at midbrain sites on spinal neuronal responses to noxious and innocuous skin stimulation was quantitatively characterized. It was compared with the effect of direct neuronal excitation by glutamate microinjections or electrical stimulation at identical sites. Changes in mean arterial blood pressure and other nonsomatosensory respon
