Seatbelt and helmet depiction on the big screen blockbuster injury prevention messages?

BACKGROUND: Injuries from vehicle crashes are a major cause of death among American youth. Many of these injuries are worsened because of noncompliant safety practices. Messages delivered by mass media are omnipresent in young peoples' lives and influence their behavior patterns. In this investigation, we analyzed seat belt and helmet messages from a sample of top-grossing motion pictures with emphasis on scene context and character demographics. METHODS: Content analysis of 50 top-grossing motion pictures for years 2000 to 2004, with coding for seat belt and helmet usage by trained media cod

Impact of helmets on injuries to riders of all-terrain vehicles.

BACKGROUND: Although helmet use has been shown to be effective in reducing traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) due to motorcycle and bicycle crashes, it is unknown whether helmet use is associated with different injury patterns and severity for users of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). OBJECTIVES: To compare likelihood of injury and death between helmeted and unhelmeted riders of ATVs. METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank for years 2002-2006 was used to examine the records of 11 589 patients hospitalized for injuries resulting from ATV use. The likelihood of receiving a TBI diagnosis or a signific

[Scaphoid fracture in motocross riders].

Motocross racing is a demanding motorcycling discipline with significant physiological and psychological demands. Upper extremity injuries are frequently encountered. Interestingly, motocross riders present with a significantly stronger left arm, even if the left hand is not dominant. This difference is attributed to the use of the clutch lever with the left hand, which is more frequent in motocross than in Enduro or desert rally. The wrist has been reported to be involved especially among motocross racers in contrast to road racing. Besides wrist fractures, scaphoid fractures have been previo

Perils of rib fractures.

Rib fractures (RF) are noted in 4 to 12 per cent of trauma admissions. To define RF risks at a Level 1 trauma center, investigators conducted a 10-year (1995-2004) retrospective analysis of all trauma patients. Blunt chest trauma was seen in 13 per cent (1,475/11,533) of patients and RF in 808 patients (55% blunt chest trauma, 7% blunt trauma). RF were observed in 26 per cent of children (< 18 years), 56 per cent of adults (18-64 years), and 65 per cent of elderly patients (> or = 65 years). RF were caused by motorcycle crashes (16%, 57/347), motor vehicle crashes (12%, 411/3493), pedestrian-a

The burden of fatal and non-fatal injury in rural India.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the burden or causes of injury in rural villages in India. OBJECTIVE: To examine injury-related mortality and morbidity in villages in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. METHODS: A verbal-autopsy-based mortality surveillance study was used to collect mortality data on all ages from residents in 45 villages in 2003-2004. In early 2005, a morbidity survey in adults was carried out using stratified random sampling in 20 villages. Participants were asked about injuries sustained in the preceding 12 months. Both fatal and non-fatal injuries were coded using clas

Statewide assessment of injury and death rates among riders of off-road vehicles treated at trauma centers.

BACKGROUND: Injuries and deaths among riders of off-road motorized all-terrain vehicles are increasing in the US. We hypothesized that serious injuries in Oregon have increased among riders of both four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the Oregon Trauma Registry. Seriously injured patients treated in the state's designated urban and rural trauma centers were identified using E-codes (821.0 to 821.9), which indicate whether patients were riding either an off-road all-terrain four-wheel vehicle (ATV) or off-road two-wheeled motorcycle (ORMC). Second, we performed a supple

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia: epidemiology and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWHs) are uncommon, and it remains controversial whether such patients require urgent laparotomy. As such, this study was undertaken to assess the clinical sequelae of operative versus nonoperative management of TAWH, and whether certain patient or injury characteristics are predictive of the need for early surgery. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients presenting acutely with a TAWH at a Regional Trauma Center from January 2000 to December 2004. RESULTS: Thirty-four patients were identified (age 39 +/- 12 years; Injury Severity Score 31

Frontal sinus fractures: a treatment algorithm and assessment of outcomes based on 78 clinical cases.

BACKGROUND: The purposes of this article were to retrospectively review frontal sinus fractures at the authors' center, to assess the final outcomes, and to establish a treatment algorithm. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 78 consecutive frontal sinus fractures treated by the same surgeon between January 1, 1994, and January 1, 2002. RESULTS: In this study, 57.7 percent of fractures occurred as a result of motorcycle accidents and 75.6 percent of those patients were not wearing helmets at the time of injury. The use of helmets did not significantly affect the fracture p

Impact of snake bites and determinants of fatal outcomes in southeastern Nepal.

Current available data on snake bites in Nepal are based solely on hospital statistics. This community-based study aimed at evaluating the impact of snake bites and determining the risk factors associated with a fatal outcome in southeastern Nepal. A total of 1,817 households, selected by a random proportionate sampling method, were visited by trained field workers in five villages. Extensive data from snake bite victims during the 14 previous months were recorded and analyzed. One hundred forty-three snake bites including 75 bites with signs of envenoming were reported (annual incidence = 1,1

Snowmobile injuries and deaths in children: a review of national injury data and state legislation.

BACKGROUND: Snowmobiling is a popular family sport, with annual expenditures over $9 billion. The size and speed of snowmobiles make them potentially dangerous to children. Pediatric snowmobile-related trauma has not been studied in the United States. METHODS: We analyzed 291 pediatric snowmobile- related injuries and 75 deaths reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1990 to 1998. We reviewed snowmobile legislation in the states that reported at least 1 death to the Consumer Product Safety Commission during this time period. RESULTS: The most common sites of injury were the e

E-scooter riders sustain more head and internal injuries than motorcyclists and cyclists in England and Wales.

Electric scooters are increasingly used across the United Kingdom, yet national evidence on injury patterns, severity and exposure-adjusted risk remains limited. This study combined the National Major Trauma Registry for England and Wales (trauma admissions, 2020-2022) with operator-reported rental incident data from 18 cities (2020-2024), covering more than 33 million rides and 77.8 million kilometres. The two sources were analysed separately, not linked; across 38,440 records combined (15,247 registry trauma patients and 23,193 operator-reported incidents), e-scooter trauma showed a distinct

Early identification of high-risk older two-wheeler riders: A dual-sample approach for 30-day mortality prediction.

Older motorized two-wheeler riders face high risks of severe injuries and fatalities following motor vehicle crashes (MVCs), yet existing studies often rely on hospital-based data, potentially underestimating mortality risk. This study aims to identify predictors of 30-day mortality among older riders by leveraging both population-based and hospital-based samples. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Taiwan's Police-Reported Traffic Accident Registry (2019-2021), Taiwan Death Registry, and Taiwan National Health Insurance database (2016-2021). Two cohorts were established: a populat

Chasing Gold: Heat Acclimation in Elite Handcyclists with Spinal Cord Injury.

Thermoregulation is impaired in individuals with a spinal cord lesion (SCI), affecting sweat capacity, heat loss, and core temperature. This can be particularly problematic for athletes with SCI who exercise in hot and humid conditions, like those during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Heat acclimation can support optimal preparation for exercise in such challenging environments, but evidence is limited in endurance athletes with SCI. We evaluated whether seven consecutive days of exercise in the heat would result in heat acclimation. Five elite para-cycling athletes with SCI participated (tw

Trauma hazards in children: An update for the busy clinician.

Trauma and injury continue to be common in children and remain an important cause of mortality and morbidity. Legislation mandating the use of helmets for all cyclists appears to have been effective in reducing the incidence and severity of head and facial injuries, with no clear evidence of a reduction in cycling usage or activity. Straddle injuries, whilst uncommon and generally minor, require careful clinical assessment as they may be associated with urethral trauma. Quad bikes remain highly dangerous with continuing reports of deaths in child riders due to their inherent lack of stability:

Orthopaedic injuries among electric bicycle users.

INTRODUCTION: The use of electric bicycles (E-bike) has dramatically increased. E-bikes offer convenient, environmental-friendly, and less expensive alternative to other forms of transport. However, E-bikes provide a new public health challenge in terms of safety and injury prevention. This study is the first to specifically investigate the E-bike related orthopaedic injuries, based on a national trauma registry. METHODS: Data from a National Trauma Registry were reviewed for patients hospitalized following E-bike related injuries. Between Jan 2014 to Dec 2015, a total of 549 patients were re
