Kainic acid lesions of the superior olivary complex: a horseradish peroxidase study of surviving brain-stem projections.

Lesions of the superior olivary complex of the adult ferret were made by pressure injection of kainic acid (5 nM/microliters in Locke's solution) through a glass micropipette inserted into the lower brain-stem. Small injections of kainic acid (1.5 microliters) produced a localized loss of nerve cells in the superior olivary complex in the vicinity of the pipette tip without apparent damage to fibers of passage in the trapezoid body. The extent of neural damage was determined by the absence of cell bodies in Nissl-stained sections. Integrity of fibers in the trapezoid body and other decussating

Organization of cingulo-ponto-cerebellar connections in the cat.

This study deals with three different aspects of the organization of connections from the cingulate gyrus to the cerebellum. (1) With the use of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase as a retrograde tracer, the distribution of cingulate neurons projecting to the pontine nuclei was studied. Retrogradely labeled cells were found in layer 5 in all parts of the cingulate gyrus. Average densities of cingulo-pontine cells were similar in the different cytoarchitectonic subdivisions, although some density gradients were observed. The projection was found to be remarkably strong. Average densit

Effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on active cochlear micromechanical properties in human subjects: dependence on stimulus variables.

1. Outer hair cells (OHCs) have active micromechanical properties that are thought to be the origin of evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs). In the present study, click-evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded in humans with or without various contralateral acoustic stimulations. A previous study, concentrating on contralateral stimulation with broadband noise, had shown a decrease of the EOAE amplitude in humans. Results support a role for the efferent system in cochlear mechanics; indeed, medial efferent neurons of the olivocochlear bundle terminate on the OHCs. To obtain a better understa

Thalamic projections from a midbrain somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Ascending projections to the thalamus from a midbrain somatosensory area were investigated in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus. Connections were determined utilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) neurohistochemistry in which tetramethylbenzidine was the chromogen. Anterograde experiments, in which HRP injections were placed into the midbrain, revealed bilateral projections to the medialis complex of the dorsal thalamus. These observations were confirmed by HRP injections into the medialis complex which retrogradely labeled neurons in the midbrain somatosensory area bilaterally. An ipsilateral predo

Visual and auditory association areas of the cat's posterior ectosylvian gyrus: cortical afferents.

In a preceding report, we described patterns of thalamic retrograde labeling following 17 tracer deposits on the cat's posterior ectosylvian gyrus and concluded, on the basis of patterns of thalamic connectivity, that the posterior ectosylvian gyrus is composed of three major divisions: a tonotopic auditory zone located anteriorly, a belt of auditory association cortex occupying the gyral crown, and a visual belt located posteriorly. We describe here patterns of transcortical retrograde labeling obtained from tracer deposits in the three zones so defined. Our results indicate that the tonotopi

[Critical flicker fusion frequency in man during exposure to noise].

The critical frequency of flicker fusion in the central and four peripheral points of the retina was investigated in 12 test subjects during and after one hour exposure to wide-band noise of 95 dBA. The subjects showed two types of response: three displayed an increase and nine a decrease of the flicker fusion critical frequency as compared to the control level. The changes showed individual variations. No correlation was found between the sign of changes in the parameter and its pretest level or the retinal site of registration.

Persistent memory loss following section of the anterior fornix in humans. A historical review.

Searching the medical literature for persistent memory loss following section of the anterior fornix in humans, 13 reports were found and reviewed. They comprised 193 patients of whom 180 underwent fornicotomy for the treatment of epilepsy, and 13 underwent removal of third ventricle colloid cysts. Only 4 were reported to have persistent memory loss postoperatively and they were in the colloid cyst group. Within the limitations inherent to this type of analysis and to the problems of detection and quantification of memory deficits, the reviewed material supports the hypothesis that with anteri

[Memory disorders in lesions of the thalamus in man].

Isolated memory disorders occur after bilateral involvement of thalamus. Anterograde amnesia is not complete; retrograde amnesia is always severe. Four groups of thalamic nuclei may be affected: anterior nuclei; midline nuclei, medialis dorsalis nuclei; intralaminar nuclei. A pathophysiologic interpretation is proposed. Three kinds of memory processes may be involved: consolidating process that leads to the formation of memory traces (anterior nuclei, midline nuclei); retrieving process that leads to the activation of memory traces (intralaminar nuclei); temporal organizing process that regard

Catecholamine utilization in specific rat brain nuclei after short-term hyperprolactinaemia.

Endogenous hyperprolactinaemia was induced in intact male rats by transplantation of pituitaries under the kidney capsule. Five days later the utilization of noradrenaline (NA) and dopamine (DA) in individual brain nuclei and changes of plasma prolaction (PRL) were measured. Inhibition of catecholamine synthesis by alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (alpha-MPT) was used to measure utilization. Hyperprolactinaemia increased the utilization of NA in the locus coeruleus, the cell-body region of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNB), but decreased it in some terminal projections of the same pathway (e.g. the

Claustroneocortical projections studied in the cat by means of multiple retrograde fluorescent tracing.

The topographical interrelations of claustroneocortical cells and their degree of divergent collateralization were investigated in cat by means of retrograde fluorescent double labeling. The tracers Fast Blue (FB) and Nuclear Yellow (NY) were injected in several combinations in two different cortical fields. FB-labeled and NY-labeled cells were found in all cases in the insular portion of the ipsilateral claustrum (CII). The distributions of labeled cells confirmed the organization reported in previous studies. In some cases the two labeled cell populations were segregated in different parts o

Olivocerebellar connections in sheep studied with the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

We describe here the morphology of the inferior olive and the localization of labeled cells after HRP injections into various lobules of vermis and hemisphere of the cerebellum of the sheep. The medial part of the caudal half of the medial accessory olive projects to a medial zone in the anterior lobe, the simple lobule, and the lobules VII and VIII. The lateral part of the medial accessory olive projects to more lateral parts of these lobules with the exception of lobule VII. The group beta projects in a differential manner to the lateral parts of the lobules VII and VIII and the medial parts

Effects of anterior hypothalamic disconnection on the evolution of Goldblatt renal hypertension. A dual response.

The role of the central nervous system, in general, and of the hypothalamus, in particular, in the genesis of various forms of experimental hypertension has been the object of increased investigation. Lesions of the anteroventral area of the third ventricle (AV3V) in rats seem to block the development of various forms of hypertension. In the present experiments, AV3V was kept intact but its connections with the caudal neuroaxis were severed by means of a curved knife (2 mm radius), stereotaxically placed at the level of the arcuate nucleus. This disconnection, per se, induces polydipsia, and a

The anterior border zones of primary somatic sensory (S1) neocortex and their relation to cerebral convolutions, shown by micromapping of peripheral projections to the region of the fourth forepaw digit representation in raccoons.

In raccoons the somatic sensory neocortex is greatly expanded, with separate gyral crowns devoted to and intervening sulci separating, sensory representations of separate body parts, most strikingly those of the volar surfaces of individual forepaw digits. Most of the cortex in this region is buried in widely ramifying sulcal walls, wherein sensory projections have not been studied. We have determined mechanosensory projections to the fourth digit representation region including all neighboring sulcal walls, using tungsten microelectrodes for 3-dimensional micromapping. We found no significant

The reticulocerebellar projection to the pyramis copula pyramidis in the rat: an experimental study using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The organization of the lateral reticulocerebellar projection to the pyramis and copula pyramidis in the rat was studied with the use of microinjections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). These injections were made in different mediolateral positions along the width of this lobule. The objective was to determine whether reticulocerebellar parasagittal zones (Chan-Palay et al., '77) receive differential inputs from the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN). This material has previously been used to analyze the olivo and pontocerebellar projection to this same cortical region of the rat cerebellum (Eise

The distribution of commissural terminations in somatosensory areas I and II of the grey squirrel.

The topographic distribution of somesthetic interhemispheric projections was studied in grey squirrels using the Fink-Heimer technique following large aspiration lesions of the corpus callosum. On the day of perfusion, receptive fields were determined for microelectrode recording sites in the first, S I, and second, S II, somatosensory areas of cortex, and small electrolytic lesions were made in order to identify some of these sites in prepared brain sections. The cortex was then separated from the rest of the brain, flattened, and cut parallel, so that with the aid of the reference lesions, t

Development of histaminergic pathways in brain as influenced by maternal alcoholism.

The development of histaminergic pathways has been studied in the rat brain specially as influenced by maternal alcoholism. Maternal ethanol consumption during pregnancy results in an increase in the cerebral histamine levels of the fetus. An increase in the brain histamine levels is also observed in the newborn rats suckling on the ethanol-fed mothers compared to the corresponding controls. Brain histamine levels are highest towards latter part of the pregnancy and lowest in the adult brains, whereas the brain histidine decarboxylase activity is lowest in the fetal brains and highest in the a
