PURPOSE: To prospectively monitor progressive changes of retinal ganglion cell function in early glaucoma using the pattern electroretinogram (PERG).
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients enrolled as glaucoma suspects were observed untreated over an average of 5.7±1.4 years, during which they were tested with PERG (PERGLA paradigm) and standard automated perimetry (SAP) 2 times per year. PERG amplitude and phase were normalized for physiological age-related changes, and linear regressions fitted to the data to calculate progression slopes (signal), slope SE (noise), and corresponding signal-to-noise r

Accumulating evidence suggests that basic visual information processing is impaired in schizophrenia. However, deficits in peripheral vision remain largely unexplored. Here we hypothesized that sensory processing of information in the visual periphery would be impaired in schizophrenia patients and, as a result, crowding - the breakdown in target recognition that occurs in cluttered visual environments - would be stronger. Therefore, we assessed visual crowding in the peripheral vision of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. Subjects were asked to identify a target letter that was surr

Event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown that sensitivity to individual faces emerges as early as approximately 160ms in the human occipitotemporal cortex (N170). Here we tested whether this effect generalizes across changes in viewpoint. We recorded ERPs during an unfamiliar individual face adaptation paradigm. Participants were presented first with an adapting face ( approximately 3000ms) rotated 30 degrees in depth, followed by a second face (200ms) in a frontal view of either the same or a different identity. The N170 amplitude at right occipitotemporal sites to the second stimulus

A noninvasive assessment of neurovascular coupling would be of great importance. For this reason, we simultaneously studied graded responses of visually evoked cerebral blood flow (CBF) velocity responses (VEFR) and visual-evoked potentials (VEP) to visual contrasts. The records were made from 30 healthy volunteers aged 38.0 +/- 9.6 years. The stimulus was a black-and-white checkerboard with visual contrasts (VC) of 1%, 10%, and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler, and the VEP were recoded from the scalp from occipital leads. To test the rel

EEG/VEP and fMRI responses to periodic visual stimulation are reported. The purpose of these experiments was to look for similar patterns in the time series produced by each method to help understand the relationship between the two. The stimulation protocol was the same for both sets of experiments and consisted of five complete cycles of checkerboard pattern reversal at 1.87 Hz for 30 s followed by 30 s of a stationary checkerboard. The fMRI data was analyzed using standard methods, while the EEG was analyzed with a new measurement of activation-the VEPEG. Both VEPEG and fMRI time series con

Despite recent advances in computer vision and optical imaging, the image-based recognition of ophthalmic lens categories characterized by different refractive indices and anti-reflective coating types remains largely unexplored. In this work, we formulate this problem as a non-destructive optical inspection task, where lens-induced visual changes are treated as subtle micro-texture signatures produced by the interaction between the lens and a controlled visual target. Although these signatures are often imperceptible to the human eye, they can be quantified using local texture analysis. To es

In everyday life, aesthetic liking largely depends on the fluency of stimulus-driven, default, rapid, and automatic processing. However, our understanding of how perceptual and conceptual fluency jointly shape aesthetic liking in automatic processing remains limited. In two experiments, the masked priming paradigm was employed to manipulate perceptual and conceptual fluency of target stimuli separately, and participants were instructed to rate liking for colored images of everyday objects based on their initial impressions. The results indicated that the masked matched contours and words signi

Fluent (i.e., rapid and efficient) processing of perceptual objects is vital for humans to successfully navigate their environments. The experience of fluent processing per se tends to trigger positive affect; however, this affect is often misattributed by perceivers to the objects themselves, meaning that easy-to-perceive objects are judged more positively. These fluency-based preference effects have been robustly demonstrated unimodally, and specifically in situations in which fluency and preference are manipulated and measured for the same objects. However, little is known about how this ef

Foveal crowding refers to the impaired recognition of a foveal stimulus due to the presence of adjacent flankers. Previous research has produced inconsistent results regarding the maturation of foveal crowding, either at ages 5-7 or remaining elevated from ages 5 to at least 11. We investigated this developmental trajectory using a specialized set of digit stimuli (Pelli fonts) tailored for measuring foveal crowding. We measured foveal crowding in preschoolers, school-age typically developing children, and school-age children with developmental dyslexia, as well as in a group of adults. The re

Employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of neural responses during sign language, picture, and word processing tasks in a cohort of 35 deaf participants and contrasted these responses with those of 35 hearing counterparts. Our voxel-based analysis unveiled distinct patterns of brain activation during language processing tasks. Deaf individuals exhibited robust bilateral activation in the superior temporal regions during sign language processing, signifying the profound neural adaptations associated with sign comprehension. Does the human brain represent perspectival shapes, i.e., viewpoint-dependent object shapes, especially in relatively higher-level visual areas such as the lateral occipital cortex? What is the temporal profile of the appearance and disappearance of neural representations of perspectival shapes? And how does attention influence these neural representations? To answer these questions, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and multivariate decoding techniques to investigate spatiotemporal neural representations of perspectival shapes. Participant

Chunk decomposition, which requires the mental representation transformation in accordance with behavioral goals, is of vital importance to problem solving and creative thinking. Previous studies have identified that the frontal, parietal, and occipital cortex in the cognitive control network selectively activated in response to chunk tightness, however, functional localization strategy may overlook the interaction brain regions. Based on the notion of a global brain network, we proposed that multiple specialized regions have to be interconnected to maintain goal representation during the cour

Does the nature of representation in the category-selective regions in the occipitotemporal cortex reflect visual or conceptual properties? Previous research showed that natural variability in visual features across categories, quantified by image gist statistics, is highly correlated with the different neural responses observed in the occipitotemporal cortex. Using fMRI, we examined whether category selectivity for animals and tools would remain, when image gist statistics were comparable across categories. Critically, we investigated how category, shape, and spatial frequency may contribute

Past models of frontal asymmetry have associated greater relative right frontal cortical activity with greater withdrawal motivation and greater relative left frontal cortical activity with greater approach motivation. However, this traditional model of frontal asymmetry leaves little to no room for the control processes that engage and regulate these emotional and motivational systems. A growing body of literature suggests that greater relative right frontal activation may be associated with greater regulatory control (Gable et al. 2018). However, this work confounded regulatory control and m

Lexical competence includes both the ability to relate words to the external world as accessed through (mainly) visual perception (referential competence) and the ability to relate words to other words (inferential competence). We investigated the role of visual imagery in lexical inferential competence by using an auditory version of an inferential naming-to-definition task, in which visual imageability of both definitions and target words was manipulated. A visual imageability-related brain activity (bilateral posterior-parietal lobe and ventrotemporal cortex, including fusiform gyrus) was f

Spatial attention improves performance on visual tasks, increases neural responses to attended stimuli, and reduces correlated noise in visual cortical neurons. In addition to being visually responsive, many retinotopic visual cortical areas exhibit very slow (<0.1 Hz) endogenous fluctuations in functional magnetic resonance imaging signals. To test whether these fluctuations degrade stimulus representations, thereby impairing visual detection, we recorded functional magnetic resonance imaging responses while human participants performed a target detection task that required them to allocate s

Neuroimaging-based investigations of change blindness, a phenomenon in which seemingly obvious changes in visual scenes fail to be detected, have significantly advanced our understanding of visual awareness. The vast majority of prior investigations, however, utilize paradigms involving visual disruptions (e.g., intervening blank screens, saccadic movements, "mudsplashes"), making it difficult to isolate neural responses toward visual changes cleanly. To address this issue in this present study, high-density EEG data (256 channel) were collected from 25 participants using a paradigm in which v

Elementary arithmetic requires a complex interplay between several brain regions. The classical view, arising from fMRI, is that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the superior parietal lobe (SPL) are the main hubs for arithmetic calculations. However, recent studies using intracranial electroencephalography have discovered a specific site, within the posterior inferior temporal cortex (pITG), that activates during visual perception of numerals, with widespread adjacent responses when numerals are used in calculation. Here, we reexamined the contribution of the IPS, SPL, and pITG to arithmetic

Understanding other people's actions and mental states includes the interpretation of body postures and movements. In particular, hand postures are an important channel to signal both action and communicative intentions. Recognizing hand postures is computationally challenging because hand postures often differ only in the subtle configuration of relative finger positions and because visual characteristics of hand postures change across viewpoints. To allow for accurate interpretation, the brain needs to represent hand postures in a view-invariant but posture-specific manner. Here we test for
