Malassezia species are associated with pityriasis versicolor (PV) and its depigmented variant pityriasis versicolor alba (PVa), widespread fungal skin infections in humans. The pathogenesis of PV and PVa remains unclear, including their clinical and histological symptoms such as hyper- and depigmentation, reduced responsiveness to ultraviolet radiation and lack of inflammatory reaction despite high fungal load. Pigments produced by M. furfur are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of PV. In vitro, M. furfur produces a wide range of pigments and fluorochromes when cultured with tryptophan as …

This article describes common cutaneous mycoses in children: mucocutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis, tinea pedis, onychomycosis and tinea capitis. Topical therapy is effective in tinea corporis and pedis, pityriasis versicolor and cutaneous candidiasis. It is ineffective in tinea capitis, in immunocompromised children and onychomycosis. Griseofulvin has been the main treatment until now in children, but it is only fungistatic, may cause interactions and has to be given for long periods. Ketoconazole has not been widely accepted for use in children because of hepatotox…

Croconazole hydrochloride (1%) cream is a new antifungal agent for the treatment of dermatomycoses. In vitro, croconazole has a broad spectrum of activity against dermatophytes, moulds, yeasts, dimorphic fungi and some skin-relevant bacteria. Therapeutic results obtained in 277 patients (mean age 43.0 +/- 14.8 years; 158 male and 119 female) who had mycoses at various locations and were treated with 1% croconazole cream are reported. The types of fungal infection in these patients were: pityriasis versicolor (94), candidiasis (43) and trichophytosis (140). One topical application per day was a…

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis is a rare genodermatosis associated with mutations in the EVER1/TMC6 and EVER2/TMC8 genes. The inheritance is considered to be autosomal recessive, but reports suggesting an autosomal dominant inheritance indicate disease genetic heterogeneity. Its onset occurs in early childhood and presents as a combination of pityriasis versicolor-like, flat wart-like and seborrheic keratosis-like lesions, with a potential for malignant transformation, mainly squamous cell carcinoma.

A great variety of cutaneous disorders can be seen as reactions to toxic substances. To limit the extent of this review, cutaneous manifestations known to have an immunological mechanism are simply listed with pertinent references. The report has been focused to cover the cutaneous manifestations of toxic agents of non-immunological and unknown mechanisms. Entities discussed include acne, alopecia, dermatitis caused by spider bites, pityriasis rosea, and chemically-induced scleroderma.

The papulosquamous diseases have certain common morphologic appearances which may at times lead to confusion in diagnosis. They do not have any common etiologic factor. The most common diseases in this category are psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, lichen planus, pityriasis rosea, and secondary syphilis. Exfoliative erythroderma is included here since it rarely may be a complication of a pre-existing papulosquamous disease such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: Plaque psoriasis is relatively straightforward to identify. When diagnostic concerns arise in atypical cases, a biopsy is needed … res of 20 cases of atypical plaque psoriasis and 40 cases of psoriasis mimics as controls including pityriasis rosea (n = 10), pityriasis lichenoides chronica (n = 8), and subacute dermatitis (n = 22).
RESULTS: A retrospective analysis of the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with atypical plaque psoriasis and controls was performed. Pathologi …

Hyperkeratotic skin adverse events are a group of toxic effects, characterized by the disruption of epidermal homeostasis and interaction with keratinocyte proliferation/differentiation or keratinocyte survival, and frequently reported with systemic anticancer treatments. These types of reactions include hand-foot skin reaction or palmoplantar keratoderma, induced psoriasis, keratosis pilaris-like or pityriasis rubra pilaris-like rashes, Grover's disease, and contact hyperkeratosis. Cutaneous squamoproliferative lesions are also described because of the presence of abnormal keratinocyte prolif…

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis, also known as Lewandowsky-Lutz syndrome or tree man disease is a rare genetic skin disorder. It is characte … ion of this disorder. The most frequently observed skin lesion is a macular rash similar to that of pityriasis versicolor associated with verrucous scaly papules. The risk of malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma is high. Several treatments have been tried (retinoids, interferon, cimetidine) with little or non-repeatable success. Sun protection …
