Prediction of prognosis in patients with cerebral contusions based on machine learning.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global issue and a major cause of patient mortality, and cerebral contusions (CCs) is a common primary TBI. The haemorrhagic progression of a contusion (HPC) poses a significant risk to patients' lives, and effectively predicting changes in haematoma volume is an urgent clinical challenge that needs to be addressed. As a branch of artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML) can proficiently handle a wide range of complex data and identify connections between data for tasks such as prediction and decision making. We collected data from 673 CCs patients who w

Preoperative predictors of type 2 diabetes remission after bilio-pancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.

BACKGROUND: Many patients achieve short-term type 2 diabetes (T2D) remission after bariatric surgery, but relapses are common. Diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery vary across procedures and populations. T2D remission scores are simple clinical tools developed to predict remission after bariatric surgery. However, they have never been tested after Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the predictive value of T2D remission scores and preoperative diabetes characteristics in predicting T2D remission after BPD-DS. SETTING:

Water quality forecasting with transient-aware modeling for non-stationary environmental time series.

Water quality is jointly shaped by environmental and anthropogenic factors, and the resulting monitoring data often exhibit non-stationary characteristics with transient and abrupt signals. Conventional forecasting models have difficulty accommodating these distributional shifts: they often produce delayed predictions or lose accuracy near abrupt-change points. This study proposes a state-space forecasting framework for complex aquatic dynamics, in which parallel temporal and spectral branches learn complementary time-domain and frequency-domain representations. The spectral-attention Mamba ar

Leveraging traditional and advanced machine learning for comprehensive oncology data integration and outcome prediction.

BACKGROUND: Outcome prediction in neuro-oncology remains challenging due to heterogeneity in tumor biology, imaging characteristics, treatment response, and patient-specific clinical factors. Although molecular databases have advanced understanding of brain tumor biology, many datasets lack broader data necessary for generalizable predictive modeling. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being explored to integrate these heterogeneous data sources and support precision neuro-oncology. METHODS: A narrative review was performed using PubMed and Embase to ident

The next frontier: AI, multi-omics, and predictive models for weight gain in HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: People with HIV (PWH) are increasingly susceptible to excess weight gain and obesity after initiation of antiretroviral therapy. However, there is substantial variation in individual weight gain that is difficult to predict with clinical factors alone. We review emerging methods in machine learning and multi-omics that address the biology and prediction of weight gain and weight-associated conditions, persistent challenges, and future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: PWH continue to have increasing burden of excess weight gain and obesity. Obesity has a complex pathophysiology

Modeling and application of alzheimer's disease complex trait prediction based on multi-task learning.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complex disorder influenced by genetic factors, and related phenotypes often share common genetic mechanisms. However, traditional genetic risk prediction models typically focus on a single phenotype, neglecting valuable cross-phenotype information. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of multi-task learning (MTL) in modeling genetic data for AD and to assess whether aggregating genetic signals at the gene level can further improve prediction accuracy. We applied two representative MTL models, including the Sluice Network and the Learning to Branch (LTB) m

How Can Clinicians Decide if AI-Enabled Risk Prediction Models Are Fit for Purpose for Real World Use?

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled risk prediction models are being increasingly used in hospital practice to predict patient risk of adverse events, aimed at giving early warning of impending events and facilitating preventive intervention. However, evidence of beneficial impact varies which may be due to clinicians not finding them useful because of suboptimal predictive accuracy (effectiveness), burden of false alerts (efficiency) or narrow prediction windows (utility). Current model performance measures do not capture the interdependency of these three dimensions. In this commentary, usi

Towards the Definition of a Prognostic Model for Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has a heterogeneous clinical course, making robust, usable prognostic tools essential for risk-adapted care. In this paper, we worked at the definition of an effective and deployable prognostic model, tailored to a specific MCL population. Our work has taken advantage of AutoML-Med, a framework supporting end-users in the data analysis pipeline. Our experiments have provided promising results, leading to an explainable model that outperformed traditional prognostic indexes, paving the way for future investigations.
